Man…
Many of you who know me know that I am a huge 343i supporter, and have been doing nothing but backing Halo 4 and it’s changes. I didn’t do this blindly. I honestly felt like these were improvements to the series.
Then the news about no ranking system came. I was bummed, but since there seemed to be hope for the future, I wasn’t too upset about it.
However, I then came to find out that there will be no 2v2 playlist at launch. I just cannot fathom this one bit. At all. 2v2 has always appealed to me as the most strategic playlist of all. Just enough players where you can work as a team, but not too much that you have too many people just running in, or getting into 2v1 or 3v1 situations.
The playlist was wonderful, and many 3rd party websites host 2v2 Tournaments more often than other setups. Forgehub, Halotracker, HaloCharts, FLAG Tournament, etc. all held many 2v2 tournaments. It is really going to prove difficult practicing for a 2v2 tournament (if they decide to go through with one) without having a Doubles playlist to practice in.
Aside from the experience, I find it quite a bit easier to find ONE extra friend online who I know that I can cooperate at a competitive level with rather than 3 all at the same time. I believe this is going to really force me to go in with random teammates or friends of friends of friends who I really don’t understand how to play with.
I know, I know, “get friends”. I have tons of friends. I know my friends list will be full of 30+ people on H4 each day. However, I like to play at a highly competitive level at some points, playing with the top ranked players in the world, and it’s not every day I can come across the group of few people that I feel comfortable competing with like that. Yes, I like to take things seriously once in a while.
Team Doubles has always been a home. It has been an EXTREMELY popular playlist throughout the Halo series. On top of that, it has also proved to be the most populated playlist. Tons of people were dumbstruck when Arena Doubles was removed and replaced with Double Team, while “The Arena” took center stage as the only ranked playlist, aside from it holding a constant lower population than Arena Doubles. It sucked, but you know what? At least we still had a Doubles playlist.
Now, I am currently working with a charity website that is currently working to establish a list of maps and gametype settings for their up and coming 2v2 tournament. I would be extremely thrilled to speak with someone about our findings and what we find would be suitable for a playlist, if you are looking for suggestions.
All I can hope for is that a 2v2 playlist will be released soon after. I understand that most maps are larger than usual, but there are a few in there that appear as though they would flow well. I guarantee you that it will see more players than dedicated playlists such as “King of the Hill”.
This is not a thread bashing Halo 4 or 343i. I find that 343i has made significant strides to improve the series, and that Halo 4 will indeed be a solid game. However, in that love comes extreme worry. I worry that this idea to leave out a 2v2 playlist will do NOTHING but hurt the title.
