New Major FPS Lag and massive stuttering! [SOLVED]

So I played Halo 5 forge (PC) about a 2 weeks ago and I come back on it to host some custom lobbies. When I get into the game it now has massive stuttering and is almost unplayable. When I played it 2 weeks ago it was smooth as ever and had no problems with stuttering or fps drops. I don’t know what updates have changed in the past 2 weeks from windows 10, xbox app, nvidia, or even halo 5 forge pc, but something has caused my game to become unplayable. I turned off game dvr in the xbox app. I’ve even tried bringing down the graphics to minimum and still nothing changes. I honestly think it has something to do with the nvidia update but can’t seem to fix it even changing the options in the control panel. I can still play world of warcraft at pretty decent settings with no problems but for some reason this game just won’t work. If anybody else is having the same issue please let me know how you fixed it. Please help me with my issue!

PC Specs:
GeForce GTX 970
i5-6500 CPU@ 3.20GHZ
16GB RAM

970 or 970M? It’s a big difference as the M is a laptop. There hasn’t been an update to Halo 5: Forge yet, which annoys me… but it sounds like the game is using integrated graphics instead of the 970M if you are on a laptop. Otherwise, maybe another application is causing the issue or a borked NVIDIA driver install. First in NVIDIA control panel set the game to use the GPU instead of integrated graphics. Also, try closing out of everything when you play the game as something else can affect performance, even just a youtube video. If that doesn’t solve it, try doing a “clean” reinstall of the NVIDIA driver (always do clean). First remove the driver with DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller), then do a clean install from GeForce Experience.

Thanks I’m not using a laptop, I’m using a desktop. No, I don’t have anything running when the game is up. In fact when the game is up it’s only using 44% of my CPU and 30% of my memory so my computer is definitely able to handle it. When I check the nvidia control panel the only option I have is my own GPU. It doesn’t even have the integrated graphics option for me. I have reinstalled Nvidia driver and nothing changed. I tested out multiple games to make sure my GPU was still working properly and they all worked. I’m still able to play games like Squad, WoW, fable anniversary, bioshock infinite all at pretty high settings with no problems. It’s just this game for some reason but then again nvidia did just get a few updates since the last time I played it so i’m thinking that that’s what it was or maybe a windows update did it as well so it only affects windows games. I bought Gears of War 4 so I’m going to test that tonight and see how that runs on my PC. If that game is bugging out then that narrows down the problem for me.

Hmm. Well, sorry I am not sure then. You won’t get that integrated option in NVIDIA control panel unless it’s a laptop I think. Anyway, I have a GTX 970 and an i5-4690K with fully updated Windows and NVIDIA driver. Halo 5 runs perfectly fine since it was released, but I know that doesn’t help your situation. Gear of War 4 runs great too, although some settings have to be turned down from ultra to high for a flat 60 FPS at all times, without any small framerate drops. I did try Halo 5 today on a laptop with a 940MX with fully updated Windows and NVIDIA drivers and it runs fine too. But… since we have the same hardware on the desktop just about… I don’t think it’s the NVIDIA driver or I would have the same issue. If it was me, next thing I would try is malware and virus scans with Malwarebytes and AVG Free or Malware bytes and Panda Free. This is a Microsoft game so weird crap can happen that makes the game have issues where other games would not, on top of being a UWP Windows app.

Yea I just ran a scan with virus protection and malwarebytes and nothing came up. Seems like whatever this problem is has to do with something microsoft related, whether it’s the game, the xbox app, or even windows 10. When I play gears of war 4 tonight and if it works perfectly fine. Then i’ll know it’s not the xbox app or windows 10 and i’ll probably just delete the game and reinstall it again and it should work fine. Thanks for all your help.

To help these crashes you can connect the xbox controller cable to the xbox. This only helps the tiny bit of it though

Now the same thing is happening with Gears of War 4…Put down the Gears of War 4 graphics to minimum and it still has no fps increase at all. I wonder whats going on with my xbox app and the games on it.

I don’t know what the issue is…but what I do know is that any game I play from my xbox app just does not work to it’s full potential and it’s making me angry because no matter how many times I google answers for it nothing comes up. Seems like i’m the only person this is happening to. Some setting somewhere is causing my xbox app games to just not work properly.

Solved: Went to control panel and manually uninstalled all the nvidia drivers. Restarted My PC and then went to the GeForce website and reinstalled GeForce experience. Then using GeForce experience to do a clean install and then everything works properly and my computer doesn’t stutter anymore like it used to. Hope this forum helps anybody else fix their problems with stuttering.
