New Era of Halo

The Campaign Overview emphasized “Welcome to the new era of Halo”. Does anyone find it interesting that they chose the campaign event to state this instead of multiplayer? It seems there might be more to it then just typical marketing and it aligns with the 10 year plan previously stated by 343i. We all are questioning if “Halo’s Campaign is truly worth $60” and people have varied opinions which are valid in their own right. If Halo follows the No Man Sky route this question will change into “Halo’s Campaign is only $60”. That will have to be proven of course.

343i stated that both sides will be a live service however we might be under selling how much content that will be. They needed the Slip Space engine to complete their vision with Halo Infinite. The engine allows them to add and change aspects of the game faster than the previous engine. The graphics look great in the new reveal however they are not to the standard of Halo 4 and Halo 5 in terms of how well they looked on Xbox 360 and Xbox One. The scope is much larger and the sandbox is tremendously larger so it is understandable.

The scope 343i has for the campaign could be far greater than we currently assume. The graphics would help them release content much faster than previously before while having a previously planned narrative direction. Halo has been released every 3 years until Infinite however that entailed graphical and platform changes. The in-engine cutscene direction would dramatically help the release schedules as well. The campaign is a live service after all.

It truly seems like the New Era of Halo may be the best era yet especially if they can release content much faster than ever before while having it be high quality. If 343i can drop yearly campaign missions this would mean a more consistent player base all across the game which would dramatically help the population fall off from the past. We all love Halo and this might be the best way going forward in the modern day of gaming.

What are your thoughts?

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: If 343 is anything, they’re ambitious. They’ve been like this since Halo 4. Despite my, and many other’s, opinions of that game, the story they wanted to tell and the direction they wanted to bring the game was very different (and in the case of campaign, exiting). The Didact, if done right would have been awesome. At the time I gave 343 the benefit of the doubt because they were the new kid on the block, and frankly, they were just doing what Reach was doing. But I digress.

Halo 5, while the bane of my existence, was also ambitious. Turning Cortana, a trusted ally, into a new villain was… thought provoking (emphasis on “provoking”). Warzone was the biggest and most complex game mode ever in a halo title, and Halo 5 was the first game to really try to lean into the extended lore. All of this sucked, but you can’t say they didn’t try. Also the MP was smooth as hell. I don’t think I ever had a lag spike. And Forge. H5 forge kicks the collective -Yoinks!- of all the other forges and it’s not even close.
Edit: Except Reach’s Forge World. FW is still the best canvas.

And here we are at Infinite. A game with the graphical strengths of H5 and the art direction of H3 and Reach. It has Reach levels of customization. The MP looks to have learned from the mistakes of 4-5, and the campaign seeks to finish what ODST started, and be the largest and most open campaign to date. Finally, the story seems to be on par with CE.

In general, the potential for this game is insane. Because it’s open world, enemy encounters can be re-experienced in many ways. Now we can explore a large world, but (hopefully) still have more linear/scripted encounters and mission closer to what Halo has traditionally done. What’s more, if there’s DLC down the line, those new mission don’t have to take place on Zeta Halo. There’s nothing stoping them from sending us to a new planet or fighting on a ship or whatever. I want some mission that fleshes out those cardboard cutouts they called “characters” from Halo 5. New guns may get added, and maybe even entire mission or bosses could be built around the unique quirks of certain weapons and vehicles. I’m excited to see what they can do.

The potential is incredible like you mentioned. The DLC will be the most interesting because of the potential for it to be added. They could release missions of the past with Blue Team and other areas to fix the lore disconnect as well.

From what I have seen in the Halo Infinite campaign overview, this is the start of the new era of Halo. There is definitely a lot of stories they can tell in Halo Infinite especially since the Zeta Halo Ring will be a very big area.

At the same time, there is also a lot of locations of the Zeta Halo Ring that can be explored in the Halo Infinite story expansions and the Halo Infinite DLC campaign levels. Just imagine how cool would it be to see Arbiter getting his own DLC campaign levels in Halo Infinite. The Arbiter DLC campaign levels can be set after Halo 5: Guardians and during Halo Infinite.

Here is another one that is very exciting. It looks like Halo Infinite will be the start of the next 10 years plan for Halo. 343 Industries can use the next 10 years plan for Halo to build up to a story where we can finally see Jerome-092 meet Master Chief and Arbiter. Not only that, the Halo Infinite campaign overview shows Atriox appearing as a hologram. This shows that 343 Industries might have a plan to bring characters from the Halo Wars video games to the Halo Infinite main storylines.

I would love to do the Shadows of Reach mission or even the suicide Spartan III mission. So many great narrative tales within the universe that haven’t been touched. Staten with the power he has with 343i will make the most out of stories since he specifically is a writer himself.

I’m not sure how it’ll work with the campaign plan, it depends on how inclusive they have multiplayer tie into it IE stuff like Spartan ops or campaign matchmaking. Player retention wise, it’ll be pretty important because over time if it’s just SP, there’s going to be a drop off, dlcs never sell as much as the original game itself. Content drought is also something to think about because you end up with disgruntled players when content is put out fast enough to sate them and let’s be honest, gamers are always hungry and impatient for more content.

there’s still a ton of questions as to what their plans are for infinite post launch. I just don’t imagine it being this ten year plan for one game because no ones made it happen, it’s just to much work. Anthem was dead on arrival so it never got to try, and destiny already had a sequel because of engine limitations to trying to confine everything to one game. Infinite is already having to cater to older hardware and that’s where I believe it’s limitations will be in the long run.

Older hardware will undoubtedly be cut off at a certain point (probably 3 years). GamePass providing “free” DLC would remove a large barrier while keeping a strong base in terms of population. Having a four seasons per year schedule for multiplayer while having a large campaign add about every year would keep people attached.

What other game has followed this model while being a flagship AAA title? Halo campaigns are one of the most replayable campaigns in the industry. You mention Anthem which never had a foundation nor a decent size fan base so I would state that comparison isn’t compatible. Destiny 2 has had a great fanbase for a long period of time even with the tons of issues it inflicts onto itself (including actual funding). Halo Infinite seems like it was built specifically for the live service model. In-engine cutscenes and a whole new engine are a great indicator of that.

It may not truly be a ten year play however I see it being at least 6+ years. They need to establish a new fan base and that takes time. Halo can truly create a Star Wars like universe with it’s lore. The problem is people don’t want to read books which is understandable. The way around that is creating a canvas and building it. That is what it seems like 343i is trying to do with Halo Infinite.

Joseph Staten really need to come back to do more Halo video games especially if 343 Industries want to move forward with the Halo spin off video games. I can see Joseph Staten becoming like Kevin Feige, Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni where he will be in charge of the Halo video games, while at the same time he will communicate with the Halo fans including listening to their feedback.

I really hope so. Halo has the potential to be such a masterpiece in terms of story telling with it’s universe. The problem is the delivery in the games and the format of which it is presented. They need to start adding a lot of lore from the books in the game since so much exists.

They have been adding lore, but they keep doing it so poorly (Librarian cutscene), that nobody likes them.

I just see Infinite like Bungies Reach. Going from Halo 3 to Reach felt like a downgrade in graphics, but gameplay and scale were awesome. If this is a similar case, Infinite still looks really good in my opinion.

Personally I’m excited by the prospect of more consistently arriving campaign content.

That said, I’m concerned about what it will do to the narrative ark and the decisions they make for including characters etc in the game.

It seems weird to be coming into what was once the third game in the “reclaimer” trilogy, and feeling like there is no end in sight. I no longer have any sense of stakes or finality, since its clear that they will milk it forever. I’m concerned that we won’t see the story moving along all that much, and we’ll just get a cliffhanger to promote the next campaign.

It also seems like they feel that being a live service excuses them from providing a complete experience at launch? In particular, it seems like we won’t get a variety of biomes or characters, and this entire game will just serve as a teaser for what else might come later. The exclusion of classic weapons like the shotgun seems to me like an obvious omission so that the real shotgun can be added in later.

With all these concerns, and the hugely cheesy trailer we just got, I’m very worried about the future of Halo.

What?

Reach is a considerable upgrade both visually and technically.

I think they mean the lighting engine. While reach is the better graphical game, 3’s art style tends to hold up better IMO.

I wouldn’t assume they see it being an excuse. Hard calls have the be made sometimes in development. I feel like what you stated is a very strong assumption with no actual probable truth behind it. I understand where it comes from however this game like I stated seems like it was made from the ground up to be live service.

When making these games it takes a hot minute to make the framework since you are creating the canvas for everything to come in the future. It seems planned to me however Forge and Co-op got caught up with problems with development.

Why wouldn’t the story move along? They are not going to milk the story because people will just playing it. They can’t afford to follow this assumption.
