This is such a hugely overlooked feature. It would help everything from using halo as a spectator game, to creating machinima, to being able to simply watch a match of your friend playing. You could use it to coach your friend to get better, or for a more experienced friend you yours to coach you to get better. Online games could have neutral hosts play as the spectator. This is great for online tournaments like those featured in Grifball leagues, gamebattles, ect…
It has been present in tons of different games, and with a little effort shouldn’t be too terribly difficult to implement. It doesn’t even have to be all super fancy. Something like what we get with theater, but allowing it to be used live.
Obviously this wouldn’t be used in ranked games, but customs, it would be incredibly valuable.

I’d prefer if they focussed on the more important things in the game first, and then add the cool new features.
As long as we can only view our team-mates. I hate having CSS LAN parties because my friends always ghost for people on their team.

Two different things. Theater is for post-game viewing, saving clips, viewing other player’s perspectives from the game you were playing in.
Spectator is real-time viewing without participating in the game. A lot of PC games do this.
This would be an awesome feature for customs, MLG comes to mind with this idea.

I still don’t understand the big difference. But if it’ll make people happy sure go for it. As long as the spectator can’t spy on the other team(s).

At least how it works in TF2 is that the spectators are team-neutral, can change perspective at will, and have a free camera at their disposal.

The idea behind spectating is to not be a participant of any team and be able to watch all the action live without interfering, like spectating a sporting event.
Awesome idea, so long as party chat is blocked for the spectators. The spectators should never be able to communicate with the players. I normally hate the concept of blocking party chat, but it definitely makes sense in a spectator mode.
I know it’s bad, but when I first heard the name “Arena”, I seriously thought it was a spectator mode. I was so disappointed.
