Nice "ranking" system, 343.

Me and my mate are unranked in Halo 5’s team doubles and we get put up against two Onyx ranks. Obviously we get destroyed, but choose not to quite so we don’t look bad. How is this even fair, and allowed to happen?
P.S. One of the enemy players was a smurf account. Obviously made it so he could face off against new or unranked players.

Doubles population is so sparse that this is super likely. Which sucks.

Isn’t this an issue because of the matchmaking system, rather than the ranking system?

Well no, we played a game previously and won. It’s people abusing the system and 343’s inability to put people up against similar ranks.

Although you appear as unranked, the ranking system has a sort of “placeholder” rank underneath it to determine your actual rank after 10 matches. I tend to be pitched against Gold/Plat in my first unranked match and depending on whether I win or not it goes up or down.
After winning 3 matches in a row or so (because Golds and Plats are usually below my skill level) I see I’m getting pitched against Diamonds and Onyx’s.

Eventually what I think happens is that the system looks at what ranks you won against and what ranks you lost against and calculates your eventual rank from that.

TL;DR
The system is testing if you can handle Onyx, take it as a compliment.

Prolly due to the sparse population. I wish there was a way to track how many people were on, from what country and what time.

Players abusing the system is one thing, smurf accounts, but putting people against others with similar rank is an issue with the Matchmaking system and not with ranking.

So you’re wondering why the game doesn’t know which ranks to put you with, if you’re unranked? Seriously?

Smurfs never put themselves in the Onyx rank. That is literally the rank below Champion. Smurfs almost always place themselves in Silver or Gold.

The Dude’s gamerscore was 60. He even admitted to it when I asked him if it was a smurf account. And I quote “aye cheers for the free win”.

Wow matchmaking systems screwed u guys over to place you against 2 onyx. But it doesnt make sense to call him a smurf since you said that both were onyx rank ?

And? If he was Onyx, that means he will most likely put with closer ranked players. You’re not even ranked.

Dude I don’t even know myself. But it’s bull how the system put us against too very experienced people at doubles. I hardly ever play team doubles. I’ve started playing Halo 2 on MCC again in it’s still unfinished state, because Halo 2’s multiplayer is just way more fun.

Unlucky i guess. Maybe because of small population of the playlist, either way you shld play reach since its BC issues are fixed.

A few variables have already been mentioned in the thread but also, during your 10 placement matches, the game will pitch you against varying opponents in order to find where in the ranking system you fit in. Win a few games and it will try pitching you against higher ranks, lose a few games and it´ll probably match you against lower ranks and finally (hopefully) give you an appropriate rank. At least that´s how I have understood the process of the placement matches. You final rank will also take previous ranks into consideration.

He only had 2 placement matches so i think your point is invalid in this case, normally true in most cases but for OPs case it doesnt cover it

Admittedly I didn´t consider he only had 2 placement matches at that point. I guess population vs matchmaking time frames set by 343 is the culprit for being pitted against Onyx in this case.
