Need to reinstall MCC every time I boot my pc

Since the last couple of days, every time I start my computer I need to reinstall Halo MCC cause it won’t launch. In the Microsoft store it says: This app encountered a problem. Please reinstall it to repair. I have Xbox game pass on pc, hopefully it’s still in beta so it’s less expensive but god it’s such a crappy app. It never worked fine. Almost every time there is an update to a game it tries to update but crash and I need to download the whole game again. Now every day I try to launch halo MCC I need to download it again. It’s very frustrating. When I try to launch the game by the search bar (which seems to help sometime) it gives me an error like this: Halo: The Master Chief Collection can’t open because it is offline. The storage device might be missing or disconnected. There’s no problem with either my drive or my connection. I don’t know what to do. Please help. I would like not to have to download the game every day.

I’m getting the same issue. Gonna post here hoping someone gives you a answer.

Same here! With the exception that even if I don’t shut down my pc I still may have to reinstall after awhile. Meaning that I usually just put my pc to sleep mode when I’m done.

It’s ridiculous how this is still a problem for months.

Here’s a workaround that doesn’t require downloading the game again.

Assuming you don’t have Halo installed or that you’re currently having the issue where you need to re-download the game
Here’s what I did:

If you have the msixvc file downloaded already, skip to step 10

1- Download a program called “Fiddler” and install
2- After you install Fiddler, run it, then open WinConfig
3- Check the MS Store checkbox
4- Start downloading MCC from the MS Store/Gamepass app
5- A bunch of entries will start showing up in Fiddler, Right click any one of them and choose “copy just URL”
6- Paste the link in your browser or preferably in a download manager (IDM, FDM…etc)
7- Download the file, it should be around 33GB and has an “.msivxc” extension - if the file you get is too small, try another entry in Fiddler
the current Halo build should have the file name “Microsoft.Chelan_1.1520.0.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe.msixvc”
8- Pause the download in the MS Store/Xbox app
9- Never stop/pause the download in your download manager or it will start from the beginning

10- Once the download is completed, open PowerShell in the folder where you downloaded the file
11- type the following and hit enter

> add-appxpackage ./Microsoft.Chelan_1.1520.0.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe.msixvc

*If you’re installing the game for the first time, it will take a while to install depending how fast your HDD is. (just wait until the progress bar is finished)
*If the game is already installed but you’re getting the error “This app encountered a problem. Please reinstall it to repair.” reinstalling the game using this PowerShell method should be instant.

Edit: Updated file name to current Halo MCC build that contains Halo 2

Been a problem for me since CE got added to PC. The simplest solution would be to say yoink it and get the steam version, but obviously, that really shouldn’t be what players are stuck resorting to by conventional means.

This is definitely a Microsoft Store problem. I’ve cleared the local cache multiple times, updated my drivers & windows software, formatted my drive to make sure no insider files were left over, resettled the store multiple times, reinstalled game services, and I’ve even factory reset my pc a couple of times. The problem persists.

Hopefully the H2A update helps fix the problem, but given the recent post regarding H2A’s launch, that’s a pipe dream for now. In the likely event that it still a problem, I’ll give CoLDxFiRE’s solution a whirl.

Has anyone found a solution to this issue? The Halo 2 update hasn’t made a dent…

UPDATE: Decided to cave and get the steam version, I don’t hold out hope that the H3 update would do anything so here ya go 343/MS here is another 40 bucks…

State of Decay 2 now gives me the same problem on the Windows 10 store. I’m probably going to end up doing the same. I’d recommend holding off for a bit because the big steam summer sale usually starts near the end of June, and MCC is likely to be discounted. (Rumored to start on June 25th) So Soundcreepy, If you can refund it and you don’t mind waiting just a bit more, you could save some money.

I really wonder why Microsoft hasn’t been successful in making one unified launcher that consistently works as intended?

Unfortunately I needed MCC for a few MP games/streams. Its unlikely to go on sale because it still has 3 parts to go. However your making me nervous for my SOD2, its been behaving but going to have to keep an eye on it :frowning:

Hey y’all -

Sorry to hear about this, it sounds extremely frustrating.

If you haven’t yet, please be sure to head over to Halo Support and submit a ticket for this. Our teams can’t investigate and/or poke other teams without knowing it’s an issue and the best way to make them aware is to file that ticket.

Thanks all!

Put in a ticket. @W1lddogg you jixed me, SOD2 started doing the same thing as well. Gears Tactics (Game Pass) and MC Dungeons (Owned) are fine though.

UPDATE: So I may close my ticket as this is starting to seem like an XBOX app issue.
So far I have just done my tests with SOD2 as it is the smaller game, however I unistalled the XBOX app and used the Windows Store to redownload the game, started it up, rebooted and lo and behold it was still working upon login. I am testing again installing it on my game drive as my C drive is dedicated to windows and I don’t want to keep games on it. Ill report back again after I get a little more testing in, and of course test MCC.
Summary: SOD2: Uninstalled Xbox App, installed to C: using Windows Store, survived a reboot with no issues. Trying again using my game drive (D:) and see if I get same results.
MCC: Pending as it is a bigger game.

UPDATE 2: My install of SOD2 on D: did not survive a reboot, however, without doing anything in the store (repair/reinstall) I found my default install location in Windows Settings. It was set to D: so I changed it to C: then immediately back to D: and the game launched. Still need to do a reset and see if it bugs out again, but at the very least this might be a simpler temp fix.
Summary: SOD2: Change to D: did not survive a restart, but changing then changing back the install location got the game working again.
MCC: still pending

UPDATE 3: Does look to be Windows related NOT Xbox app or game related. A reboot borked SOD2 again, and again a quick move to C: then back to D: solved the issue. Again not ideal, but much better than redownloading anything.

MCC: Downloading now, will give one last update

UPDATE 4 FINAL: Yep, MCC was acting the same way but the trick that was first mentioned by others (also here https://www.halowaypoint.com/en-us/forums/85d779d52cfd46918b4f8b638f2e3c7b/topics/solution-found-for-mcc-not-launching-after-restart/702ec981-3934-440e-b6f6-aa92b034285a/posts?page=1#post2 )works, safe to say it a windows issue…closing my ticket with support.

TLDR: if you have this issue and the game is not installed to C:, go into your default save location in windows settings, change from what drive you are on to C: hit apply then switch right back to the desired drive and hit apply, you will be able to play. annoying but a quick fix.

Glad to see there’s a temporary fix that doesn’t involve constantly reinstalling or using PowerShell commands. Still shouldn’t have to resort to tricks like this for it to work.

I previously submitted a ticket regarding this issue a couple of months ago and the agent recommended trying what I’ve already tried. (Resetting the windows store, clearing the local cache, checking for remaining insider flight files, factory resetting). As I wrote previously in this thread, this appears to be a Microsoft Store problem and not an MCC specific problem, especially now that another game is showing the same symptoms.
Either way, I’m sure that the teams at 343, Splash, and Ruffian are doing the best they can, and I most definitely appreciate the open communication with the community.

MS must have released an update for the Windows Store as I don’t have anymore issues with restarts and firing up the game. (Both MCC and SOD2) Make sure to keep the fix in the back pocket though.

The games now launch and run as expected while not installed on the C: drive?

Thats correct. Both games are on D, both games survive a reboot. Not sure if windows is just messing with me or things are fixed.

I haven’t played the game because I’ve been traveling for work a bunch, just did a round of Windows updates and found the game already in a borked state. Its installed to my D drive as well. Here’s hoping this re-install is the last one…

i cant believe this has been a problem for so long i literally just reinstalled the game because it said it needed repair and then i opened it up and it proceeded to say i had none of the games installed so i restarted my pc just to find it saying i need to repair the game again :frowning:

After you re-install the game and launch it, do you make any changes?

  1. Launch the game
  2. Leave ALL settings on default.
  3. Play the game (Campaign or MP).
  4. After reaching a checkpoint in CP or playing through an MP game, quit to desktop
  5. Do a full PC reboot.

Does the issue happen again?

i did the temp fix that was listed above and it seems to work

I have had this issue three times this week, where the entire MCC has to be re-downloaded/installed on a PC restart.

This is completely unsustainable and I have cancelled my Xbox pass subscription until the issue is acknowledged and solved.

Hey this has happened to me too downloading the latest update for the nameplates around 1.03GB in size, it failed at 1.02 and gave me the same error. Debating reinstalling now.
