Halo 3, maybe the franchise’s greatest game, turned 15 years old today, and what did 343 do to celebrate it on two of its active games? Nothing.
Not an H3 version of Chief’s helmet to unlock, not a H3 themed menu background, not even a pop up message. They truly do not care about the history of the franchise or the players who have loved the games since CE came out. I popped into Infinity tonight for the first time in over a month, hoping for anything to entice me into reengaging, but I guess I’ll just have to keep playing MCC, the last vestige of a once great empire.
Richie Heinz (former Halo pro, currently works for 343) organized the Throwback Throwdown that happened at HCS Orlando earlier today.
Triggers Down vs Instinct. It was a throwback match on the main stage to celebrate Halo 3’s 15th anniversary and doubled as the world premiere of The Pit (on Halo Infinite).

I was disappointed with a so called “World premier”, although I’m looking forward to playing the Pit in Infinite, it would of been awesome to of had a trailer for example with gameplay on various remade maps, an announcement of a Halo 3 map pack would of hit the spot, rather than just 1 map.
Next time there is a world premier, I’ll leave the popcorn in the cupboard lol
Compared to Halo CE’s 10th, where we got a fully remastered campaign, 6 developer crafted maps, and a Firefight map, and Reach’s massive Title Update, that gave us the Anniversary magnum, melee bleed through, and both 80% and Zero Bloom.
Compared to Halo 2’s 10th, where we got (despite being broken at the time) a fully remastered campaign, a brand new MP engine with 6 maps, and a compilation release of the entire mainline franchise up to that point on modern consoles, including online multiplayer for CE and classic Halo 2.
Halo 3’s 10th saw literally nothing. And it’s 15th gets ONE forged map. And not even the release of that map, but just a blip on the roadmap.
I found the rematch to be pretty awesome. Still though, playing a forge map during HCS, clearly it’s about competitive Halo and not the social aspect of the game anymore especially if that’s the only recognition for the 15th anniversary.
I mean the anniversary of h3 happened to be on a HCS weekend, it was planned for sure because it just makes sense. The alternative would have been 343 to announce via twitter or youtube but they already had an event going - so why not? They could have made sure to not plan HCS on same weekend at the beginning of the year when events were planned and either done nothing at all or could have had a dedicated video with some content (not sure exactly what people want from the anniversary).
What if to celebrate Halo 3 they give everyone a Halo 3 Master Chief Armor Kit that goes with any and all Armor Cores and bring back 4-player splitscreen. They could also make Arbiter, N’tho Sraom, and Uzse 'Taham Armor Kits/Cores unlockable too. New epic Halo 3 event.
It’s a celebration only for those who care about esports/competitive play. For everyone else, it’s meaningless and goes against what Halo’s supposed to be - a party shooter.
Right so they could have not scheduled HCS on the same weekend and did some random stream of some random 343 people playing halo 3 campaign or even just playing the new forge map on Sunday?
Oh boyyy that sure sounds exciting.
There’s absolutely nothing 343 could have done that would have been exciting for the community short of releasing h3 remastered (would have had complaints from the anti h3 crowd) or dropping multiple h3 community playlists into matchmaking (which would then have massive complaints about anything missing).
The pit forge map announcement I guess?
Not great really.
Id have dug it more if the lighting and colour scheme were more like the og.
If they had managed to import the training fire range assets from the og and h4 for forge that also would have been sort of killer.
But ya not much of an anniversary.
I wasnt expecting an Anniversary update for H3MCC for net gen and pc but man that would have ruled.
Id have been happy if most assets were ripped from H2A.
Id have paid for an overhaul like that easy.
Prob paid 60 bucks if it had ODST with rain in engine.
Bit lackluster but wasnt expecting much to begin with.
Surprised the map wasnt sandtrap or valhalla with btb so barren.
Or guardian due to it being so well loved and pit being remixed for halo 4 And breakout already.
Honestly - for me personally - yes, that would have been more entertaining to watch. Because there’s more going on there than just a competitive sweat fest for people I don’t know. And at this point I need confirmation that 343i understands the community of halo is much larger than just the competitive players. Them doing this tournament thing for Halo 3’s 15th ANNIVERSARY and that be it is just not rebuilding my faith in them.
Why would they have remastered Halo 3? Infinite’s bleeding players as it is, them doing a remaster of Halo 3 would just cause the remaining players to leave their newly released game.
How exactly?
How would having an anniversary graphic toggle DLC for the MCC take players away from infinite?
The topic of this thread is celebrating halo 3’s 15th anniversary.
They celebrated CE and 2s 10th with An anniversary edition.
Further each of those had an mp component in the latest release for the franchise on their releases.
So logically if they did have an Anniversary DLC announcement it would include a halo 3 based mp update for infinite.
So im very confused as to what your logic is here tbh.
Whatever floats your boat. Watching 343 employees play is usually cringe at best, it’s like watching IGN people play games and you wonder if they have ever played that genre ever before, literal pain.
And for them doing this quick h3 throwback during the HCS - the could have literally just done nothing. That was probably the plan at the beginning of the year (to have nothing for h3 anniversary, because again, higher ups don’t care and never will, it’s MS). We have infinite now, the ship has sailed for h3 remastered. Knowing remakes were wanted in infinite, it’s an easy W to make a map like the pit, throw it in the event given the competitive community actually likes the pit and get a group together to play it when half of them were already there for HCS.
The higher ups are still going to want that esports appeal, not sure what to do about that. It is pretty sad watching infinite during HCS pull in just 40k viewers roughly at most while game like val are over 100k with no events.
Once again some of you were expecting far too much from what 343 has shown they can and will do.
3 maps dropped during hcs for worldwide play would have quelled everyone’s frustrations I feel and lived up to the title of world premier. It would have been like the good ol map pack days
