Never played MP, Is there a way to learn the maps?

I’ve played every Campaign of every Halo game but never played multiplayer. I’m just an average player, I play through on normal and then Heroic but no way can I play Legendary. I think I do pretty good for being over 60. Is there some way for a complete noob to learn the maps without being a human shield for other players? Ideally I’d like to be able to move around the maps and learn them with nobody else to begin with but I doubt that the maps are designed for new people who are slightly intimidated by the idea of MP.
I saw a message on the XB1 about unranked casual games which I guess is what I want but how do you get to them?
Thanks

go to forge or start a custom game and just run around

I was going to say custom games are your best bet. Try to get in one with somebody who knows the ins and outs of them, as well as the callouts.

i’d use forge because you can get all the weapon spawns down for all gametypes at once, and you can fly around very fast.

If you don’t mind dying at first, jump into team slayer. As you start to get ranked you’ll both learn the maps and start playing people on your skill level.

You could always load up customs and go around them yourself to learn the basic layout and weapon spawns.
Check out different routes that you think you can do, like sprint > Jump towards Edge > Clamber up for instance. Or Thrust to change direction and so forth.

However, to learn how the maps actually play while they’re in use, you do need to go into multiplayer, or find a custom games team to play with who you can practice with if you’re intimidated at first to go in where the monsters live, I mean, where we randoms play.

Forge might work too, or youtube, or watch streamers. Then again, the two latter won’t give you the hands on experience, and you won’t learn by doing, they’ll however show you a little which routes players do generally take and where they do tend to end up.

Other than that, you just need to buckle up, take a deep breath and go for it. Nothing ventured nothing gained.

Like people have been suggesting, going into a custom game by yourself is a great way to learn the maps, without the stress of competition. Your first few games could very well turn out to be a nightmare, but don’t let that discourage you… it takes time to learn the do’s and don’t’s of multiplayer. The best way to learn is to jump headlong into a few battles!

Whenever I want to learn a map, especially if it’s a new map, I just load up a custom game and run around solo or with friends (usually not killing each other) and just learn the weapon spawns, vehicles (if applicable), armour abilities, and just efficient routes/maneuvers. Not a bad way to figure things out/test out jumps, and the plus is there’s no one shooting at you :stuck_out_tongue:

Firstly, I am glad to see an over 60 gamer. That is really cool.
Secondly, as everyone previous has stated, to learn maps check out forge or make a custom game. To learn how the play is different than campaign, you have to jump in.

My advice when you jump in, pick a teammate to follow. Just run behind them and assist as much as you can. You may take a couple kills and you may protect them sometimes. Also if you see a power weapon laying on the ground, don’t be afraid to pick it up. It is better in the hands of a noob on your team than in the hands of anyone on the other team. Plus the only way you will get good with them in MP is using them. (I used to leave snipers alone because I wasn’t that good with them and wanted my teammates with good k/d to have them, but once I started picking them up my k/d went up too)

Also have a mic and talk with your team. Even if you lose an engagement you can pass information to your team even if you don’t know the accepted area callouts. “There are two enemies at my X” (There is an X where teammates die)

Don’t get discouraged if/when you don’t do well at first. There is a learning curve. I would also recommend playing BTB or warzone. Also when in game find a teammate to tag along with. Always stay out of the middle of the maps. Period.

Just go into a custom game and run around.

Thanks for all of the replies guys I really appreciate it. I think I’ll load up a few custom games and “run around by myself” to learn the maps and spawns and then just go for it. Being a noob is bad enough but if I at least know the maps beforehand I can concentrate on playing and actually contributing. BTW I will always pick up a sniper rifle. I’m really pretty good with it and with driving but I’ve heard driving a vehicle in MP isn’t very useful in H5…
Thanks

This and jump in to an unranked match and have a raz

I would just jump straight in and learn yourself, you will eventually find the right patterns and ways around the map. its like any new game, i find people telling you what to do sometimes will make it annoying to learn. you will find a play style that suits you easier if you play online yourself

I reccomend observing the maps and spawning in custom games or in forge first, then once you get used to them, practice against some friends in custom games for a few days or however long you feel is enough time. After doing this you should do decent in matchmaking. Also reccomend you challenge yourself to beat that Legendary campaign. Do it co op if it’s to tough for you at first.

Custom or forge but best to stay in the Spartan mode and say callouts out load as you explore the different areas. That should help you with memorizing the call outs. You can also check out some YouTube videos to learn the sneaky and parkor routes and tricks. I recommend practicing those jumps and trick outside of MP matches also might want to learn and practice the spring jump while your at it.

I had no idea these jumps were around! I couldn’t even jump to the stupid pillar in Mission 8 to get the Mythic skull before. On YouTube people are jumping three times further than I ever could with them. This is great. It really helps a lot.
Thanks.

Custom games, YouTube map walkthrough and gsmeplay, forge that stuff

Go in forge and look around. Every little platform and ledge is there for a reason. The maps are so thought out and precisely made its pretty awesome. While every map is very interesting in verticality, some are better then others.

Hi. I’m also over 60 and been playing Halo for some time. Just recently ranked Bronze 2 in slayer just to qualify for the banner. But now I’ll be using lots of tips I’ve read in this thread to keep ranking up. I’ve finished lots of missions of MCC and Halo 5 on Legendary and gotten most of the achievements. I Google for information on everything, get tips looking at speed runs and par time videos and it helped me a lot. Once I get a better internet connection, I’ll be adding you as a friend and be happy to do the Legendary Co-op missions with you. BTW, I’m from Puerto Rico.
