I am completely disgusted by the way the Spartan IVs are portrayed in Spartan Ops, specifically DeMarco and Palmer. I’ve seen more professionalism from mall security. I will never believe that ONI calls that group of beer-bonging skirt chasers “Spartans”. Please replace them with soldiers. The current characters are unbelievable at best. Their dialog would be better suited for a Uwe Boll movie or Saturday morning cartoon.
I agree on those two and their attitude, the others are acceptable however. The IV’s are former ODST’s etc, so when you look at ODST’s personalities (Bucks squad an others) it makes sense. They weren’t trained from the age of 5 or 6 afterall, so they’re more “human-like” in their personalities.
But the two you mentioned, I agree with you on.
Have any of you actually been in a military unit? I have, in fact, I am in the US Army, and you do run into “Skirt chasers” like that, not very often, but you do.
A little cockiness is appropriate. Pilots and special operators are all a tad over-confident. So when the SIVs act like a bunch of jocks, it’s actually pretty similar to how SEALs and Green Berets are.
Palmer is way to arrogant for her own good, but the rest of the new kids aren’t so bad. An O-4 should be more professional, even more so when you consider that she more of a field officer than a mid-rank ship maintenance officer. Her actions just aren’t acceptable, super-soldier or not.
You guys all make really good points but I expect ONI would only take the best from each branch of the service. I would hope that the best of the Army for example (where Thorne came from) would know better than to touch an unknown alien artifact, aw heck or even stay in a room when a ordered to. The only Spartan IVs who managed to not be insubordinate was the Irish chick (not enough dialog even if they tried) and the nameless fodder from the campaign.
My point is that there must be a better balance between being more human and being a supersoldier.
Well if it’s any consolation, the only Spartan Palmer action DeMarco got later that night was the one he gave himself, so hopefully that bruises his ego a bit.
Terrible pun aside, I have to agree with the general consensus thus far that the S-IVs haven’t exactly won me over. So much potential, but they sure don’t think. “Hey Madsen, let’s gossip about that old women behind the Spartan-IIs within earshot!” “Yeah DeMarco, nobody will hear us.”
I guess I just expect more from Spartans.
I want the Spartan-IVs to be more like Thorne, he was done right
> I want the Spartan-IVs to be more like Thorne, he was done right
Yeah, I enjoyed Thorne, he was the character that balanced the group out, made it feel like he’s smart, and knows what’s going on, but at the same time knows not to go stepping out of line.
Perhaps they’re sitting on their high and mighty horse being newly recruited Spartans and over the years will “mature” into Spartan-hood? So maybe in 5/6 they’ll be better?
And this exact topic is discussed in Spartan Ops when Halsey says she hardly considers any of them true Spartans. They’re just regular soldiers mentally, given superhuman abilities. Forgive them for being human, but regular military guys like them given what they have are going to have an ego; regular military guys like them act like them all the time, it sort of comes with the military life. Maybe not a Commander like Palmer, but a grunt like DeMarco for sure.

Exactly, funny how a Spartan-IV recruit pretty much sets an example for the Spartan-IVs we know, the best thing I’ve seen the Spartan-IVs compared to are Space Jocks

It’s probably because Thorne knows what it is like to have loved ones die. It gives him more of a sense of duty.

Well one thing alot of people have to understand is that not a single Spartan is normal. None of them are the only Spartans closet to humans would be the children of the Orion Project everyone else wouldn’t act how Demarco did.Hell i don’t even want to think of someone with that name acting like that. Hearing that name is already bad enough for me now i have to see it taken down by some fool. I can say this for sure. The Spartan IV’s are the best and elite from all branches they are barley in the mind of a human. These men and women are black ops, commandos, black water, and those who were good enough to be in those groups but choice not to join or just didn’t have all the qualifications.
I have been raised in a military family and i know how real troops act and i can say for sure that most military troops that i have seen are heavy drinks and strong moraled people. Like said above there area few that are skirt chases but those at times are no more than a few grunts here and there. Most military personal i have seen just want to have their own little family and to be left alone. Those are the hardened vets from what i know because most of the vets i know served with the units i listed above. My father was a seal and was with Black Water for awhile and i have meet his friends and their children. If those troops were to see their kids acting like Paul or making stupid decisions like Palmer.
I can’t say for sure what they would do but they will know how to act from that point on.
Also to the person who replied they are ODSTs like Bucks squad, i can say that what i have seen of the Spartan IV personality no they are not. Bucks squad only had one screw up and that is when Mickey accidentally flew into the Rookies pod and that can be seen as a freak accident. After being scattered and spread thin buck got his boys and his CO out of the city safe while an Covenant fleet glassed their location…oh did i mention they gave the UNSC the war winning asset. Only Romeo was the only one who was thinking about how many chicks he could of been with at the moment but like his profile said, he keeps that off the battlefield. He has an off switch for it.
Even after Throne nearly was killed and in hostile territory Majestic still managed to joke around and that is going to be the death of their squad. There wasn’t a single time in ODST where the troopers seemed to think anything was funny. They were happy to be alive and to bring the Covenant just a little bit more pain in the -Yoink-.
I’m not just saying this because i am livid to Spartan IV’s but the only people of Majestic i see coming out of New Mombasa alive would of been Grant and Throne. Not only is she the only one who trusts Thrones ideas but i’m sure that Grant would be the one to do the Smart thing and attempt an EVAC.
Throne is very resourceful and is basically the J.D. with a voice and Spartan Armor, no doubt he would of been getting out.
Putting Demarco in Bucks place, I doubt he can kill to hunters.
Madsen is good with a sniper rifle (i’m assuming) but so are jackals and if he was in a sniper battle with one up in the roof tops i think he wouldn’t be able to fight off a Chieftian with his bodyguards two jackal snipers, a turret suppressing him and a squad of grunts on the assault. (this happens on that mission, crazy to think they got out of that city okay)
Than Hoya…his rage would get the best of him just like it did before.

yeah but Spartans are suppose to be the elite of the elite.

Elite of the elite or not, they’re human beings, and Spec ops units are more laxed, and are more likely to have “rowdy” soldiers, their job is more stressful, so they’re more relaxed than you think. The only reason why the spartan 2’s aren’t as laxed because of how they was raised. where as Spartan 4’s wasn’t raised like spartan 2’s, they was normal people, normal soldiers, expecting them to tighten up, and act like they got sticks up their butts, and a very flat personality is wrong.

Thorne definitely had something going for him, though the AWOL thing definitely put me off a bit. Actually, I think Grant might be my favorite SPARTAN-IV (except for mine, of course~). DeMarco and Madsen… yeah, sure, every military branch has womanizers and incompetant squad leaders.
But Palmer is unacceptable. She is essentially Duke Nukem with a -Yoink!-, and I don’t mean that as a compliment. She’s arrogant, overpowered, and flat-out annoying. I would rather have Deadpool in charge of the S-IVs then Sarah “EGGHEADS” Palmer.
The S-IVs didn’t seem that bad to me. Were they the stoic Spartans that we’re used to? Heck no. But that’s the point. It shows how different they are. And it’s completely natural for military personnel to act like goofballs while off duty. Even the Spartan IIs and IIIs make the occasional joke and sarcastic comment during battle.

Of course, even regular soldiers would likely know subtlety.
Maybe if they knew how to melee in gameplay, they’d be a bit better. The Spartan AI are more suckish than in Reach.

Spartans and subtlety don’t often mix.
