I’ll keep this to the point. Despite enjoying aspects of h5 I never warmed to it as I did with h2 and h3. I preferred it to vanilla Reach however.
However mythic arena is an absolutely excellent addition to h5 and I encourage everyone to give it a try.
It seems to have struck the sweet spot between modern and classic, within the h5 ecosystem and will be interesting to see them build upon this for Halo infinite. I’m hopeful that this playlist is 343’s way of gathering data. If infinite uses this as a foundation the future is looking bright.

> What’s the Playlist about…? Mechanical Wise…?
“Perhaps the biggest differentiator between Mythic and our other modes is its changes to movement. With its finely-tuned adjustments here, players will see base movement speed, strafe acceleration, and jump height increased. In terms of Spartan Abilities, only Thrust and Stabilize remain with a few reductions in their effectiveness. Be mindful of these changes as they will greatly influence how you need to approach traversing around each of the maps”
I highly recommend you give it a try. It definitely hit the sweet spot OP is talking about
Man I hope so. With only a year until Infinite I’m sure the mechanics are pretty much set in stone so I hope Mythic is pretty much Infinite within H5 and they’re seeing how people react.
I really hope 343 built Infinite with Mythic Arena mechanics in mind because my gosh it is near perfect. It takes everything I like from the multiplayers of every Halo and fuses it into one with nothing I dislike from any of them. Some tweaks I would make:
Swap stabilize for clamber. Stabilize doesn’t really seem to have a place in the mode (though granted I haven’t played many games yet) whereas clamber is very useful in making map traversal much more interesting.
Radar. I can live without it but seeings as this seems heavily Halo 2 inspired I’d go ahead and add it in like Halo 2. Useful to figure out enemy locations without having to rely on footsteps.
Remove the 3-hit melee. Haven’t experimented with this much but I’m kinda in the “If it ain’t broke don’t fix it” mindset here. 2-hit melee works really well I feel and I don’t really see the need to change that.
I think there were one or two other things I could think of but I forgot them now. Unfortunately as others have said 343 will have already built the game around whatever mechanics they’ve chosen years ago. Let’s hope it’s these.
I’ve been talking about having a significantly simplified Spartan Ability sandbox as a potential way of addressing movement issues, and I find it to be a genuinely plausible way 343i could try to bridge classic and advancement movement. (And by plausible, I don’t mean one that would necessarily satisfy even a majority of players, but literally an approach I could see 343i attempting, whether popular or unpopular.) I think it’s worth saying that if this is the route they take, it’s not going to be this precise combination (Thrust and Stabilize), or even any combination of specific Spartan Abilities. If this is the approach 343i takes with the mechanics of Halo Infinite, I find it likely we will at the very least see a new ability paired with Thrust (but of the Halo 5 abilities Thrust is the most likely to remain, if any one of them does). Though it’s possible we could see multi-functional abilities where the behavior depends on context, combining some of the mechanics from Halo 5 while introducing new ones, which would make the amount of movement mechanics seem larger than it actually is.
Needless to say, this is highly speculative and significantly influenced by my views on gameplay design.
I think this could be a great foundation for infinite, I’ve made that pretty clear. I guess my only remaining issue is to minimise randomness from standard gameplay.
The removal of all the other spartan abilities do this, however stabilise arguably still contributes to this. Not too precious but just being objective about this. If you’re in a firefight and someone jumps of a ledge etc… Before there would be less variables to consider and you could for instance place a grenade to halt their escape/remove shields etc…
With stabilise in its current form, you couldn’t tell if that person was going to hover or not. Admittedly they said effectiveness of this ability has been toned down, so this may not be a likely scenario anymore… But even still, that kind of randomness can be very frustrating (no issue as having as a feature in custom games).
