So I’ve been following how the CSR works on Halo 5 since release and I see lots of posts about this. So I figured I would explain what I have learnt and how the CSR really works now (it’s different than how the pre season ranks worked).
All everyone knows is you go up for a win and down for a loss. That’s really only half of it.
I will explain this new ranking system and use comparisons to the old for reference.
I just played all my Jan season 10 Slayer placement matches with the same fireteam. One got Onyx, one for Diamond and me and another guy got Platinum. Now I understand why and I’ll try and explain.
Our first game was against an already ranked Diamond team. We won that, even though it was a sweaty match, the game figured we were half decent then for the next 3 matches we played against full Onyx teams. We lost, but the guy who ranked Onyx still went positive in every game.
The placement games have always used everything to get your closest CSR. So KD plays a big role and it used to only matter in the first 10 matches. Now it matters in all games.
Previously a win after the placement game meant a rise of around 30% a loss was also around 30% It could have been a bit lower or bit higher, judging the ranks of the enemy team. But it would only be a variance of 5% either way. KD didn’t play a role in your ranks after the placement games in pre season.
However it does now. I had a win last night, but just went negative and got carried a bit, my rank increased by 11%
The game after that was also a win, I went 18-6 and rose 33%
This is also a good thing. If someone quits on your team and you lose, you go down BUT it’s only a very small percentage. Also if you play an Onyx team and are ranked say platinum, then lose you will only go down around 15% (around that anyway). However if you win that your rank can increase by as much as 40% (which I believe is the most you can rank up in 1 game)
343 have really tweaked the CSR for this season, I think so far it’s really good, you will be in the rank closest to what your skill is. I hope this helps and if your wondering how to track your progress\percentage in each game, I use Halotracker.
You’re right, that’s why i think the ranks are actually really good. You will end up where you really should be, no amount of butt hurt will change that.
Personally on a good day I’m Diamond, but on a bad day I’m Platinum. My ranks reflect that.
I would love to be an Onyx player, but right now I need to do a few more things to be in that league. I know I’m not as a play with\against Onyx friends. There is a big jump between each rank division.
I love how this post gets so little attention. Yet, the second someone says “ranks suck because 1-50 is better” people flock to it. Thought I noticed something different the past couple of days. A nice remedy to the quitting problem as well. Lost by one kill in sudden death in a 2v3 today, so it’s nice to know that ranks don’t go down as much when that happens.

It’s just the community dude. People love to winge, I’ve noticed as I only post positive stuff cause I really like Halo. Ends up getting very little attention.
Also I think people are finding out they aren’t as good as they think they are. That causes people to be real defensive and angry. Put that aside and go into the game a bit more humble and I find you play HEAPS better.
I should also add, this data is only from me personally, so if people have other figures or starts to share that would be good. Im not solid on the new rank percentages as they seem to be heaps more variable on different things now, than what they used to be. Working out exactly what affects what and the percentage will be really helpful for everyone going into the following seasons.
Im really glad people who keep playing when someone quits out don’t get punished so hard.
