Need help understanding melee exchanges.

This has bugged me for a while but it’s a trap I keep falling into when I choke.

  1. I (at full health) get surprised by the appearance of an enemy spartan (who is also at full health) at close range.
  2. I melee his frontside and attempt to shoot him dead.
  3. He melees back before I can do so which kills me instead.

Am I understanding this right? What can I do differently in these situations. I’ve been trying to improve my FFA game lately and I’ve been running into these situations more frequently there.

EDIT: I saw another thread where they said it takes two melees to the front to kill a full health spartan but I there’ve been times where it’s seems like the three steps mentioned above actually took place and I was killed with one melee to the front. Then again, they may have fired at me while I melee’d them I don’t know. Again, I’m confused and need help lol.

I’m not entirely sure what’s going on here, but many times it makes sense to fire your weapon first, to get their shield low enough that one melee will finish them off. That way you can close the gap while firing your weapon and melee once for the kill.

Thanks. However obvious that may be to some it’s just what I needed to hear. When they’re far enough away that’s what I do but when I turn a corner and run into an enemy I just melee and try to shoot but I’ll just reverse that and see how that goes.

You got shot before he hit you it’s the only way and it’s pretty common

Depends on whether they started shooting you 1st for a bit. They can melee you last and kill you after shooting 1st. By the time you get ready for your second melee, it’s too late unless they were missing shots or not hurting you enough in the 1st place.

It might depend on button layout. Like for instance my melee was above the trigger so in order to melee and still keep firing with out stopping for a slit second I moved it. Or at least I did I ended up reseting it then deciding to go back to it but I can’t figure out why the mapping isn’t working. I’ve been stuck for hours.

When it comes to CQC, it is best to melee when the shield is about to pop since the bleed-through damage will eliminate your enemy.

Try to get good at the melee/thrust away, headshot combo… highly effective. You won’t win them all, but it greatly increases your chances at coming out on top.

To kill someone with a magnum and melee you need 3 shots on then melee. With br its 6 shots (2 bursts) and melee. Light rifle 2 shots and melee and DMR 2 shots the melee (DMR I’m not too sure of)

This is what enemies may be doing to you

That’s true, regarding the DMR…

Damn I didn’t realise who this was until just then. You’re the kid that we had the match last 12 minutes and in the last 5 seconds you got a kill to win over me. Mercy FFA Slayer

Yeah I’m about to switch to bumper jumper and see if that helps

Very helpful. I’ve been paying closer attention and noticed that mostly lose to people with AR’s or SMG’s in these situations while I struggle to pop their head with a magnum. Thanks.

Oh awesome, that was an intense match. I’m trying hard for onyx, almost at Diamond 6 now.
