New perspective on armor coatings and tier systems

I’m gonna get a little personal to start this post, so I apologize if this isn’t a great way to open a Waypoint thread. My father was recently diagnosed with a rare type of late-stage, untreatable cancer. The entire family—myself included—is taking it pretty hard. It’s also, however, bringing up a lot of great memories I have with my dad, including him introducing me to video games way back when I was a little kid.

So what does this have to do with Halo Infinite? My dad’s favorite colors are blue and gold. I don’t really know why, but they always have been and always will be his favorites. Last month, when Halo Infinite’s first technical preview was going on and everyone was going through the customization menus, I remember seeing an armor coating called Estate Gold. I actually sent a screenshot of it to my dad at the time and joked that he was gonna have to start playing video games again to get it.

A lot of people in the Halo community think that armor coatings suck—that they take away a core piece of player expression. I was in that same boat, but now I see a new side of them and disagree. Adding different tiers to coatings makes them feel different. Your color combo might be a coating on a lower level, but that makes it one that can be completely underestimated by your foes. Or it could be high-class, signifying that you’re an impressive sight to behold. Estate Gold is Legendary, just like my dad. I’m going to earn it in Halo Infinite’s first season, and I’m going to wear it throughout the game’s entire lifespan in his honor.

I know I probably won’t change many people’s minds, but I hope this helps show you a new perspective on armor coatings. I’m really excited to grind through Infinite’s battle pass now, whereas before I was simply going to use the Red Shift coating I got from GameStop last year. Thanks for taking the time to hear me out on this.

I am sorry to hear that about your dad.

With that being said, I think you have bigger concerns than the customization and monetization practices of a video game. It would probably best for you to spend some time with him instead of being on these forums. (Not that I wish to silence or suppress your opinion or anything)

That’s okay, I know we’ll somehow get through it.

I had a feeling this would spring up in the thread, so I’ll address it quickly. I can focus on multiple things on my life without taking time away from others. :stuck_out_tongue: I’m working full-time, but I’m also extremely passionate about Halo. Dedicating a couple hours per week to discussing the series with other Halo fans has simply become a habit for me at this point. I will always care for my family and Halo would never stop me from that. I’m just saying I know how to multitask. I genuinely do appreciate your concern, though!

I am sorry to hear about your dad, OP. As for the armor coatings, I also feel that having different rarity armor coatings is a good thing. I typically don’t put too much thought into customization, and once I find something I like, I usually never change it again. I do feel that that will change with armor coatings though, and I will probably want to use color combinations and skins that I never would have considered. I think people really underestimate how many there will end up being, and how varied they can be. The odds of not finding a single armor coating that you really like within the first couple seasons is probably pretty slim, and who knows what cool ones will be coming out down the road.

Very well. I think this was well said.

If you want my two cents, it is not necessarily just the unlocking of armor that makes people upset with coatings, but the limitation in customization. Unlocking special colors while also having the colors you want from the get-go does not need to be mutually exclusive. Someone could start with blue and yellow, but unlock metallic blue and metallic gold. They could also unlock patters, textures, camos, etc. It still provides you with the feeling of unlocking something legendary without it hindering customization. In fact, it will enhance customization.

Best of luck to you and your family.

I don’t think people are against armor coatings in general, but how they are implemented. I haven’t been keeping up with the news, so from last I remember, they are/were one time use that you can/have to pay real money for, like shaders in Destiny 2, before the revamped it (I think, I don’t really follow Destiny 2 either).

OP, sorry about your father’s diagnosis. However, there could be someone in your same situation whose father’s favorite colors happen to be orange and black. It is quite reasonable to expect 343 to lock black and orange (or whatever combo) behind a time- and region-sensitive promotion that costs $20. Tough luck for that kid.

Sorry to hear about your Dad, good post by the way makes me think abit more highly about the coatings.

Ever since halo 2, my colors have always been black and gold. At this point its become apart of me, it reminds me of the days of when I had more time for fun. Although its not a big concern to me, ill still be a little bummed if they never make a black and gold coating.

Also, I wish well for your father and family op.
