I just came up with this one. So at then end of Escalation we know that John has gone rogue and is taking mission after mission after flat out refusing the chance to relax. It’s safe to say he’s trying to get himself killed in action seeing as humanity is safe from the Didact and the composer, and Cortana is dead so John isn’t doing so well mentally.
Cut to Halo 5, Locke gives Chief a reason to fight again. Proposed as a suicide mission by Locke, he offers John the chance to save humanity while dying a hero’s death. John accepts, seeing as he’s got nothing better to do, and during this mission he has an epiphany near the end of the campaign. Realizing his life has new meaning, he can carry on without the burden of Cortana’s death haunting him forever.
Locke finds himself in similar situations as John and disobeys direct orders to bring him home.
