Need Needler Tips

The needler always seems to be the worst weapon in every Bungie game’s sandbox. In CE, all people knowledgeable in its competitive side say that every weapon is useful EXCEPT the needler. In H2 and H2A, I tried killing people with a single needler and, as long as people had room to move, it was incapable of hitting anything, much less killing. Same with H3, the projectiles are too slow and don’t track enough to hit anyone who is even partially trying to evade the projectiles. It only started getting good in Reach and even more so in H4, but that was probably to compensate for sprint.

At this point it seems the needlers in Halos 1-3 are only really effective in the campaigns and are completely useless in multiplayer, so to all the Halo vets who’ve been playing since the beginning, has this weapon ever been good, or is it just an MCC thing? If it has been good, please tell me what I’m doing wrong, here. I really want to efficiently utilize the entire sandbox, but this particular gun just refuses to work with me!

I find it’s useless in CE and 2’s multiplayer. It’s fairly good in H3, but you need to make sure you get a jump on your opponent.

Hce and h2 needlers aren’t worth picking up. The h3 needler is only good in medium range.

I found the change to make it not dual wieldable in Halo 3 interesting. I never found it powerful at all in Halo 2, and even when duel wielding I would lose fights trying it. Maybe that was just me though. It was buffed in Halo 3, which is probably why we can’t dual wield it as it would then have been too powerful.

I feel the same way. The needles wouldn’t track heavily enough and the rate of fire was slow. That paired with the movement speeds of Halo 2 made picking up the Needler near pointless.

As someone previously stated, you need to get the jump on your opponent. Preferably with them running away from you, unaware that you are behind them. The needler is one of those weapons that is rarely used by experienced players. If i pick up the needler i am either completely out of ammo with my current weapon, or I want to pick it up to get an “insult” kill with it lol. Getting kills with the needler is a slap to the face of an experienced opponent. Sometimes if i get bored in a match I will intentionally seek out the needler just to see how many “insult” kills i can rack up for fun. I wouldn’t recommend focusing on making the needler a viable weapon of choice if you are seriously trying to sharpen your skill set. Any experienced player will outgun the needler 9/10 times, no matter how good you are with it. If you’re just looking to relax and have some fun with the needler, don’t hold back! Cheers!

The needler in h3 is underrated. If you catch someone off guard, the needler kills so fast, they will hardly have time to react. But the needler is useless, if your opponent is facing you and has a decent strafe.

The halo 2 needler is the worst gun in the entire franchise.

I remember a time when Halo CE players nicknamed it the “Elite Killer” because of just how rediculously good at was at killing elites from medium range.

Min multiplayer I’ve never found a use for it other than to self-inpose a handicap if playing again inexperienced people.

That can’t be right, it must be a glitch or something. You really should have killed him in the first explosion. I doubt players have more health than the enemies in campaign, there I can kill anything with 8 needles, tops. Did you modify the custom game settings in any way?

That’s just lag.

I thought so.

I like to try and use other weapons in the sandbox as well. So I’m not constantly getting BR kills all the time because it kind of gets boring. Reading some peoples thoughts on the needlers, I totally agree. Halo CE’s and 2’s needlers are not the best. However Halo 3’s and somewhat of Halo 2’s Anniversary needlers are amazing. For Halo 3, the key is definitely getting the jump on your opponent. Take for instance on the map Last Resort, I like to jump off the spinning wheel and let the needler shards fly in the air towards my opponent for a deadly surprise attack, majority the time they don’t have enough reaction time to get away because the shards just go insanely fast when coming down from a high point. Then for Halo 2 Anniversary, I find that duel wielding and getting close and personal is the key.

The Needler is a weapon that I want to like, but in multiplayer it’s usually less effective than an empty pistol. In Halo 4, it’s a proper power weapon. In Halo 3, if your target is strafing at all, you’re going to have a hard time. But if they’re moving right at you, then the Needler makes short work of them. But in CE and 2, the only way you’re ever going to get a kill with a Needler is if your target is not moving. At all. This is true even in H2A, where they made the Needler useless simply because that’s how it was in Halo 2. (Seriously 343, why?)

The Needler is pretty much a campaign only weapon. Literally useless in Halo’s multiplayer environment.

Pro tip = Don’t waste time picking it up.

Needler’s by and far useless (although it was a force in Halo 3 beta), but it does fill a roll in H3. You need to be a certain moderate distance away, and it functions better as a ambush weapon, meaning that it’s more useful if the other player is looking/running a different direction. It’s also impossible to dodge in the long hall on The Pit. With its super-quick reload, it is possible to pick up some multi-kills in the right circumstances.
