No more Jackals?

Following Halo 5, Jul’Mdama’s covenant group was destroyed, leaving the Banish to likely fill in as the enemy covenant group you face in Halo Infinite. However, afaik the Banish doesn’t allow any Jackals within their ranks. Do you think Infinite could be the first game not to feature Jackals?

Jackals are mercenaries. The Banish could pay for a matron shipmaster to help attack certain areas. Cortana and the Created could just subjugate them like the Unggoy. There are lots of way to keep all enemy characters arch types in halo and those are just two examples.

Jackels could even have their own mini faction or multiple factions fighting amongst themselves and others.

I think a cool thing you could do in a mission is when you meet a group of jackels and they see you its an immediate fight but when you find a hidden route and assassinate the jackels leader with alerting the others prior you get the option to “pay” where the player character offers money for assistance and they help you through the mission

Jackals were mainly Pirates and Mercs ; often times even fighting among themselves as often as not ; before joining the Covenant , so plenty of opportunity to confront them even if not associated with the “Big Bad” of the next game.

Wouldn’t hiring mercenary Kig Yar go against Cortana’s idea for galactic peace?

I am not saying Cortana would hire them. I am saying they often worked for themselves before the Covenant , as warriors ,raiders and pirates , so fighting them in the next game is still possible even if not attached to Cortana , or The Banished , in any way.

They meant more like they might submit to her power. Like when the covenant showed up

Seeing the power that Cortana possesses and how she’s giving every specie an opportunity to join her, it’s likely we could even see human enemies. Jackals? I’d say definitely, as much as I hate them. But I would be fine with a Halo game with no Jackals. AT ALL.

Wheeew, been many years since I posted on Bungie forums back in the days… and here.

Well. I hope Jackals will make a return, on our side aswell. They are natural mercs, killers, scavengers and can sniff out valuable items, well not as good as the newly introduced race Yonhets in artifact hunting myabe.
I hope all three sub species of Kig-Yar return.

  • Ibie’shan[1] - Ruuhtian[1] - T’vaoan[Maybe they could play on both sides, setting up camps around Installation 07. I dont think they will willingly accept Cortanas super deal and getting everything they want and such… I mean, the thrill of the hunt will be gone… like with the Jiralhanae/ Brutes. Utter boredom of having everything and getting what you WANT everyday can go into a pitfall of conflicts, ironically. The hunt for the need and thrill is what drives, even us humans.
Glad I found out the Tvaoan arent extinct as many though after playing Halo Reach back in the day.

Also it blows my mind there werent any Kig Yar leader in Halo Wars 2… just wtf? A rogue Jackal prince or something. The grunts got one. Sidetrack I know.

Long live the Kig - Yar!

That would be a huge mistake, the Jackals are a staple to Halo’s enemy encounter design.

Jackals are annoying, with their dumb shields and beam rifles. I wouldn’t miss them.

They are but I like the challenge, as with all annoying enemies. As long as you can “git gud” and there are counters, different enemies should NOT be removed just because its an annoyance and you cant adapt. I know… the Jackals from Halo 2, will wreck you HARD. But I like it for what it is, its like hardcore mode, force you to adapt ( yeah, countering by be very good or skip by level glitching).
I wouldnt mind having the insane Halo 2 jackals back in town in Halo Infinite ;p BUT there should be a fair deal to get through the level without glitching.

The shields are, well there for a purpose for the Jackals role as a front line blocker. I hope we get different roles for different jackals/ Kig - Yar again.

Remember the Skirmishers? I found them challenging and fun to fight. Hard to hit but they didnt take much dmg once they got shot.
Also remember when Jackals dropping plasma grenades in Halo 2? I would love to see them use nades, maybe have some with shields of a different type and throw nades, while others shoot as ususal.

I hope they keep Jackals in some how. They’re a good enemy type with the snipers and shields.

Jackals are going to be the only enemy in the game, and they are all jackal snipers.

If Jackals come back bring back Skirmishers and their cool shield gauntlets.

Fun fact:
Firstly; Jackals aren’t united and even during the human covenant war and will fight pretty much anyone if paid or given trade opportunities due to how divided and wide spread all the Jackal clans are. So you could have Jackals fighting the covenant and helping humans whilst having other Jackals still in the covenant trying to kill humans.
Secondly; due to the low rate of males being born and reaching adulthood nearly all jackal clans are lead by females in their matriarchal society. So seeing a jackal prince would be extremely rare it wouldn’t be hard to find a jackal Shipmistress.
My sources

I hope to see the Banished AND Covenant forces under “Cortana” fighting for the same or similar goals. In that case I would love to see a Jackal faction joining the Prometheans - Knights and co., Elites, Jackals, Skirmisher, Grunts, Drones and maybe Hunters - while Banished groups would get H3 style Brutes together with Elites, Hunter, Grunts, Engineers and Skitters as a newcomer. So even if Floods won’t come back (hope they do) we at least get would get battles among multiple factions which always was a strong-suit in Halo. Of course that also means the AI has to get close to Bungie levels once more.

As a side not Skirmisher coming back wouldn’t make much sense lore wise, but in terms of gameplay variety I actually enjoyed them a lot in Reach and missed them since. H5G tried to mimic their behavior by letting Jackals jump onto high ledges as well, but they still lacked the speed and aggressive nature of the original. Than again, having a human faction joining with the machines would make a lot of sense too, but I doubt we will ever have human enemies in Halo. Neither do I think it would add much on a gameplay level, quite the opposite. Skirmisher on the other hand have the opposite problem imho, lore wise it doesn’t make sense, but they would add an interesting enemy role.

Jackals are a critical part of Halo’s gameplay. The Jackals are very defensive and rely on precision to take out targets. 343 is probably going to find some way to bring them into the game because I just can’t see them not being present. I do however hope that we fight the banished instead of the covenant. The covenant should have died a long time ago and while I know Mdama’s covenant was just a splinter group, It’s time for the covenant to be put down for good like intended in Halo 3.

I think they did back in 2015. In the missions Guardians Cortana directly speaks to every specie to join her. Refusal would only result in extinction followed by their reconstruction in her vision. Seeing her power, it’s likely some Jackals and even humans would join her out of fear.

They will still be in game…wouldn’t be halo without them jackal snipers
