Need help aiming in Infinite? (if it feels off to you try this set up for controllers)

I have heard many complaints about aiming in Infinte and I might have figured out where these complaints are coming from as I think it feels smooth and almost perfect for me. The only thing I don’t like is that the max sensitivity is too low.

Try this controller set up. I made it too feel like the older Halo games while still being able to zoom with something other than clicking the stick in. Maybe this will help.

A: JUMP
B: MELEE
X: RELOAD
Y: SWAP WEAPONS
RT: SHOOT
RB: EQUIPMENT
LT: THROW GENADE
LB: ZOOM
LEFT STICK: SPRINT
RIGHT STICK: CROUCH
DPAD: set this up how you want to to drop weapons, swap grenades, use the AI pulse, and to ping targets

Also MAX OUT AIM ACCELERATION!!!

In every game I play I either max it or turn it off if possible. For those that don’t know: aim acceleration is the speeding up of the turning of the camera the longer you hold a particular direction. This always throws me off as growing up every game seemed to have linear aim acceleration which means it just always turns at whatever sensitivity you have it set to instead of ramping up to that sensitivity the longer you push a particular direction so maxing out aim acceleration should make it feel more linear as it starts closer to your chosen sensitivity. Maybe that is where a lot of your problems are stemming from and I think if you make this change it would help a lot. Turning it as low as it can go doesn’t turn it off in Infinite so don’t do that. Aim acceleration, when not linear, has always made me either over aim or under aim which I am willing to bet the biggest problem so it feels like aim assist or bullet magnetism are too low.

As a 20 year veteran of Halo who has been playing since I was 5, I would say please give this set up a try as I was able to do really well and get multiple games in a row over 20 kills on BTB and was able to pull off some really good sniper multikills along with finishing top 3 if not top place on the leaderboards. It will take a few games to get used to probably but it has worked for me. I am also not a sweat at Halo, I’d say I’m good but not great.

Edit: additionally people have suggested to change the Field of View (FOV) and stick deadzone. For FOV I would suggest if it feels like no matter what sensitivity you put it at you are turning too fast or can’t see enough then up the FOV. Additionally increasing the FOV will help with recoil control as the percentage of the visual of your screen rising will be lower but if things are too hard to see even at closer ranges then lower the FOV. I play with my FOV 90 to 105. For deadzone, well that will vary per controller as stick drift is an unfortunate reality so if your stick moves your camera or spartan on its own up the deadzone until that no longer occurs. The deadzone is a radius around the center of your stick input that is not registered. This was made to help stick drift because as controllers get more use the sticks will wear out and not be able to hold there original position as well so they may pull you certain directions when you don’t mean for them to.

Thanks for the suggestion, will give it a try this evening. It does seem a little off for me but am getting used to it, my wife on the other hand is having a hard time with it so your idea may help her out.

I just use Recon controls like I’ve done for every Halo since 3 including MCC. Works for me but understandable if you haven’t used that since, the default controls were definitely weird to me.

I’m on Universal Reclaimer (or “Legacy”) myself, but I didn’t think of the aiming acceleration like that. I’ll try this out myself tonight.

I used to do that but doesn’t it relegate zooming to a stick click? In newer games I felt that it put me at a disadvantage since it was awkward to re-aim after getting shot so I made the scheme above.

The aim acceleration suggestions is interesting. I’ll try this to see it helps. Thanks!

Yeah I guess it could. I’ve never had an issue with it though and I’m pretty decent at the game. I’m not sure if there’s a stick threshold but you could always adjust that if it’s a problem.

I play a lot of shooters so using the moment stick to zoom just feels weird which is why I struggling with it. I would say I’m on the upper end of “good” at Halo without being great. Decently often I have great games and get 20+ kills in BTB or Arena but I’m not immune to losing badly either.

It really feels sometimes inconsistent. But the tip with the aim accel. is for sure not bad.

Here another helpful thing, because the settings for all the different Sensetivities, Deadzones and Treshold is really complex: youtubeDOTcom/watch?v=U_Rp39R6jsg (not allowed to post links, replace the DOT with a .)

I watched it last flight two times and today one more time and NOW i get it. It helped me a bit to have better settings, but i must play more to check if it really helped in long term

To everyone who tries this let me know if it helps. Hope to see you guys out there.

Hey, I went and tried this like I said I would.

It really does help. I’m able to respond to threats and track much more effectively at base sensitivity, which is fantastic.

Very good advice OP :+1:

Thanks I am glad to help. I want people to enjoy this game as much as I do.

There’s no settings that can fix the low sensitivity on controller. It’s literally just capped to a low sensitivity. CoD has like 5 times faster sensitivity and so does every other game. I can’t play this game, it’s too slow to turn and aim

Stopped reading at A for jump.

Aiming feels weird on controller for every setting, no amount of tinkering can fix that.

These settings for me made aiming feel great. During the flights I made these settings and have stuck with it since. The only think I don’t like is the low sensitivity.

Hahaha yeah I was gonna say!

I made my own custom controls where everything was exactly how I wanted it, but unfortunately I couldn’t set Zoom Level without un-setting whatever I mapped it to.

So I looked for a controller preset that had sprint mapped where I wanted it (to set zoom level to that automatically) and Lo!

Helljumper is my exact custom control configuration. Lmao

I’m gonna cross-post something I put in another thread since these are similar topics. There’s an issue with the Steam default controller input profile that breaks Infinite aiming and can be easily corrected. So aside from the settings changes OP suggests, if you’re running Halo on Steam check out one of the methods below.

Hi all,

This post is fairly lengthy but I promise it’s worth stepping through here if you’re playing with a controller on Steam PC and feeling like the aim just isn’t right. I’ve got a brief description below as well as multiple methods to fix the problems with aim, and then some supplemental information at the bottom.

BACKGROUND:

After playing Infinite on launch my hopes were dashed by what felt like one of the worst controller aim implementations I’ve experienced in a Halo game. Regardless of how much tweaking I did for my in-game settings, the aim just did not feel good at all. Sensitivity, dead zones, and acceleration were all over the place when aiming compared to MCC.

Some of you may already be aware of this, but I was not - By default, Steam is overlaying it’s own controller dead zones and acceleration curves on top of what you’re setting up in-game. If you haven’t played with the Steam controller configuration on your own yet (or even if you have), I can all but guarantee your aiming experience in Halo is about to take a giant leap forward. Steps are below so you can try for yourself.

SOLUTIONS:

Method 1:

  1. Right click Halo Infinite from your game library
  2. Click ‘Properties…’
  3. Select ‘Controller’ from the left panel
  4. Under the ‘Override for Halo Infinite’ drop-down list, select ‘Disable Steam Input’

Method 2:

  1. Enter ‘Big Picture Mode’
  2. Navigate to ‘Library’
  3. Navigate to Halo Infinite and select the game
  4. Select ‘Manage Game’
  5. Select ‘Controller Options’
  6. In the ‘Steam Input Per-Game Setting’ drop-down list choose the ‘Forced Off’ option

Method 3:

  1. This one isn’t a set of steps for Steam, but you also have the option of simply installing and playing the game through the Xbox application instead, where this issue is not present.

By following the above steps, you’re disabling anything Steam is changing about how your sticks function, and leaving it solely up to the Infinite in-game settings.

To close this post out, I’d like to thank 343 for putting out an incredible game multiple weeks ahead of the launch date. Thank you!!!

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:

– Explanation of sensitivity, dead zones, and acceleration –

I feel like I should add that fully understanding the fundamentals of acceleration, sensitivity, dead zones, and the max input threshold are also very important to be able to tweak and fine tune your settings to something that will cater best to your preferences and playstyle. There is a great youtube video for MCC that does a good job of explaining how dead zones and acceleration (and acceleration zone a.k.a. max input threshold) work. Search for “Halo MCC - Modern Aiming Explained” by No Strings Prd.

– Special note for Dual Shock controller users –

If you’re using a Dual Shock and aren’t using DS4Windows, I think you might need to get that installed so that Windows will natively recognize the controller, and not just Steam. I no longer use a DS controller but have for many years and this software worked great and continues to get active updates. Simply search “ds4windows” on google and the first result should be the github for ryochan7.

Even I felt that aiming was off in some way.

Aiming does feel off. I contributed to a post on the old forums about it during the test flight and from 343i’s feedback roundup, it doesn’t look like they did much to rectify. The sniper definitely feels wayyyy better! Kudos on that one, but for overall aiming there’s something still amiss.

I tried the settings outlined in this post to no avail. I’m currently playing on Xbox One S and I think the performance in general on the console has something to do with it. If you release a game on all platforms, it should perform well from one to the next. I still need to play around a little more but reducing my sensitivity to 3.5 greatly improved my accuracy and my kills per game went from 10 to 18. I was winning more battles and dying less immediately. On previous Halo games I’ve had sensitivity as high as 6. This feels very strange to me, but given slower sprint and the map distance compared to previous titles, the lower sensitivity is feeling better.

I think keeping an open mind and trying new configs is the best we can do. I don’t think anything surrounding aiming is going to change drastically. Like I said, I’ll keep playing around with it and see if I can find a more optimized config. If I do, I’ll update this thread.
