New Proving Grounds Themes!

Yes you heard me, Proving Grounds, the map for the Blitz mode, will be receiving two free themes that you could play on while playing Blitz. The themes will release for free for everyone with the new DLC leader, rumored to be UNSC (I guess plans changed after Colony and Kinsano’s messy releases, as they said we’d get a second Banished leader after Colony during HW2 Live.)

The new themes, Sirocco and Nocturne, will change up Proving Grounds quite a bit. Sirocco appears to be based on the desert terrain featured on some maps and missions. Meanwhile Nocturne appears to be a nighttime version of the map.

And before you go complaining to 343i that they should be releasing new maps instead of reskinning the only map in Blitz, this is the design philosophy behind Blitz:

“Keep in mind that the Blitz design philosophy is to create a single fair playing arena with the only variable being the units, decks and team-tactics. As such, these new themed maps will play the same but should at least offer up some nice visual variety for fans of Blitz.”

So yeah, whether you like it or not, Blitz will only feature one map with various themes.

I think this makes to play Blitz more exciting, in my personal case at least for the first weeks after the update.

Well… That’s kind of boring. We ask for new maps, and what do we get? “Here are some new themes for the same map and a reminder that we don’t want to create actual new maps for the game mode, because -Yoink- you!” Because that’s how you make a successful RTS, by only giving the players a single map. I don’t care if their design philosophy is only to have a single map, it’s a bad philosophy that should be changed.

It’s not like I can even play this game anyway. I sat around searching for a game for 20 minutes a couple of days ago without a match, which happens pretty much every time I try to play the game. So the odds of me seeing these “new maps” are quite low.

I’m fine with the map variations as long as they’re aesthetically pleasing. I feel I’m going to enjoy Nocturne very much.

This makes sense for the game mode, and is something I’ve thought they should do.
Only completely symmetrical maps would work well for Blitz, as such there isn’t much of an option for a completely different map.
That said, they could move the high grounds and inaccessible areas to different portions of the map to change things up a little but there still isn’t much to work with.

Yes, I think Nocturne is gonna be cool. Reminds me first mission in the campaign.

This is really cool! Hopefully they will balance blitz so that it’s worth playing, though.

On another note, what’s the source for us getting another UNSC leader? Care to elaborate?

He didn’t confirm it at all. He said that it’s probably safe enough to announce that it’s a UNSC leader. There was no official confirmation in that statement at all.

Let’s not forget that Blitz is just a cheesy attempt at the MOBA formula. Since when did MOBAs ever got new maps?

They did say that they were inspired by the MOBA formula with just one map and the variety coming from the different strategies you’ll encounter. He’s not completely wrong in comparing it to MOBAs, despite it not being quite an attempt at the same formula.

Did they? I guess I missed that part because this feels more like RTS Hearthstone than a MOBA

Although I like the idea that it will freshen up blitz it’s still exactly the same map so it will get stale pretty soon. It also means that it’s highly unlikely we’ll see different blitz maps, with a different layout. I assume this is because they would want to stick to a “fair game” philosophy so no one has an advantage when control of a section of the map. However one, testing would eliminate that and two, the ridge between B and C give players who use it an advantage anyway. Plus if your a higher level you’ll have better blitz cards. On the other hand they are free so its to be expected to be very similar to the original.

Yeah, they said that in an update talking about feedback regarding there only being one map for Blitz. They said that they wanted the mode to be like a MOBA, which is why they never considered putting in one map. But RTS Hearthstone is a valid comparison as well, to some extent.

What are some balance suggestions you and other players have for Blitz?
