Need some tips

Pretty new to shooters…tried my first one ever last year. I picked this game back up after trying it before and not liking it because my community I am a part of wanted to support the series. However I am running into the same issues…this shooter just seems too fast paced and my K/D ratio and W/L% are just absolutely terrible here. I keep trying but the harder I try the worse it gets…starting to get a little frustrated because I want to like the game but I am not improving and I am stinking up the place lol.

Do you guys got any tips for someone who is new to the series?

My first to would be to get some practice in by playing the campaign legendary. Looks like you only played one mission. Good practice.

Wasn’t sure if that would help or not lol. Most games the AI is so much different then the actual players. Thank you. I will do so.

Finish the campaign first in Normal or Heroic, that will make you get used to the Covenant/UNSC/Promethean weapons and the new abilities (besides, you know, the story, man).

The problem here is not the enemies’ ability, but YOU having to get used to the new Thruster / Escalation / SCharge / Sprint / Hover-Aim / PSlide / ADS abilities.

It will be different vs playing against people. But you can practice headshots and some of the mechanics like ground pound.

No prob, msg me if you want to complete in Co-Op or something. (time zones will get in the way though)

I’d recommend playing all of the Halo games.

“The key to our future is sown in his past”

Play them all on Legendary. It helps a ton. Other than that, you should find a few friends and practice in custom games and forge. At the moment things are hectic due to the Achilles death squads ruling online MP.

Make sure you understand the concept of popping someone’s shields…

Eg. with the magnum it takes 4 hits to break the shields (doesn’t matter where you hit them)… but once their shields are down it’s either 3 more body shots or 1 head shot for the kill.

You need at least three magnum shots to weaken the shields enough for a melee to finish the job.

Each weapon has a different cadence. You don’t necessarily count the shots… but there is a definite rhythm to it.

Go online and find a group of users that suits your goals, behaviour, skill level, etc. There’s bound to be a group out there somewhere as playing with the ‘right’ type of users can help. Next, find your role/position. Know what areas of Halo you, personally excel at. Is it driving around in a Warthog? Is it picking up a rocket launcher and blowing up stuff? Do you prefer to play the objective and grab the enemy flag? Go play, experiment and find your place in the Halo world.

Since you are new, stick to things you feel you are good at doing. For example, try getting good with the assault rifle and learning how to dodge the other persons shot. It’s hard for someone to just pick this game up and avoid shots while landing shots with the magnum. This is why I think you should focus on one thing at a time. Once you feel like you have improved at dodging and are comfortable with the controls then start practicing with the magnum.

Playing smart has helped me more than anything. I am nowhere close to the best in 1v1 situations, so I always try to out smart the other person( whether that be retreating to more advantageous spot, back to teammates, or setting the other person up a nade) Nade placement is huge.

Also, play, play, play, play, and play some more. You just have to play shooters online against other people and you will see improvement, across all shooters, over time.

Get the hang of thrust… especially side to side… gets you away from 'nades… out of someone’s gun sights… avoids shoulder charges and ground pounds.

If you have a friend or two, before start matchmaking session, play octagon practice for like 20 minutes or so, try to strafe as hard as you can. Also you probably need to take down your aim acceleration to 1 or 2 and sensetivity to 3, inner dead zone to 0

Just lots and lots of practice. Learn the abilities of your spartan. Play campaign on heroic or legendary and use the weapons you’re comfortable with. Take a btb map in forge and stuff it with all the powerweapons, vehicles etc and fool around on it a lot with your friends. Play every playlist, lets say a minimum of 1 game per playlist a day in arena and warzone. You will get to know the maps and gametypes quicker. Warzone is about bosses not bases, focus on that and you will score good points for your team. Stick with a teammate, don’t go lone wolf if you are not good enough. Play smart and don’t rush it. I am definetely not a good player but still have fun with halo. And that is always the most important thing.

So good luck and have fun.

Haha, this made me chuckle

To improve individual skill playing the campaign will definately help but unless you are playing FFA H5 is very much a team game. To begin with try and stick with your team mates and give them support. Just getting one or two shots into people will make all the difference. Learning the maps is also important, the maps are designed with the new abilities in mind (thrust, clamber) watch some vids about the maps and these will show you quick routes and jumps as well as weapon placement.

The 4v4 modes can be pretty hectic especially for beginners so maybe try some BTB or warzone (although not on a weekend so much due to clans and the achilles armour as said above). Also if you are relatively new i would recommend going for a controller setup that gives you aim control whilst jumping such as bumper jumper. If you get too used to another setup this can be a very painfull transition (trust me i have tried) but can make a big difference in some situations.

Most of all, dont worry about stuff like K/D. its a very misleading stat that doesnt come close to telling the whole story.

The biggest tip I can ever give you, is never stop moving if you are either in the open or at a mid-long range. Weaving back and forth or even moving constantly in a circle will save your life, particularly if you’re in a long range battle with another player.

I’d suggest playing Custom Games to get familiar with the maps and the mechanics, as for online I’d recommend starting with BtB. The chaos and pretty large spread of weaponry and options to play is always a nice introduction. Back in Halo 3 they actually had a Basic Training playlist for new players which worked great. Halo differs from most modern shooters in that it’s still an Arena shooter at its core, and the run and gun thing will normally result in instantaneous death.

Heck, add me on live if you want and I’ll gladly play with you if you need a crew to play with regularly.

Work on your gunskill with the Magnum. It’s the most difficult weapon to master but it is the utility (precision) weapon you’ll always have access to. As Darwi said, only your final shot (5th with Magnum) needs to be a headshot. Break their shields first with 4 to the body.

Learn to strafe left to right while battling. Unless you’re just up 2 shots or so on an opponent, you’re going to need to move your feet.

That said, don’t always put too much emphasis on forcing 1v1 fights. Don’t overextend without need. Sometimes you want to back off of a fair fight when there’s the possibility of getting baited or cleaned up.

I’ve got a lot more, but that’s a few off the top of my head. You can add me if you want someone to Octagon with; it’s a training gametype made only to constantly fight and improve your shot/strafe.

The best practice is to find a forge map that is an arena type with no obstacles. Just you and your friend standing there on opposite sides and make the respawn time low and just practice shooting each other. Go 1v1 and the best shot wins

Sorry just saw the guy right above me mention the octagon game type
