A lot of people are upset about the new helmet designs. If you ask me, that’s perfectly understandable; they are highly stylized, and many of them most certainly look different from those in previous iterations of the Halo games. That said, I don’t think that their appearance is “stupid” or “non-functional” like many users here believe.
One complaint is that the visors are wrong-- that the iridescent plates on the helmets which were once intended to be essentially face masks, like those on modern motorcycle helmets, are now non-functional because the “see-through” portion is not over the wearer’s eyes, and therefore they cannot be worn without blinding said wearer. I’d have to disagree.
I think that these masks look the way they do for the same reason that tanks don’t have windshields; a large visor only makes for an unnecessary Achilles’ Heel for a Spartan. It says “aim here! aim for my face!”. Now, it could be that most helmets have a visor because it allows light to come into the mask, similar to how some display systems that we make today recycle external light to create an image on a screen with less energy. A tiny sliver of visor gives a light source for the wearer’s HUD, without giving them too big of a weak spot. Canonically speaking, these new helmets were likely based on the experimental GUNGNIR helmet from Reach, which had a similar visor.
I like the new designs. They’re strange, and I’m not used to them, but I like them. As such, I thought I’d offer a canonical explanation for their shape for those who are concerned that they “would not work” as real helmets. Tell me what you think.

I think of it like Iron man and how his helmet is a see-thru helmet using camera tech to display a hud and full view as if the mask was not there. Correct me if im wrong Marvel fans.
I liked that bit about “Tanks don’t have windshields” and that they are like the GUGNIR helmet.
I hope I find a helmet with a balance between the visor-no visor. I want something new, but also to reflect on my past as a Halo player!
(Head-Canonical order)
Halo Wars- Mark IV
Reach- Operator
Halo CE- MarkV
Halo 2- MarkVI
ODST- Odst
Halo 3- MarkVI
Halo 4- ?

Lol, I use this as a basis and hypothesis all the time when arguing the point of helmets, glad were of equal mind.
One guy even said to me, and I qoute ‘Doesn’t he just see through the eye holes?’
To which I responded ‘You ever where a halloween mask where it just sits on your nose and the eye holes were a few inches away from your eyes but obstruct practically everything else?’
That’s why I argue the practicality of technology over casualty rate, visor’s produce a lens flare and can be very easy to shoot through once those shields are down. (I.E. Kat from Reach Campaign)
Introduce a system in which that hardened armor covers the whole face and a sensory system and camera based systems take that place of visuals and senses and allows for better tactical ability and less casualty. In the case of an EMP however…helmet’s off…IMMEDIATELY.
