New Assassinations in Halo 4

Before we begin, I’m going to make some assumptions:

[/li]- People like assassinations.

  • People want assassinations in Halo 4; ergo, they’re going to be in Halo 4.
  • Assassinations work fine the way they are implemented in Reach (you are at risk when you do an assassination as opposed to a beat down, you can be yoinked, showstopped, etc.)

Ready? OK.

MORE is the key word here. Halo 4 needs MORE assassinations. More as in more variety. Don’t get me wrong, Reach had amazing assassination diversity, but still. Give us some new ones. And you guys reading this thread, feel free to describe a fun assassination you’d like to see in Halo 4.

More, different assassinations is not limited to multiplayer, by the way. Campaign assassinations need some love too. Right now, other than Elites, Covenant assassinations aren’t as varied. You can only assassinate Grunts one of two ways, and Skirmishers, Jackals, and Brutes only have one assassination animation. Hunters (and Engineers and Drones, but how you’d assassinate them or why’d you’d bother is a mystery) can’t be assassinated at all.

This is a tragedy. Well, not a tragedy, but assassinations in the Campaign aren’t living up to their potential. And let’s not forget, the Flood will probably be in Halo 4. I don’t know if assassinating the Flood is workable, but it’s something to consider.

So, now that we’re agreed on this (we are agreed on this, aren’t we?), I’d like to propose an assassination to be in Halo 4:

The Hunter assassination

I want to assassinate a Hunter so bad. It haunts my dreams. I can’t sleep. I can’t eat. I don’t want to eat. All I want to do is assassinate a Hunter. Please, help me.

NOW, if we’re going to assassinate a Hunter in Halo 4 (and I know you guys want to as well), we’ve got to work at it. It can’t be a simple matter of slipping behind them and holding RB. This is how it’ll go down:

[/li]- You see Hunter 1 and Hunter 2. They see you.

  • They recite war poetry. You -Yoink!- the ground.
  • It’s on.
  • You knock off Hunter 1’s back plate with your shotgun (or whatever you’ve got with you)
  • Hunter 1 charges you. You dodge, and slip behind Hunter 1.
  • You have in your inventory at least 1 grenade.
  • Hold RB
  • You clamber up onto Hunter 1’s back, pull the pin, and…
  • Hunter 2 smacks you off and you die.
  • You respawn.
  • This time you do it right, no messing around. You kill Hunter 1.
  • Hunter 2’s dead already, he just don’t know it yet.
  • Do the same thing you did to get at Hunter 1.
  • Shove the 'nade into Hunter 2’s back, jump off (backflips are optional) and take out your umbrella, 'cause it’s raining worms tonight.

A different scenario could be that instead of shoving a nade into the Hunter, you just slice off the head with your combat knife. Still, I hope you got the drift. It shouldn’t be easy. It should be totally worth the effort.

It’s your guys’ turn. If you’ve got an assassination you’d like to see in Halo 4, write 'er down. But, make sure it’s not incredibly easy or impossible to implement. Make it balanced. Make it beautiful.

Wow, this gave me a good laugh.

Anyway, I’m pretty much in the same camp as you. I LOVE assassinations, and even after a year I still feel a thrill when I shank a knife into someone. Hunters or not, Flood or not, I just want to assassinate, and I want MOAR!!!

I like you already. Good ideas you got going on here, especially that hunter assassination method. Grunt (all Covenant for that matter) assassinations are so boring and limited that I have no incentive to actually perform them.

As far as Spartan assassinations, I’d like one where you dig your combat knife far into the Spartan’s back, you lift him with the knife in his back and smash him into the ground as a finale. There could also be an assassination where you pierce your opponent multiple times (this one could work for other enemies in H4). Oh and one where you turn the Spartan around and stab him in his visor, leaving a huge hole in it.

There are endless possibilities for amazing assassinations, hopefully Halo 4 has an extensive amount of them.

Those are some cool assassinations you’ve described. I especially like the first one (“you dig your combat knife far into the Spartan’s back, you lift him with the knife in his back and smash him into the ground as a finale”). It would be sort of like a tackle; you’re running, you shove the knife in his back, and just pile drive him into the ground. Sounds awesome.

I love that, maybe an assasination that’'s not multiple stabs, but slashes, with a finale across the neck.

And the dead dude does a slow spin (like when you got sniped in CE) and plops on the ground. Sounds great.

Oh, and since we might be facing some new enemies in Halo 4, I can’t wait to see if we can assassinate them, too!

If the Flood is in H4, I don’t think we should be able to assassinate them.

Yes, this thread is old. I regret nothing.

nothing!

IF there is flood i think you should be able to assassinate them if their health is low and its where you tackle one and just start ripping it apart starting with the arms.

I’d like them to let you choose your assassinations. Some of the ones in Reach make me cringe. Me? I’d like to have less over the top, more stealthy looking assassinations.

I think it would be cool to choose your assassinations in the options menu.

1st Assassination:You see two enemies but they can’t see you so you sneak up behind and take out your knife. You use you hand to take one down by grabbing their helmet and slamming him into the ground. You turn around and shove a knife helmet, punch him in the stomache, then kick him to the ground.Hold B and A down the whole time or they will have the advantage of killing you

2nd Assassination:You see an enemy in front you and if you make one step he will you take out your sniper rife and run up behind and choke with the sniper, you stop choking him he falls on his knees and you shoot him in the head.Hold B and at the end RT down.

I don’t think quick time events would fit into a game like Halo.

I agree but these are sneaky assassination you can only do when there no other enemies around.

I don’t think quick time events fit into any game.

That just sounds “too” Mortal Kombat-ish to me. I like 'em simple and less “exaggerated”.

Also, while it would be awesome, it would be semi-impossible to assassinate a Hunter. it’s a collection of hundreds of eel-like creatures in that armor. Hence the point of wearing it down. And i don’t want Halo turning into a God of War QTE fiasco. Which I loved but let’s keep 'em separate.

Agreed 100%.

I agree and I really hope assassinations are in Halo 4! Speaking of ‘campain assassinations’ did any of you guys see the cool ones Bungie was playing around with for Reach? I saw one where a player could hijack onto a Hunters back, punch through their armor and place a grenade (kind of how you can do it to enemy tanks)…guess thats not really an assassination but still it was awesome. Maybe in Halo 4 they could have ‘weapon-specific’ assassinations, not for just the sword. Guess we’ll just have to wait and see

Hunter:
“I’ve been hunting and fishing in these parts for years.”
“A little poaching isn’t going hurt anyone. The Jarl can’t eat all the deer can he?”

Here’s what I think…

For large enemies such as the Hunter, I think your should be able to destroy a certain spot (like the back plate of a Hunter) and it would allow you to board it, then you can proceed to melee or plant a grenade.

For assassination themselves, there can be a few ways to vary it up.

  • Purchasable set: If a system like credits return to buy customizations, let there be a few sets of assassination, each one having a certain style or finesse to them, varying from flashy, stealthy, brutal, etc. It may be easier to program then my next suggestion.

  • Assassination slots: For those that know all about assassination, there is one for being right behind an enemy, behind to the right, behind to the left, air-to-air, and one from above. Just like how you select the armor for your Spartan, there could be a similar option for these assassination positions. You can purchase and place your assassination animations where you want for what suits you or just for what you think looks cool.

  • Weapon specific assassination: For those that have assassinated with the sword know that it has it’s own animations. Well all weapons could have there own animations as well, possibly about 3 a piece so you aren’t doing the same one over and over if you favor a weapon. Something like the pistol could have one where you drop an enemy to their knees, put the pistol to their head and BAM, of course not using ammo since it’s just for show. Aside from looking cool, it could also be useful in various machinima series. Possibly these animations could also be changed and purchased as well.

Oh, almost forgot to say. For the love of God, keep quick time events out of Halo. Quick time events aren’t gameplay and for the most part are terrible, especially if you just bring it up out of no where for one little thing.
