New Achievement: Tank Doesn't Beat Everything

With the recent news of 343 removing the “Tank Gun Glitch” from campaign I wanted to propose a better solution than just removing it.

From my understanding, it seems that they want to keep the integrity of the “LASO” Achievement intact, which is respectable, but they can’t. It’s already been compromised. Players have already used the tank gun to beat LASO, others have not. And some have chosen not to use the tank gun despite knowing about it. But ultimately, looking at someone’s gamerscore would not tell you the difference.

Removing the glitch after the fact fixes nothing. Which is why we need a new achievement:

“Tank Doesn’t Beat Everything” - Complete a LASO campaign without using the tank gun glitch.

Anyone who has this achievement will be recognized as having beat LASO fairly, but people who just want to have fun and record cool clips can still use the tank gun.

Other options are to return the tank gun as a skull just like H2s Scarab Gun and make it non-scoring so you can’t get achievements while it’s active. Or they could code it so the gun is replaced with a sidekick whenever the player enters a main mission area (ex: Conservatory).

I love the name choice for the achievement. Why people think that the tank gun should be removed is a mystery to me seeing how its presence has no negative impact on the game. If you don’t want it, don’t grab it.

A non-tank gun LASO achievement makes a lot of sense especially if it stacks with Headmaster so only one LASO run is required when done the harder way. I’ve tracked achievement trends for a while now and I’m willing to bet that the large majority of players that will ever unlock Headmaster already have it so that horse is out the barn and miles away. Removing the gun now will only affect only the relatively smaller number of players that earn it in the months and years to come. Plus a new achievement would show 343 owning their mistake instead of erasing it. In Halo CE, Bungie did not anticipate players exploiting the indestructability of unoccupied vehicles to steal Banshees. But once discovered they didn’t patch it out saying “No, you have fun the way we tell you to have fun.”

For the record, I started with the tank gun in my LASO run. I unintentionally exchanged it in “Pelican Down” but kept going. And losing it wasn’t that impactful. The M41 Spnkr and especially the M41 Tracker did a fine job and I completed the run. If people are really concerned about the “integrity” of LASO, get rid of Bandana. The tank gun pales in comparison to how that skull impacts the game.

Actually yeah that’d be a pretty cute achievement title. Wholly support this.

@SaltyBunny20567

Thanks. It would be the only achievement you can’t cheese with the tank gun, so it quite literally can’t beat everything.

@Gilbert_Prime

Exactly. If this was something that was such a big deal, it should have been removed in the 1st week or month. And it was never addressed in their end of week updates nothing. If I had to guess, its removal was likely a side effect of adding co-op. But if that’s the case, they need to just say that so people can have some closure.

This seems to be a really common problem with 343 lately. I probably wouldn’t be as fed up with them if they provided their rationale for their changes to the game instead of saying effectively “we changed xyz because we did. Live with it.”

To be fair, it’s their game, that’s their right.

The tank cannon was never intended, where the scarab gun was. This just wasn’t something they ever wanted to be an aspect.

So, I get it.

LASO is still easier than easy without the tank gun, so sure. I’m still a little peeved that I have not 100% this game yet due to Elimination not being added to the game yet. Let’s do a trade. Take out “Medic” for “Tank Doesn’t beat Everything”

They’ll be adding that to the game proper in Season 2 plus making it achievable in custom games… Probably because they realized how utterly ludicrous that one was to achieve.

I imagine more people have LASO than have that.

I mean yeah it is their game and they are not obligated to tell us anything and in the end have the final say in what happens to the game at the end of the day, but we the player base are the ones that they aim to please so we continue to play. I feel we should get some explanation to why they are doing what they are to the game.

Indeed, but as an artist and writer myself, sometimes we need to step back and let them have their vision. If we don’t like it we can always leave.

Whatever the case may be, the tank gun isn’t even the key to LASO so it isn’t important. The Pelican, now that’s the real key.

Honestly, even without the tank gun LASO is still not particularly difficult in Infinite given the Bandana skull. You can get rockets very quickly into the campaign and those aren’t much of a downgrade from the tank gun.

I love this line from the Halo 3, I was actually just playing that mission a couple of hours ago! Back on topic though, I’ve known about the ‘Tank gun’ practically since the game came out, but I refuse to use it simply on principle. However, I think it’s definitely an awesome addition to the game and would be sad to see it go. The ideas you listed are all great, but another solution would be to disable the gun if skulls are active.

Solution, strip everyone of the LASO achievement.

It’s only fair.

( Regardless if you got it without the tank gun or not, YES, strip it from all players. )

  1. It would be easier for 343 to do this vs having to rework the coding to filter out who got it the “ Original “ way intended or not.

  2. If not, don’t remove the gun and call it a glitch if you didn’t bother setting “ rules “ / disabling achievements when enabling / equipping the tank gun because you chose to rush through development and not bother to polish the game @343.

  • Those who think stripping the achievement from everyone is bad, fail to see the replay value and rather argue that its “ unfair “ to those who did the right way, but the ones who did earn the LASO achievement the right way are arguing that it was unfair that people exploited the tank gun achievement to get ( NOT EARN ) the LASO achievement.

343 Industries really cornered themselves and exposed how the developed the game when announcing that they would remove the tank gun.

Those who are saying, 343 should add it as a easter egg weapon like the scarab gun making it harder to get, fail to comprehend how easy the grapple hook makes the game.

Those who say, add the gun as a Skull “ perk “ fail to comprehend the “ Strip the LASO achievement from everyone argument.

I see your arguments or complaints on what Im saying, 343 Industries does too, but when you really think about it, then you see that 343 really shot themselves in the foot with this announcement.

  • Second edit…

Re-read what Ive said ; No where did I say the player base is to blame.

If so, please point out where.

The blame falls on 343 Industries wanting to “ FIX “ what isn’t an issue in the game, but 343 Industries recognizes that this “ FIX “ has posed alot of issues when it comes to a balanced gameplay experience going forward with future updates… Updates that NO PLAYER has any idea of what that content may consist of.

Long term wise, YES, the Tank gun would be game breaking for something they want the player base to experience as a challenge vs PAST Halo titles where Bungie didn’t have the tools or bother to go back and fix certain game breaking bugs ; Bungie left them in cause they seen the player base use the “ Exploits “ has a “ fun mechanic “.

The tank gun when compared to the Scarab gun is more OP.
The scarab gun couldn’t “ Speedrun “ you the the entire game and you were at risk with killing yourself with it.

The Tank gun doesnt function like the scarab gun with its “ Bloom “ effect and is way more accurate.

Them removing it has to do with “ Potential “ DLC updates later on.

The grapple hook alone is far more OP in the campaign vs multiplayer and you could use the fully maxed out grapple hook to kill any “ BOSS “ in a matter of seconds - minutes on WHATEVER difficulty.

Again, THE PLAYER BASE IS NOT TO BLAME to the the one claiming I am blaming the player base.

The removal of the tank gun is pointless, but if you remove something that players have used to break the game for an achievement that is deemed as on of the top Challenging achievements in any game series, then it is only fair to strip that achievement from all players, resetting that “ progress bar “, ESPECIALLY since the MCC has a leader board for speed running and for some coding and engine limiting reason Halo Infinite doesnt ; This here is why I say “ Remove the achievement from all players, “

If you think that is punishing, then you clearly haven’t seen what bungie has done to punish players back in H2 and H3 prime days for the use of exploits not intended for the game, let alone what other gaming developers have done to reset the progress bar for there player bases.

I’ve said in other posts that maintaining the glitch has the possibility of creating problems down the road due to the inherent issues that come with the unintentional actions of the coding that enables it in the first place.

A better solution is to remove it, code it properly and intentionally, and reintroduce it in a stable manner. This could also allow for better integration within the game to disable achievements and challenge completion for higher difficulties which this primarily allows users to circumvent for easy acquisition.

I want the Skull still.
Would be utterly hilarious to fire the Heatwave and see how it interacts with the explosive trait.

I’m actually genuinely curious what is going to happen to all the people that are currently carrying the tank gun, when the tank gun is patched. Will they just have no weapon, or will their save file be corrupted? I mean, if the only weapon they have is the tank gun, if 343 removes the tank gun, they have zero weapons. Are there even animations for having no weapons? I wonder if 343 is smart enough to give them an AR or something in exchange.

So make people who already got it (tank gun or not) have to get it again?

In my opinion, there’s really no point in removing it at all. LASO is really not that hard when you think about it. Without the tank gun, all you need is thruster with active camo, spam that thruster, a rocket launcher or energy sword, and grenades. The bandana skull already makes it way easier than past Halos without the bandana skull. They might as well just leave it alone. But we can’t have fun in this game I guess.

This would make so much sense as a Title Update achievement
