I apologise if this is long…
We’ve had a countdown happening in my house. One that involved the release of Halo 5. My husband was going to get off work early on October 27, and my two boys 11, and 13, were beyond excited. Why?.. Because we had planned a halo family day. As we do. We love playing together.
I’ve already bought the digital deluxe package, and started downloading to make sure we could actually play it that day ($113 dollars). I’m on restricted internet and only get 80g’s a month, and this game takes 60g’s, so we agreed as a family to cut our internet usage. I ordered two new Halo remotes (one as a birthday present) at 70+ bucks a pop. And then, I made a stupid promise to my son that because his birthday is the day before Halo 5 comes out, as a present he could stay home from school and we would play co-op together.
Ya… thanks 343 industries.
Is this all my own fault for not researching better? Absolutely. I will know better not to have faith in 343 industries moving forward.
I hope they’re proud of their 60FPS, and that it was worth ruining the traditions Halo was famous for.
We don’t have tons of money to blow on Xbox live, Xbox one’s, and the games for everyone to have in a room… just to play each other. Thanks for the kick in the gut.
Rant Over.
So, you didn’t do your homework, and that becomes 343i’s fault? Games have long been shying away from splitscreen. Slowly yet surely. Yes, it’s a little surprising given Halo’s past dealings with it, but it’s how the industry is going.
I’m pretty sure they are proud of their 60 FPS, because it is a challenge to achieve on consoles.
What faith in 343i are you no longer putting into them? Faith in their ability to create a solid game or the ability to create a game with local coop? If local coop is all you want, then there are other numerous games that can scratch that itch.
Your Halo Experience doesn’t have to be ruined. Just take turns.
This has been big news for a while. If you just learned that there is no split screen then you probably haven’t been following the game much
I feel you.
Local co-op/split screen is the BIGGEST disappoint. 60 FPS is really not a big enough deal to me to scrap something like that. Halo was like the last vestige of split-screen guest play/couch play…whatever people call it.
So unbelievably sad to not have it.
No split screen has been common knowledge for quite some time now. Letting your kid skip school for his birthday sounds like crappy parenting to me.

This is hardly the place to lecture one on parenting. How dare you. It’s good for parents and children to have activities to bond over; I’m sure he’d get more out of that than a single day in public education anyway, but I digress.
I’m sad the tradition of co-op is gone too, but I will survive. Threads like this may make 343 rethink their approach in the future. Perhaps it will be more technologically feasible for Halo 6. Here’s to wishful thinking.

Take turns?! Have you ever tried that out? No, that will not work, because everyone wants to play Halo 5 at the same time. Plus it is more fun and memorable playing couch co-op. I’m sorry if you don’t think that, but that is what a lot of players believe. Halo is also one of the best games to play couch co-op on because of all the silliness you can do in campaign or in multiplayer. And frankly, 343i didn’t exactly gave us a proper announcement that there will be no split screen in Halo 5, you can’t blame people for assuming that it will be in the upcoming Halo given the fact that it had been included in every Halo game up to date. Whoever wants split screen in Halo 5 couldn’t care less for 60 fps.
There’s a split-screen discussion thread already that you are welcome to contribute to.
