New to Halo Wars, but....

I’ve played SC2 for a year now and have been able to get pretty far up the ladder in it. I was planning on getting Halo Wars when it first came out, but never got around to it. Now that I do, I was wondering if I could get a summary of online play, like the flow of it, and an easy way to learn the game’s basics and some stategies for noobs. Any tips would be much appreciated, or an easy place to find high level games to watch.
Thatnk you all for your input in advance.

http://www.youtube.com/user/bb2010halowars (probably the best 1v1 player back when he played, still awesome and helpfull videos)
http://www.youtube.com/user/bas1sta (not the highest level but probably the best channel and most entertaining if you want to know the basics of high level)
http://www.youtube.com/user/IKihz (high level 2v2)

those are the ones I find usefull

What do you plan on playing 1v1, 2v2, 3v3?

The UNSC play a lot like Terran in SC2, whereas the Covenant play a lot like Warcraft 3, with a hero unit your army is focused around.

The main differences between HW and SC2 is that Halo Wars gets going a lot faster, but peaks much sooner. You’re not wasting the first 4-6 minutes of the match building your base, by 6 minutes you could have amassed half your population count, but whereas the resource system in SC2 is just kicking in around this point, in HW, you get diminishing returns on every supply pad you build, so you don’t get a sudden explosion of units.

Also, it’s much easier to keep your army alive in HW, so being economical with your units is very important because healing your Hogs or tanks is a lot cheaper than building new ones.

Micro is far more important than macro. There’s virtually no macro in HW other than learning build orders and understanding turret blind spots. In HW units move slowly and are easy to micro, so this is what you need to focus on.

There’s a lot of talk on SC2 about timing attacks, the Halo Wars equivalent is getting a tech level ahead of your opponent and hitting them with your higher teched units. Every time a unit gets a tech upgrade, ALL of its stats get a boost, so Tech 2 hogs not only get grenade damage, their standard attack does more, and they have more health. Learn the differences the tech upgrades make. Once you understand this, HW will start making a lot more sense.

Also, there are a lot of map specific features that don’t have an equivalent in SC2, reactor hooks and money hooks are very very important because they allow you to get the upgrades I’ve just mentioned above without teching to them. Learn these map features and how to control them.

You’ll find the standard of HW a lot lower than SC2, your win% will be ridiculous compared to SC2. And for the most part, (I play both) I enjoy HW more because of its more immediate action, less cheese, and greater focus on micro.

Its a fun and easy to learn game. Watch some high level YT channels, add high level players and get good.

Beware of generals who rush…unfortunately that happens every game.

Beware of Forge’s enormous shlong.

Beware of kids who never adapt and learn how to play RTS games.
Rushing is part of the game, learn to defend or counterattack and continue to the midgame.

It’s true there are a lot of bad players who send vitriolic hate messages when they get rushed. I have often thought of starting a post quoting them because some are hilarious, but the language is soooo bad it would be censored to oblivion or removed.

If they OP has indeed done well at SC2, he should know and understand the importance of a decent rush. Like others have said, watch videos, play and learn. It won’t be long before you can enjoy reading your own hate mail

You beat the game 20 times?..You know there’s online play, right?

He’s never played a game of HW online and has a 0.54 K/D ratio on Halo 4, so he’s not the best, he’s not even average…

Check out my K/D ratio in Halo 4 if you desire.

Barely any kills and a large percentage of flood games played…LOL

Me general.
Me no rush.

Play some “automatic diffulcty” skirmish games, that’ll help.
You can also play some 3v3 skirmish games on legendary to watch the AI play.
Play some skirmish on normal, try out the units, pick a good strategy.
Just play online and watch your teammates, reallly helpful.

This is how I learned to play it, and I’m pretty decent now.

Um, his K/D in Regicide is 5.85. I’d be telling everyone to check my K/D too if it was that high

how far up the ladder is “pretty far up the ladder.”
