New to MM and there is something i dont get

Greetings all,

While I’ve played HW quite a bit, I only recently started applying myself to MM. In a recent match, I got trounced (no surprise really). What got me was how quickly it occurred and I was wondering if anyone could offer some insight.

Specifically I had the Trueskill rating of 2, was matched up against a 31. I played Forge the opponent was the Prophet. I am not terribly familiar with the prophet, only playing a few times in skirmish, but 6 minutes into the match I was rushed with 6 wraiths, the Prophet and 2 Scorpios. Thats the part I don’t get is how the opponent amassed armor so quickly. Typically, I will follow up with an opponent just for chat, tips etc, but this player seemed to have an “non-contact” account (if the makes sense).

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers,
Brad

See thats sorta how covie works
You can amass a army rather quickly with only level 1 tech then send your leader to the enemy base and tele.

Always be careful of covie leader. They can make faster money then you. Their super unit can do devastating damage. D.D.D.
Plus their teleporter is a instant pelican

my best tip for you is this
If your forge 1v1 oneing a covie
Lock your base at start of game
Try your best to build 5-6 cyclopes. keep the bace locked
If they attack they will normally go to the back. make sure to D bomb them once they are in the back. then unlock your base and hurry the cyclopes over to there. They sould run strait to there bace to kill the cyclopses.
(make sure you are taking out there temple. this will destroy there tech in one swoop stopping them from producing more wraiths. Then now you have a hole in the back you can send your cyclops’s threw to the main base.
If your cyclops’s haven’t been dealt with yet and his prophets still attacking you
you sould win as cyclopes destroy -Yoink- really quickly. Unless he is using the beam but you sould d bomb him every time he trys it

I don’t know if cyclops are such a good idea… I would suggest hogs to kill the factory or some spartans to high jack the wraiths (depends on map).

Thanks, a lot of the strategy still escapes me, but you did give me the insight on how it works so that helps a lot.

Well on a covie base i know with out shields just 4 can rip it to shreds
Not sure if with shields
and I know UNSC bases dont really have much of a good chance ether
SO its good as long as they arnt seen entail its to late.

If PoR is building wraiths all he has to do is pump out one wraith and it will kill all the cyclopes or he could just recall and shoot them down while wraiths are still on your base.

Ya but most likely the PoR wont even bother sending a wraith to deal with the cyclopes
I mean would you?
against 4 cyclopes?
wouldnt you just keep sending the wraiths to the other guys base to beat him to the kill

A lot of your problem might be that, because you aren’t used to online play quite yet, you are just building really slow. You can get away with a lot of dumb things against the AI or other very low-level players in a private match and chances are you simply have to adjust to the faster paced games online.

It doesn’t take very long to learn decent builds and those builds can coast you through TS 30 pretty easily.

Im going to agree that cyclops base rushing might not be that good of an idea. UNSC direct counters aren’t good vs COV. The only direct counter i use vs COV, which I uses almost never is wolves. And thats only when I dont have time or tech to get gauss.

There is one simple equation for winning all UNSC vs COVIE games which is hogs/infantry/mainline. Hogs for picking up crates, stopping buildings urrets, forcing recalls, camping teleporter, and clearing expos. Infantry for anti-infantry, leaders, and hooks. Then once you have pushed him off enough, start producing mainline units to defeat his units and destory his base.

Here is my last high level game. It was my anders vs brute on tundra. I used my hogs to kill his chopper and prevented his chieftien from getting any crates. I collected 1100, while he only collected 400. Collecting crates will win you the game. I also forced him to recall once. He brute rushed, I pushed him off with flamers. Continued to push on his leader with my flamers while starting to produce tanks (my mainline unit). He then pushed again with shielded tanks and I defened my base without lose. Then I took the late expo, which is always better, taking an early expo leave you vunerable and is not neccesary to win. The early expo will give you a disadvantage when defending it, where at your main base you have a huge defenders advantage. From there I made a few wolves to protect my tanks while using my flamers to counter his hunters and get the middle mega turret. Following the rules of warthogs\infantry\mainline I was able to win this game easy.

Another Rule of Thumb for UNSC vs COV battles is if your flamers are 1 tech higher then there leader Y ability it cost more money for them then it does for you. So even if you have 2-3 flamers, keep them on his leader. For every 1 flamer he spends 150, so you losing 3 flamer compared to him losing 3 banshees. The more tech they have the more money it will take for the Y ability to kill them.

> Then I took the late expo, which is always better, taking an early expo leave you vunerable and is not neccesary to win. Also, be sure to understand that this excerpt applies primarily to 1v1 matches. Because you will have a teammate to help in team games, early expos are the key to winning in Party Teams. True, they are still not always deciding factors, but in Party Teams specifically, the earlier the expo, the earlier the Tank lead is won.

Here is another recent high level game Anders vs Pro on Release. He did a temple 2nd early tank rush with his prophet. But I picked up 800 (2x as much as him) and made him recall once with leader while harrassing him while he went to my base. I was able to eco boost while slowing down the time it takes for him to get to my base. I upgraded my base and went quick tanks. Bypassing infantry because they had no purpose. I got my first tank out and had the 2nd half built right when he got to my base and dropped in 3 shielded tanks. With one turret i was easly able to defend, killed his prophet and destroyed his tanks. Then I upgraded 1 reactor got cani, deleted for a pad. Then got an expo right before my attack so I knew he wouldnt hit it. I killed 4 pads, then pulled back to get PT. He then went air but my PT was strong enough to counter it and I pushed FTW. Both games I used defender advantage at my main, then got the expo late game safely.

Halo - Official Site (en)

I used the same rule of hogs\inf\mainline, but had no need for inf because it was a non hook map and he was not inf rushing(brute rushing). If i would not harrassed and picked up crates perfectly I would of loss because he would of got to my base before my 1st tank was done. Always with your hogs, take the crates his leader can pick up kill his scout, then force a recall or slow down the time it take for him to get to you’re base

I just thought of something
lock your base at start

try your best to prepair 3 spartans. you sould be able to do it in 4-3 minutes. if he hasnt attacked yet unlock and sent them to the back. the minute he sends in wraiths jack them and use them against him

Spartans are a big risk and most level 30+ 1v1 players wont let themselves get jack’d. Keep it simple hogs\inf\mainline. This equation will win every UNSC vs COV battle.

Or instaresign. Either way you’ll lose.

6 minutes isn’t really a rush but if the covies comes down on you hard and you don’t expect it you are in trouble.

If you can’t find someone to spar with online for practice , try going against 2 Heroics or Legendarys just to see if you can hold your own at the beginning .

You could as well demolish your own base as build cyclops to defend it/counter attack. Take a word from Wild Arms FX and build some hogs (and at least on hook maps some flamers).

I appreciate “thanks” if you like my advice

It’s threads and answers like these that make me stay on Lazyfrog…

I dont think that unsc combo will necessarily work every time against a skilled covie using an actual strategy although i do admit that being harassed by warthogs is the single most annoying thing ever as a covie when you are trying to gather supplies. As long as covies stay to some jackals and lots of hunters you wont win with hogs/inf/tanks. Scorpions arent the answer to everything as people think for some reason. Also what kind of covie player is so stupid as to try and use wraiths as their mainline? Wraiths are only good against infantry for the most part, if you stack those against scorpion tanks you would get destroyed every time without air or hunter support. From experience i can say if someone goes wraiths its either because they dont consider you a challenge or they think they have an upper hand already. Even when i do it im never dumb enough to go pure wraith tanks thats a recipe for disaster.
