News, future updates and changes to come. New information from Ske7ch

Yesterday we had the last 343i direct from Twitch of the year and Ske7ch has offered us some exciting new information that I have not seen commented here, I bring it to you in a summary of Resetera:

  • The Tenrai Event Pass has been updated, now items that were originally planned to go into the store are being added to the Tenrai Event Pass (replacing consumables.)
  • There was an internal failure of communication/review, that resulted in specific Yoroi event armour (i.e. Kabuto) being used in promotional/marketing material for the free event.
  • In the future they will ensure that it is clear in marketing/promotional material what is free/earn-able vs paid.
  • Additional event challenges have been added so players will always be able to progress through the event without normal challenges getting in the way.
  • They are reviewing the value of the items in the store, bundles, emblems, coatings etc.
  • They understand/knew that changing Halo’s business model from a $60 boxed product to a F2P model “was not going to be inherently satisfying to most of our players.”
  • They are looking/working on changes to their model to not rely on the typical F2P model tropes to be effective (experimenting on new stuff.)
  • They are looking at changes to free and paid customisation to make it more rewarding.
  • They are reviewing how the core system works (i.e. cross-core), as well as emblems and coatings across multiple pieces of content.
  • They are working on getting into a rhythm of communicating to the player base what they are working on/what their focus is.
  • Further updates to playlists (Ex Ranked playlists.)
  • Working on getting details about future balance patches and how they’re going to regularly roll out.
  • They are working on ensuring free players are earning higher quality content at a better rate and reviewing how they add more of that content.
  • They don’t like the current XP boost system and are reviewing/working on improvements.
  • They want to add difficulty markers on challenges.
  • Add/make changes to ranked based on feedback (playlists, backfill, MMR, UI info etc.)
  • They are working on these changes/issues while simultaneously working on season 2, season 3 and bugs (Plus Co-op/Split-screen and Forge.)
  • They have previously stated that they are working on a separate progression system on top of the battle pass, as well as adding more performance based XP systems.
  • “Reprioritization is happening constantly with limited time and resources. What can we do now to make massive impact.” (All these changes will take time to implement.)
  • “Losing your mind is unnecessary and the best way to get tuned out”

What is your opinion?

Thanks for posting this.

I am only playing the free multiplayer and haven’t had a chance to spend money (not so much cash for the rest of the year). Yesterday I got a notification on my old xbox one, that there is a update available for Infinite. It is around 16 GB, anyone might know what’s up with that?

Thanks for making a list of all the things, I really appreciate it and I like all the points. Looks like a lot of the criticisms were taken to heart and are being worked on. Especially with the Tenrai event which makes me real happy since I like that core the most I didn’t want to spend more money for the helmet I would actually want.

My opinion is that every single one of these problems is because it’s free to play.

Had it not been free to play we wouldn’t have

Events.
Battle pass
The store.

Almost all of the talking points in this post are about the above and the ones that aren’t are affected because of the above.

They even stated that they knew going free to play wasn’t on the intrest of most players but did it anyways.
What’s this about experimental models? How about the one that has always worked?

Release multiplayer and campagin as a full $60 product. No one asked for it to be free to play

I 2nd this.

If they knew players would hate it, why in the flying booty did they do it anyway?

He just kinda subtly revealed the whole “give them the worst version of something, so when we adjust it, players will think we’re doing them a favor” tactic that many developers use.

Unless they were somehow forced to go F2P outside of their control, this is pretty asinine.

I mean that’s great and all but…

For those of us that just want to play the game, I’m disappointed that there wasn’t much of any discussion about fixing any of the actual game-play issues.
(i.e. weapon balancing and spawns, vehicle balancing and spawns, hit detection and desync issues, player collision, etc.)

Yup. This is why it being free to play is bad because they focus all their time fixing a system that no one asked for instead of fixing important things like bugs and missing content

This! I 100% agree with all you stated.

Any information about adding Service Record? I feel like all my matches are just worthless because there’s no trace that I’ve done anything. No statistics or records, nothing. I miss the old Halo games where they even had frickin’ heatmaps, not to mention statistics for almost every bullet shot.

Pretty much all I am getting out of this is “F*** it WE WILL DO IT LIVE”

You know, this could have been solved if you gave the people who bought the campaign everything free for let’s say two years, and made them pay for exclusive content…

That is nice to hear. The typical F2P tropes are trash, kind of insane to think people still pay for them though.

Back to my first point, and I will be coming back to this a lot…if you gave the people that bought the campaign more free stuff this might have helped. Also, what about the flights…that did not provide enough feedback for them to see this was a problem?

Who in their right mind thought this was a good idea. After the almost full customization we had in Halo 5 and you drop it down to only being able to customize based on a set pallet of colors and what armor parts go with a core? Asinine. Still for the life of me cannot figure out (besides the greed) why in a game like this where people have been loving the customization, why is not nearly every single aspect of our Spartans COMPLETELY customizable?

Back to what I mentioned earlier…part of this would be resolved if you gave everything away for free to the people who bought the campaign. Secondly…you really thought that we were going to just let you give us challenge swap after challenge swap and not be incredibly angry about it?

Screw it, we had the flights to tell us it was not very good but just ship the product anyway?

Again…we had the flights and gave feedback then that this was not very good…did NO ONE in the studio object to any of this stuff? Were there no gamers playing the game for QA to give feedback to say “you know no one is going to like how this works right?”

Thank you for summing it up! I’m actually really excited about what they’re doing with Tenrai, actually makes it worth looking forwards to. It proves that they aren’t afraid to make drastic changes to anything, even the store content, and paints a brighter picture on what sort of things they could do to fix the other systems.

Of course… it would’ve been preferable to not have had these issues in the first place, but 343 doesn’t have the reputation of “good launch company.” A game like this plays to their long-term-support strengths and I hope they take advantage of that.

The part that really makes all of Infinite’s failures hurt even more is the fact that they’ve already demonstrated with MCC that they’re more than capable of constructing good, engaging multiplayer systems with fair incentives to keep people playing. They took a game that was released completely, horribly broken, and did a complete turnaround on it. They also showed with the Flighting system for MCC a good plan to get actual player feedback before releasing a full product; why we only had three Flights before release date is completely beyond me. Furthermore, it seems like much of the feedback from those Flights was completely disregarded in regards to weapon balance; I don’t know of anybody that asked for the changes to the Bulldog, Ravager, Commando, etc.

The best you can do right now is Halo Tracker.

Weird how they have the API to track stats, but the company who made the game doesn’t.

I was going to comment on that, from what I understand the website relies on the registration of the games themselves to create their stats, so Halo Infinite actually has a stats system in place and working, but they’re just not showing them.

On this issue I have two opposing opinions, on the one hand I am not in favor of competitive statistics in social modes and I am glad that nothing appears until these statistics are rethought to a non-competitive approach.

On the other hand, I don’t see any point in not having such competitive stats for ranked games. They are necessary and important.

This is what happens when half the reddit and waypoint community only care about cosmetics . Most of these issues are being discussed regularly but get drowned out over topics talking about optional cosmetics to death.

The Commando is garbage. When I can get more kills with the “weaker” Sidekick you know something went wrong.

I probably should have played MCC, but I already played 1-4 and Reach so I never felt a need to pick up the collection.

ALthough I saw some of those armors that came out over the summer…man were they beautiful.

Good points.

If I remember correctly…they once said that player collision is in the game but it is server issues that make it seem like it is not in the game

Which is their own damn fault for digging themselves in a hole with a terrible monetization system and being infinitely behind during production.

Then why the hell did they make it F2P?

Meh. That’s a lot of damage control for a lot of stuff that was obviously going to happen and cause a lot of backlash, as they seem to have admitted.

Losing ones mind is to be expected now. Even if you have a spot on surefire hit, with lots of content for a good price you are going to get players losing their mind. Highlighting it while admitting to your mistakes is a bad take, it makes crazy players seem like they are being talked down to, which just in turn fuels the outrage. Just drop it and move on.

Best way to get communication going is through your main front page of halowaypoint.com and halowaypoint.com/news. Not just Reddit or Twitter or Twitch or what the streamers are using because that’s where you think you are going to get the best HCS push. You want to bring in lapsed fans with kids? They aren’t on Twitch, or Twitter, or Reddit.
