Halo Infinite is going to be using a brand new game engine called “slipspace”, and with a new engine designed specifically for Halo and the power of the next gen consoles, there is so much potential that 343 has. Ever since halo reach, Halo has not had many revolutionary new game modes. However with the sandbox of Halo there is so much creativity developers can take advantage of.
DISCLAIMER: This list isnt meant to be an exact, and is just about general concepts. I understand that there are a lot of balancing issues, but this is just a general idea and does not aim to go into specifics. These game modes are also meant to be for casual/fun play, not competitive.
The Return of “Invasion” from Halo Reach
Breakdown of gamemode:
Invasion mode was first introduced in Halo Reach, and is where Spartans fight Elites over the control of a “core” which is located in the enemy base, which one team must steal and bring back to a certain location in order to win. The attacking team must seal the core whole the defending team must defend it. This game is similar to capture the flag, but what makes it so awesome is the mini objectives and stages that let you progress and unlock new loadout options and vehicles, as well as the Spartan vs Elites vibe.
New ideas for Invasion in Halo Infinite:
- Add in AI that assist your team similar to Titanfall 2, it can be like marines for the Spartan side, and a wide assortment of covenant species like grunts, jackals, etc for the Elites side. As the math gets into its final stages, and AI could also get reinforced with new more powerful varians such as ODST’s for the Spartans or Hunters/Zealots for the Elites.
- Make the Invasion maps larger to give the Invasion mode a sense of larger scale
- Add in more team vehicles like falcons, warthogs, specters, and even transports like phantoms and pelicans
- Bring back classic Invasion maps such as the Spire and Boneyard
- Introduce the target locator and mini glassing beams (covenant version) as final stage limited use weapons
- Introduce AI reinforcement mechanics where you can call down a phantom or pelican to a certain location to deliver AI troops to help you attack or defend a certain location
Beast Mode from Gears of War, but with Halo
Breakdown of gamemode:
Beast Mode was first introduced in Gears of War 3, and is where there is a defending/attacking team, the attacking side (locust, aka the bad guys from the campaign) get to choose from a wide assortment of Gears of War species and get to play as them, as they progress further into the match, they unlock more badass enemies to play as, like Berserkers or those electric centipede things. On the other side, the defending team must try to stay alive and gets to build defences like barricades, turrets and gets friendly AI and mechs to help them.
We already know that it’s possible to play as the covenant, as modders have discovered ways to do it, so why create a proper gamemode around it and polish it up, it would be very unique and could be a selling point for Halo Infinite. The company that creates Gears of War is also tied with microsoft, and they could come give advice to 343 since they are both under Microsoft and are Xbox exclusives.
Proof its possible to play as covenant species:
- Halo 4 - Spartan Massacre by a Grunt<a class=“expando-button toggleImage video collapsedExpando expanded” data-host=“youtube”></a>
- Halo Reach: Playing as Hunter<a class=“expando-button toggleImage video collapsedExpando expanded” data-host=“youtube”></a>
- Halo 4 - Playing as an Elite<a class=“expando-button toggleImage video collapsedExpando expanded” data-host=“youtube”></a>
- Halo Reach - Play as Jackal<a class=“expando-button toggleImage video collapsedExpando expanded” data-host=“youtube”></a>
If modders can discover basic ways to play as different species, just imagine what 343 can do. Lets be honest, you allways thought of what it would be like to play as a cute little grunt, an annoying shielded jackal, or a tanky hunter, with the new slipspace game engine, it can be a reality!
