Hello All!
I am currently writing for a machinima and the main character, Tom Armstrong, receives a new AI to aid him and his team of Spartan IVs and I’m stumped on a name for it.
The basic info of the AI is…
-
Originally made with the intended purpose of consumer level home security - Modified to act as a Spartan IVs guidance, self-preservation, and defensive system - Works really well when defending a point or object - Doesn’t work so well when working with forerunners due to their unpredictability. - Can be obliviously naive when it comes to casual conversation. - Made nervous easily, especially when Spartans are near an edge of a building or landscape - Acts like a mom with their Spartan, trying to keep them alive and happy for as long as they can. - Ambiguous gender, but leans towards being female.Their appearance is a 2D image of a white lock within a blue brain within a white circle outlined with a blue line. (so much white and blue owo)
If you guys could come up with something because I’m totally stumped on what to name it.
POSSIBLE NAMES:
-
Watch Dog - Killer Orca - Sentient - Ahrkhuhmiidiiz - Sentinal - Bighair1970 - Vigilance or “Vigil” - Bighair1970 - Rhea - ragnorok117
Depends on what the story’s central theme revolves around, either the AI’s development with the Spartan team, or the actions of the Spartan team itself. Might help to give a brief background on the plot, too. Although based on the info here, I think a good title would be “Sentient.”
If its a security AI, you could always just go borderline simple and call them Watchdog. The UNSC is not entirely original with its AI naming, especially when it comes to dumb AIs (I assume this is one from the way you describe it)
Why would it be repurposed though? Surely the UNSC could give these Spartans a specifically tailored dumb AI.

I wanted to have it repurposed as I didn’t want to seem cliche with the “specially made AI tailored specifically for badass Spartan that can do literally anything” and I wanted to put restraints on the AI as a program and as a character so that we can’t just say “let’s have the AI do it” or something along those lines.
WatchDog is a good name, but I don’t think it’ll work as it is very similar to the “Watch_Dogs” gaming series.
I’m still bouncing around ideas in my head and may add a list of possible names in the OG Post.

I wouldn’t worry too much, you basically have all the answers there already. Dumb AIs are common, and range in size and complexity greatly depending on the needed job. Look up the dumb tactical AI from Halo the Flood, or Auntie Dot from Halo Reach, and you’ll see what I imagine this one being used for.
I like Ahrkhuhmiidiiz’s idea of “sentient” but I would like to suggest that “Sentinel” may work better.
Other suggestions could be “Vigilance” or any shortened version of this “Vigil” for instance, or if you have a name for the company that was selling the AI you could use some play on this company’s name.
I saw most of the given names here in this forum. Most were good, others were a bit too close to other halo AI’s or video games. One name i came up with was ‘Rhea’. She was one of the good Greek titans who helped the gods and also the mother of the big three (Zeus, Poseidon, Hades) so maybe she draws her motherly affection from that personification. And as many AI’s are named after mythological creatures or beings, the name fits in nicely. And Greek is also nice because the actual Spartans were Greek and the Halo Spartans armor has been said to resemble Greek armor, so a Greek goddess would make a good name even if you don’t choose Rhea.
After a bit of searching I found “Bandog”, which means guard dog or watch dog. But doesnt sound too much like either.
