New Halo 5 Armor System

Ok so I originally posted something like this on another topic about wich armors we would want to see return in Halo 5. The topic was no longer active though and I really liked this idea so I’m making a topic about this proposed armor system. Would love to here what your thoughts and what you think Halo 5’s armor system should be like.

Armors in 5 should be earned through Achievements, Commendations and Challenges like in Halo 3. Although Halo: Reach used the credit system to buy the armor once they’d become available in the Armory. I personally found this to be a very time consuming aspect yet also greatly an enjoying one. Halo: Reach had cool armors, some cost alot and weren’t unlocked until late in the game(Security UA/HUL[3]) and that gave you something to keep playing the(really fun arcade halo) game for. You went into Matchmaking and you saw a guy wearing the Gungnir helmet or Security shoulders for the first time and think damn that guy has saved up alot of credits for that awesome armor. Would personally like to see it return is some form, was thinking something like this!

You earn credits through playing any gamemode and get bonuses for completing challenges, credits are not tied to your online ranks, credits are earned through playing the game and you rank up or de-rank depending on how well you perform in ranked playlists. You can play social matchmaking and not worry about losing experience, but you get more credits in ranked playlists. Armors can be tied to rank aswell, for example you reach the highest rank and for that you unlock an achievement and the achievement grants you an armor set or piece. When an armor piece/set has been “available” you can go to your armory and purchase the armor with the credits you’ve earned!

And I would love to see armor accessories return aswell as an an entirely new color selection tool. F.ex. Primary, Secondary, Detail 1, Detail 2 a.s.o…

I also liked Reach’s armor and unlock mode. I hope it returns in some fashion. It would be really nice to get more customization options for our Spartans. That would really make my day lol.

No thank you. Don’t want to grind for gear in a FPS. Especially when that gear has a daily grind limit and a ridiculous amount of days hitting that cap is needed. Reach may have had a decent MM population, but I hated that game with a passion.

this

I like your idea. Halo 4’s armor was too easy to get, I think. I’m thinking of an armor-unlock system more like this:

Recon [Base]
-25,000 cR
-Complete Halo 5: Guardians campaign LASO (Since Recon has usually been a hard-to-get piece of armor, it should have some difficult pre-requisites.)
-Complete 100 Multiplayer Matchmaking games

Or something like that, integrating the cR system with commendations.

Reach’s armor customization was by far my favorite. A variation of it would be nice for Halo 5.

I just want the Halo 3 system back. That way, you had something to wear for your accomplishments. You saw a guy with EOD and you know what he went through to get it. It wasn’t about playing countless hours to unlock them, it was about accomplishing something great in the game to do so. Let’s hope 343i gives us that system again for Halo 5: Guardians.

yea i liked reachs armor system but could get used to having it mixed with how halo 3 had it

I usually find grinding for in-game currency to be an annoying and boring thing, but Halo: Reach managed to make it fun. Really fun. If they can implement that into Halo 5, plus a progression system that will take you absolutely forever to get to the top of, then Halo 5 has the chance to have so much longer of a lifespan by keeping players always working for something.

so basically reachs system lol because it took forever to make it to the max rank lol

Holmes said that the unlock system for customisation is “all-new”. So any of you lot asking for 3/Reach/whatever might be disappointed. :stuck_out_tongue:

im fine if they dont i just dont want a system like in halo 4 where you could get to SR-130 in like a month

I liked Reach’s credits system. It took dedication to earn armour, meaning anyone could get the cool pieces but only if they stuck at it. In other Halos, doing the campaign on legendary solo all skulls on and other ridiculous feats were needed. The trouble with that is, people who aren’t good at Halo (notably me, pre-2010) have literally no chance at getting their favourite armour. Halo 4 also got it wrong, with armour sets needing excessive grinding (Upwards of 300 wins!) in playlists that cycle and may or may not even be present and have very low player counts because they’re so tedious. For example, I never saw a single player with the commando armour which I thought was the best-looking in the game.

The ideal system would be Reach’s, with enough armour constantly becoming available that you always have something to keep you interested, but it takes ages to unlock everything and get the iconic or high-end pieces.

Yeah something like that would be really nice… One thing Reach got really right was the armor and unlock mode

To be honest, it should have a mix of both. A lot of the armor seen in Halo 4/Reach was pretty bland and you were able to get that through ranking up and buying with credits. Although the Hayabusa, Katana, and Recon from Halo 3 were very well worth the achievement grind for and Id love to see similar armor return. Those armor sets made me feel accomplished and well bad a because of all the hard work, Yeah I found all the skulls, yeah I did all those vidmaster challenges etc. I want armor that shows off the work we did to return. Kind of like the MK VI armor in Halo 4 with the Legendary visor. Really good hardworking armor like that need to return, but with that there needs to be armor that’s almost as awesome as those earned through achievements to be earned by playing matchmaking, gaining xp, commendations, ranking up etc. I just the way you unlock it is similar to this. I could go on and on about the way customizing should be but that’s a topic for a different day/thread.

Now that is something I like to hear.

I think a combination of Reach and 3 would be good. Have the majority of armors work on the Reach credit system, but have special sets only unlock able through various achievements/challenges. The more “legendary” variations should be the ones linked to achievements - hard achievements! Stuff like Recon, Commando, Gungnir, Mk. IV, etc. And just to be total jerks, they should make the Mk. VI armor set only unlock able by completing the game SLASO.

A new color customization system would be cool too. Maybe offer a few different primary/secondary color design combinations like in Mass Effect. Similar to what they did in Halo 4 with the sub-variations of armor that just had different paint jobs.

There was no laso in halo 3 for armor/achievement.

Exactly. The would be that armors are grouped in different tiers or something. Like tier 1 you can unlock from the get go but you need credits to do that and the tier 1’s aren’t very expensive. Then the next tiers are more of a challenge since they are made availiable through commendations or achievements. The last tiers is unlocked through Vidmaster challenges or max rank achievements.

I would like to see the attachments of the helmets, chest pieces, etc… unlock through some kind of armour specialization. If you use the Mark VI in 5 matches, you unlock the scarred variant, for example.
