I just bought a armor piece and afterwards it opened up the possibility to buy the same thing but it has a [R] after it. What is the difference in this other variant i can buy? because with my comparison it seems to be no different.

Yep - It’s the same chest piece that also gives you a robotic arm. Take another look and you’ll see it.

There are three chest pieces with robotic arms which are unlocked by reaching a certain rank and buying the first permutation without the robot arm.
“Sapper [R]” is unlocked at Commander Rank
“Breacher [R]” is unlocked at Colonel Rank
“Parafoil [R]” is also unlocked at Colonel Rank
