Halo Wars 2 on start throws the following error to me:
Network Error - Error downloading data - An error occurred while downloading the latest game configuration data. Online features may be restricted. Do you want to retry?
This error was not present to me during last weekend, only happened this week. Last sunday the game was running ok. The issue is here now for like 3-4 days.
Saying yes will achieve nothing and the same error comes up. Saying no will return me to the default ‘Press any key to continue’ page, which then ignores any key to continue. Now, if i select change profile and reselect my own, i’m able to pass through the starting screen and access the menu items. Single Player works fine, i have access to my save files, etc. However, multiplayer does not work. I cannot find any lobby and not a single online mode works for me (blitz, firefight, deathmatch)
I had a quite pleasant hour and a half chat with xbox support regarding this issue, with no success. I have reinstalled the game, restarted my PC then installed it back up multiple times. I’m running the game through the xbox app, which also has no issues with connectivity. Halo Wars 1 DE runs fine, i was able to play multiplayer there.

Intel Core i7-6700K CPU @ 4.00 GHz (8 CPUs)
32GB ram
DirectX 12

Halo Wars 2 have been added to my firewall as allowing apps to communicate through it. I tried turning it off then running it also, with no success.
I have the exact same problem since day one. still no fix for me. I have tried uninstalling my anti-virus program alltogether with no progress. I really want this fixed soon…
Read somewhere in these forums that a definitive edition owner had to uninstall HW1+HW2 then reinstall in safe mode to get his game working but i cant recall if the issue was a network error or a crash on start up thing.
hmm then, i dont know. I buy this game for playing, i´m not curious for change every settings in PC, other games runs perfectly without problem and this?! No words…
Why i should change my firewall, run game in safe mode, change registry for playing, reset settings store, run 2 stupid aplication…etc? This is not how i imagine AAA game.

I’m having the exact same error but since release. I can only play singleplayer, multiplayer won’t find anything. This error is driving me nuts… I’ve reinstalled the game 3 times and checked firewall settings. NAT is “open” and every other “play anywhere” game is working. I just hope that the next patch will fix it somehow.

Bought it in the official store, so that one cannot be the error
I have also happened times, which can happen when the game patch in game is not correct and the game is not synchronized. In windows 10 you have to go to: Settings / System / Apps and go to Halo wars 2. There you can: Select advanced options. Select Reset.
Now you have to go into the game and reinstall the game patch.
Should work now.

For information: After an uninstallation the cache folder is preserved, which you have to reset / delete.

Tried it and didn’t work. It’s so stupid, the first time the game tries to download the newest configuration but fails. After that you can press “retry” again and again but it won’t even try to connect for a single second, like there aren’t any servers. It’s so frustrating… And it looks like only a few have this problem. I blame it on the windows store, 'cuz I guess it messed something up but no one knows what. Had not a single time where the game connects…

Its a W10 related bug so far. Never heard about a XBONE with this error

On PC, i can’t play any games mode since that 2/22 patch, it worked like a charm before during early access.
It’s not on our end, i tried everything i could think would worked.
I7 6700k GTX 970 4 go, 16gb ram, game is installed on C:/ on a Samsung m.2 ssd 1TO. And my internet is super fast.
Nat is open etc…

If you stuck on " press any button "screen with this error ,you just need to click on your account name in the down right corner ,after this you’ll get pass through this screen and will be able to play campaign or skirmish

Yes i know, but whatever game mode i launch, it’s black screen then crash to desktop just before thé loading screen’s ends FML
