So, have you played the original Halo Wars? If not, I highly suggest picking it up and let the game do the explaining.

I highly suggest buying it and playing it first. That way you can determine if you like RTS games, and then you’ll know what’s going on in the sequel.
Halo Wars 1 has a very good story and the soundtrack is very epic ;D
Halo Wars 1 is backwards compatible I’m pretty sure. It’d be cheaper to grab a copy of it for probably around $6 and play through the game. Like the other guys have mentioned, it’d be cheaper to play the first one to see if you like the RTS genre. The first game is slower than the second from what I could gather from the Beta so getting Halo Wars 1 for 360 will only do you some good.

If you can, play the first one. Its a safer bet for diving into new ground. After you beat it, just uninstall it from your hardrive. Hopefully that’ll leave you enough room.
If you’re getting Halo Wars 2 for just the story, you’re not really getting a big bang for your buck. RTSs are pretty easy to get into though, so I’d suggest playing MP as well. Halo Wars has always been a very simple RTS. Just remember Air beats Vehicles, Vehicles beats Infantry, Infantry beats Air.

The UNSC is more beginner friendly, so I’d suggest playing as Anders and building up your economy before building tanks. The build goes: Supply pad x2, reactor, supply pad x2, get fortress, reactor, vehicle depot. After you get comfortable with that build after a few games, make sure you start queueing up Warthogs as you build your first few buildings until you’ve got around 4 of them. Then once the reactor comes up, get the gunner upgrade and go to the enemy base to see if you can delay any of their buildings. Then proceed with the usual tank spam. I’d suggest playing 3v3, since it’s decidedly the least competitive playlist. After you get comfortable with 3s, I’d also advise playing 1v1.
But of course, skill comes with experience. Just make sure you’re learning from the matches you’re playing. Always ask “what did I do wrong?” when you lose and “what did I do right?” when you win. That’s the most important thing.
