New to RTS

I love the Halo universe and all that in it. I’ve never played an RTS game before and that genre has never appealed to me. I’ve watched all cut scenes from Halo Wars because I wanted to know the story. After watching the new trailer for Halo Wars 2 I’m crazy excited for that story. So excited that I’m considering buying the game, but I’m afraid I’ll buy it and end up not liking RTS. Is it worth paying $60 to try it out?

If you have the time to devote to it, I’d recommend getting it. For an RTS, It’s about as simple as you can get. I’d also recommend watching this YouTube channel’s new video series entitled Halo Wars 2 tips and tricks. He’s a high-level Halo Wars player, and for Halo Wars 2 he’s going back to the basics to explain it all for newcomers.

lol, get Miz those views! We don’t want him to shrivel away to nothing.

If you’ve never liked RTS in general, I have my doubts that you’d like Halo Wars 2. However, it might depend on what RTS you’ve tried playing (that you formed your opinion from).

I love RTS in general, but there are RTS that I don’t care for.

So what ones have you played before, OP?

There are so many different kinds of RTS games it’d be difficult to say if you’ll like it or not.

What exactly is it that has never appealed to you with RTS games?

Then again, I suggest testing the Beta which should be happening, so you can form an opinion.

Different ones on iPhone, never anything on a console

I’ve just always preferred first person shooters, the RTS scene looks more of a chore than fun. But since it’s Halo I’m willing to give it a try. I missed out on the beta

Well, what exactly is it that makes them look like chores to you?

Resource management?
Scouting?
Infrastructure construction?

There’s a second beta coming.

Yes, all of those reasons. When is the second beta?

I’ve never played an RTS on iPhone…it’s certainly not their native platform.

To get a proper feel for RTS you need to play one on PC. I don’t believe that an iPhone RTS can properly showcase the genre. (I’ve never played any, but those mobile RTS look like more of a bastardization of the genre than anything else)

I guess I could go buy a preowned Halo Wars at GameStop for a few dollars and give it a shot

If I can chime in with some advice on RTS in general:

I’m an RTS fan but I really couldn’t get into the HW2 beta because of how difficult/clunky the controls are with a gamepad (They’re good controls for a console RTS, but coming off the back of competitive Startcraft 2 I was on struggle/frustration street, but I know others who find it extremely intuitive). I loved the first Halo Wars but the controls detracted from the experience a lot and stopped me getting into the multiplayer.

So my advice:

  • Get it on PC if you can****OR

  • Don’t play any PC RTS games before Halo Wars 2. It won’t be a nice comparison.Picking up HW for a few dollars would give good indication of if you’ll like it on xbox though.

Cheers champ! I made them for anyone wanting a better understanding on how to play RTS games, I would say half the people who played on my friends list, never understood the basics. (Doing all the basics makes you into a good player) and I know once I explained things to them, they definitely felt they had a better understanding of what they had to do and how to win.

Ps I saw that Rudy haha

Thanks everyone.

If I were in your position I would wait until Halo Wars 2 gets a nice sale, and get it then. I doubt you’d find it worth 60 dollars if you’re just in it for the campaign and story content.

Yeah, Halo Wars is the RTS made for people who haven’t played RTS. I’d suggest giving it a try, gotta make risks if you wasn’t to figure things out.

BTW what ‘mobile RTSs’ have you played, cause an RTS game on mobile is probably quite pathetic.
