Because Gold and Platinum are the two middle tiers, and without knowing anything else about a player the system hasn’t seen before, the middle is the safest bet.
If you instead started them at the bottom, then truly terrible players would get smashed all day long by unknowns.
Better to have an unknown play a middle match first to measure on performance whether they can stay in the middle or move out quickly.
Also, in general, Platinum and Gold are the largest groups, so MOST players really ARE Plat or Gold. In which case, it’s the right place for most placement match players to be.

I’ve been playing for a week and I go positive probably 3/4 of the time but my rank hasn’t moved from level 1 because I only win half of the time. Other players shouldn’t be punished when a teammate quits or goes 2 and 20

The issue isn’t necessarily in the ranking system and there’s no reason to get butthurt if you plan on playing in the long term. Every season will reset ranks. Believe it or not who you kill and your KDR/A has a huge effect on your MMR, which isn’t shown. There’s a reason why if you queue with people that are currently playing in Onyx/Champ you’ll be placed in onyx because you are killing higher ranked kids – this also applies to the lower ranks. If you’re losing 1v1 battles vs platinum/diamond level players then you shouldn’t expect to be in Onyx anyway. There are also a handful of playlists so if you find yourself ranked lower than you should be across the board then it’s probably not the system. Also, when social comes out it will weed out a lot of the bad players and make TS much more enjoyable

I did. I was ranked onyx in FFA. But I want all my ranks onyx and it is near impossible. I had three go onyx right off the bat, one diamond and one platnium. I have been trying to get the plat up since day one, but it keepa putting me with bad teams, so it’s not possible.

Acknowledging there are good reasons why some have bad games also due to the latency issues is important. If you match people from different regions (such as US vs EU) you´re gonna have both players who do better than their skill and those who do worse than their skill simply because they are not playing on even terms! Plus anyone can have an off game. I agree the ranking system is not entirely satisfactory, but the matching of players from different regions on mostly US servers is a far more aggravating issue.

I honestly think if one player on a team AFK’s, drops out or team kills, the whole match should then not be ranked.
Of course this then beings in the issue, if you are losing one player could just quit out and everyone would keep their rank.
It’s a hard one, I honestly think H5 ranking is pretty good.
