Need help aiming in Infinite? (if it feels off to you try this set up for controllers)

I will agree a lot of it is performance issues. When I turned off performance mode on my Series X the game stuttered a lot and no controller set up can help that. But if performance isn’t the issue then this should help. Hope they can fix a lot of these issues as I don’t remember people having them in the flights.

I said I’d update this post if I found a more optimized config. I believe I have, but of course, each to their own. I’m still convinced that Halo Infinite doesn’t feel as smooth on the XBO S as it might on the Series X (I still haven’t had the opportunity to buy one but as soon as I get hold of one, I’ll update again), but I’ve been messing with my controller config for a few weeks now and I think I’ve found some ways to improve the experience.

None of this is novel. There are numerous articles out there with a variety of things you can try; however, this one best sums up what the majority are saying and helped me most: h-t-t-p-s://www.windowscentral.com/best-halo-infinite-controller-settings

Prior, I had look acceleration set to 5 and sensitivity set to 3.5! Lowest of any Halo game I’ve ever played. The aim just felt super jolty and off at anything higher. Here’s the recommendation including notes on what I settled on.

Look Acceleration and Sensitivity

  • Look Acceleration: 4
  • Look Sensitivity (Horizontal): 6.0
  • Look Sensitivity (Vertical): 6.0

My sensitivity is currently set to 5 as 6 felt a little too fast for me right now. As I get used to 5, I may increase it… or maybe I found the sweet spot.

Move Thumbstick

  • Center Deadzone: 0
  • Maximum Input Threshold: 10
  • Axial Deadzone: 0

Look Thumbstick

  • Center Deadzone: 0
  • Maximum Input Threshold: 15
  • Axial Deadzone: 0

I had to set my deadzones to 2 on all the above because of drift. It’s noted in the article that you should account for this and set as needed. I went into a training game while messing with this, found a point firstly on the floor to determine if my spartan was moving with hands off the controller, and then secondly chose a fixed point to aim at on a wall to determine if aiming was moving with hands off the controller. I did this zoomed in and out as both yielded different results. I increased the deadzones by 0.5 each time until there was no movement.

So there we have it. I played with these settings in a training game until I was consistently winning battles against Spartan level bots and then went into quick play. Massive improvement! I’m not over or under extending while tracking enemies, and my accuracy has improved drastically! I was even able to headshot consistently with the sniper!!! Now that was an improvement. Damn! It felt good to not feel impeded by poor aim.

Additional notes: I play on a 55 inch screen with FOV set to 90. I have also customized my button layout as none of the schemes satisfied my play style. I’ve generally been an all round player in the past. Consistent performance with the BR, generally good at sniping and close counters brawling, and have always been able to traverse maps effectively. To continue to be an all-rounder, I need to be able to aim consistently at all ranges, melee without degraded aim, and jump and crouch quickly. Recon doesn’t lend to this, I can’t stand L-Trigger zoom on Halo, I need crouch to be on a stick so I can look and crouch, and I need to be able to look and melee at the same time. So I went with Legacy and switched B - Crouch/Slide with L-Thumbstick - Sprint.

It feels good to be back! Bring on the FFA!

Alright… I messed with it again. I’m sure you want this post to die, but this config feels the best so far and after four games where I saw instant results, I’m pretty sure this is what I’m sticking with. I watched some of the HCS this past weekend and as I was watching I was following a Reddit thread where people were posting the pro’s controller configurations. There’s some huge variations!

I was getting on with the above (previous post), but it still didn’t feel right. It’s kinda strange because what I’ve ended up with is much different but feels the best, and if there’s anything I’ve learnt on this controller config journey, it’s that it has to feel right to you. I ended up with a config that’s closest to Renegade, from Cloud9, tweaked for personal pref.

  • You can find Renegade’s config here: h-t-t-p-s://clips.twitch.tv/SteamyPuzzledPeanutPJSugar-YMl_qcFy-64uJE_A
  • Pros Config Reddit Thread: h-t-t-p-s://www.reddit.com/r/CompetitiveHalo/comments/r20p1y/prostreamer_controller_settings/

Here’s what I have now

Look Acceleration and Sensitivity

  • Look Acceleration: 4
  • Look Sensitivity (Horizontal): 4.0
  • Look Sensitivity (Vertical): 4.0

Move Thumbstick

  • Center Deadzone: 4
  • Maximum Input Threshold: 5
  • Axial Deadzone: 4

Look Thumbstick

  • Center Deadzone: 4
  • Maximum Input Threshold: 0
  • Axial Deadzone: 4

Conclusion

Sensitivity is low. Lowest of any Halo game I’ve ever played, but this is giving me increased accuracy. If you check my stats, my overall accuracy wasn’t a huge improvement in the games with this config; however, my headshot kill count was improved by 600% consistently! Crazy! I felt like I was nailing headshots with the pistol. This is something I’ve been unable to do in Halo Infinite until now.

You’re supposed to set deadzones only just enough to mitigate drift. I only need 2 to do this, but my aim felt shaky. That could just be me so a little higher helped to avoid the shaky feeling.

I’ve read that Move input should be medium so you can easily move at max when needed but without that jutting feeling. I tried 10. Tried 2. Settled with 5. Does it make much difference? I don’t know. It wasn’t super easy to tell in the training ground.

Lastly, I’ve read that look threshold should be maxed out, giving you the most accurate control of the look stick… I beg to differ. With maximum control, I feel like I’m penalized for every touch of the trigger. It throws me off. If I react too fast, then my aim is all over the place. Yea it should be reactive, but I don’t need it to jolt as my thumb jolts. I was a little apprehensive about the 0, but Renegade went for it so I figured I’d give it a try and It feels great! I can still turn and melee well in close up battles, but now my medium and long range is better. Prior, if a match came up on Behemoth, I felt like I was relegated to close up skirmishes which is not helpful on that map, but now I can pistol across the map! I was even getting some kills with the Commando

So there you have it. The journey will continue, but this will be my last post on this thread. Thanks @The_Cool_Spoon for kicking it off. It’s been fun. I’ve never had to put so much effort into finding a controller config in a game before. Maybe I’m getting pedantic in my old age. What’s next? Setting the thermostat to multiple configurations?! I hope not.

Thanks for reading, and let me know if you found this helpful!

I loved that this post got as many views and comments as it did. Feel free to keep posting as long as you want because I read them every time. I haven’t really seen another Waypoint post that goes as in depth as this one so I’m hoping it lives forever.

Here I am, keeping it alive again

I finally got myself a Series X! (It was actually a couple of weeks ago and I’ve been meaning to update this thread). So it’s probably no surprise, huge improvements!!! Accuracy, UP! Kills, UP! Increased my FOV. Frame rate is 60 FPS. The graphics on my 55" 4K are incredible! The jump from XBO S to Series X is insane. I’m very pleased.

It’s a little disappointing for all the folks out there that for one reason or another can’t upgrade to the latest hardware because although 343i says that the game can be played across all platforms, they’re not upfront about the difference in performance. Yes, Infinite Multiplayer is playable, but even if you’re an Onyx class player, you’d play better on Series X than you would on XBO S purely because of the hardware the console is sporting.

The only way you could allow all platforms to be equal would be to under utilize the extra power that the Series X has to offer, which would be a shame.

Bottom line: There’s things you can do to very much improve aiming on XBO S, and Infinite altogether; however, the biggest impact I’ve experienced is the console upgrade. Everything feels SO smooth and responsive. This is how the game was meant to be played. 343i should be more upfront about that.

Congrats! I was lucky enough to get a XSX day one and I bought a TV that can do 120 Hz and man does that really effect how I play. Everything just feels smoother so I completely agree with you there.

One thing 343 needs to do for Series S is bring back the 120 hz mode it had during the flights. Not sure why they got rid of it but if I owned one I would be on here arguing for them to bring it back for sure.

no amount of playing with the settings makes it feel good. I think the problem is its just not consistent. How it feels for me is like there care constantly sensitivity spikes. I am constantly being surprised by how much my reticle moves and telling myself “i definitely did not move my stick that far and long”. If its been nearly 2 months of daily playing and my muscle memory is still being fooled there is something wrong with consistency.

Have you adjusted the aim acceleration because that is what ramps up the sensitivity and causes it to change while aiming, I really wish I could turn it off but maxing it out is the closest you will get. Might I ask what platform you play on and what kind of controller you are using? It could also be desync and lag issues if you aren’t playing in your regions servers or your internet. I haven’t tried Halo on anything other than the Series X but I do know when I turn the 120fps mode on the game feels jumpy and like it can’t hold a steady frame rate so that may also be an issue. It could also be your screen not being able to keep up with the frame rate. Sadly there are a lot of things but I would try everything you can because for me it does play super smooth and I think everyone deserves to play Halo that way.

Ya, that feeling that your brain is telling your reticule to go to a point but you can’t just physically do it… it’s frustrating. You can, however, get the Look settings tolerable by using Zero Max Input Threshold (so the aim is easier controlled for small adjustments), lower sensitivities as needed (vert and horiz don’t need to be the same), and zero center deadzone with Axial a little higher until it feels easy.

I have and no settings help.
I play on PC with xbox one /360 controllers
And ive tried vsinc enabled and it doesn’t help either.

Maybe try joining the Halo discord and asking for help in the community help channel. Someone may have the same experiences and know how to help. I have heard that if you don’t cap your frame rate ot may cause consistency issues but I can’t guarantee that will help you specifically.

Figured I would comment with some more findings. This comes from a friend who had trouble zoomed with snipers and other such weapons. I asked if he had adjusted the zoom sensitivity as you can adjust it separately. After the change he said it really helped his aim.

So if you find you always go just a bit past your target when zoomed in try lowering the zoom sensitivity.

Hi, I post this purely as a Halo player from the very start to help those in the community a bit older and fans of previous Halo’s
My go to settings on every halo have been slow and steady shots, with recticle not flashing or bouncing round the screen but sitting where I need it to be,
Since the start I have tried every YouTube vid and settings video to find settings like previous halo’s
After hours and hours of frustration I have found them, it’s just like halo 2/3.
If anyone’s interested I will post on here and I promise they completely transform your aim back to the good old days

So minor update but I still use this and finally made it to Onyx this season. It wasn’t really a skill thing i just don’t have a lot of time to play so getting Onyx was fun and this control scheme is definitely one of the reasons i made it. Aiming and the controls just feel so nice still. Seems a lot of people saw the post so i hope it was able to help some of them out.

I’ve always felt like the sniper in this game is broken compared to previous halos, to the point where I don’t even pick it up. I will have to give these set-ups a try, thanks for sharing everyone!

For those that have a controller paddles:

One thing i didn’t say on here is what i have my paddles set to. Hold the controller normally and flip it over but still have the front facing away from you, read them from left to right and I have them as:

A, X, Y, Right Stick Click.

[ i have a Scuf Instinct Pro so for an Elite controller the longer paddles would correspond to A and Right Stick click while the shorter are X and Y.]

I would say that having a controller with paddles is a massive help. It let’s me do things that would otherwise be impossible and if you can get one i would recommend it.

Saw 2 different posts today about the aiming in Infinite. Since the forums are shutting down i figured i’d post here one last time to try to help those struggling to find a good control scheme.

This has worked for me and i hope it can help others.

Same,
It really feels like certain wepaons (sniper shock rifle, sentinal beam) were made with M&K in mind becuase they feel terrible on controller
