My thoughts on Recon.

Okay, I’m going to lay my two cents on the whole Recon issue.

In the old days when Halo 3 was first released, Recon meant that you had impressed Bungie enough for them to give it to you, and it was like finding the teeth of a goose, damn near impossible to see in multiplayer. In fact, very few non-Bungie employees wore Recon or even had it.

Then the Vidmasters came out, and people actually had to EARN Recon. Recon got more visible in Multiplayer as a result, and those players got to strut their Recon stuff with pride at having accomplished 7 tasks, most of which were as difficult as possible.

Now with the waves of people getting Recon, it’s become too common to see, almost like the standard Mark VI armor. And there are newbs with Recon thinking they’re hot players because they have what was once a rare armor, when really they’re horrible players who would have never earned Recon normally. I even had a player complain to me, and I quote:

> How did you beat me? I had Recon!

Frankly, I’m only impressed in players that use Recon ONLY if they have all seven Vidmasters, because that means they took the time and effort to accomplish some of the most difficult tasks possible (Except for Brainpan, 7 on the 7th and Lightswitch, those are easy as hell compared to ones like Annual and Endure.) I had a friend of mine who had earned all seven Vidmasters and wore his Recon proudly actually change to another armor out of disgust at all the newbs parading around in what took him a long time to earn.

While I am finally happy to have Recon, I will not wear it outside of Machinimas or special events. While I like the Recon design, I will instead proudly wear the Katana when I unlock it, because I will still have to work to earn it, instead of wearing Recon and having veteran players look down on me for not having legitimately earned it. My pride is more important than Recon. Maybe when I myself have all seven Vidmasters, I will wear Recon, but not before then will I wear Recon in multiplayer, this I swear upon my stack of Halo novels.

I am also sick of hearing new players whine about not having Recon unlocked for them already. If a vet complains, that means he has put in the time in an attempt to unlock Recon, and has shown support for Bungie by not only buying their game, but investing time in playing it online, and thus should be rewarded for it. But a new guy? He/she can go back to the end of the line and wait for Recon, God -Yoink!-! If 343I wants to fix the Recon issue, they need to put veteran players first. If a new player wants Recon then odds are he/she only bought the game to have what many in the Halo community consider a badge of honor without having earned it.

As for people wanting the Bungie Chestplate? No. Just no. That was and always will be Bungie-exclusive. It was made to help distinguish Bungie employees after the Vidmasters were released, and it should stay that way. It was fine to release the Eternal flames for Reach on the final Bungie Day for Halo, and it shows those who spent that day sending Bungie off in style as me and my friends did. I have worn my eternal flames with pride since then. If I EVER hear of 343I releasing Eternal for all players, I will douse my flames and never wear them again, just like my friend did when he stopped wearing Recon, this I also swear!

Sorry for the wall of text, but this is my opinion on the issue. You may or may not agree with it, but all I ask is that you respect it as I respect your opinions.

I totally, completely, 100% agree.

I spent SO much time and effort trying day after day to get all 7 of those vidmasters, and when I finally do, I get the terrible news that it is just given away to players who did absolutely nothing to get them. I spent SO MUCH TIME trying and trying to get them, and now, no one can tell if I actually earned them, or if I was just a lazy kid who just bought Halo 3 and has it for some reason.

I also agree with the flames thing. I have the blue, but I use the Orange. If for some reason they get taken away, I’m going right to the blue. I love Bungie, and that’s why Halo 3 is the perfect game. It is 100% Bungie. EVERYTHING about it was perfect. I could not find ONE flaw with it.

But, again, I feel your pain with the whole free Recon give away crap.

I agree for a good part. Though, not everyone has Recon still. Slow waves, unorganized, inefficient… But, regardless, I will always rock the Katana. I will only wear a Recon right shoulder because it looks nice. It’s just funny to see people wearing full Recon, and it’s irritating to see Privates and lower ranked players having it when I haven’t. (I lost my chance at Endure, the one Vidmaster I don’t have, to lag). I can’t wait until I can say I’ve unlocked all the armor in Halo 3. Just gotta wait until I get on a wave.

I got Recon back when you had to be a Bungie favorite to get it, and I still wear it because it looks cool. I would still wear it even if it was the default helmet because I love the look of it

…Recon was never an award for getting something on Bungie favorites. This was something that was confirmed a while ago.

I spent hours getting the Endure and Annual vidmasters, now they are giving recon out for free…

I don’t really agree with any of this, but it’s all right that you all do. I’d probably be a little upset if I had managed to finish the Vidmaster challenges. I didn’t, though, and I have Recon anyway. I like the look of the chest, and the shoulders are pretty cool. Never cared much for the helmet, to be perfectly honest.

There’s a point to this, though. The reason 343i unlocked Recon for all players? Because otherwise, there’d be no way to get it.

When you finished your Vidmaster challenges, you had to go to Bungie.net to press the “Give Me Recon” button, at which point it would unlock the armor for you. But after Bungie turned over full control to 343i, that button went the way of the nameplates: no support, and therefore no unlocking. After March 31st, even if a player had completed Vidmaster, they wouldn’t be able to get Recon.

And honestly, it was probably a huge hassle for 343i to support the unlocking function on Waypoint. I’m not a programmer, but I assume the amount of work required to code that on this website would have been enormous, diverting resources away from more worthwhile pursuits. So they had a choice: give it to everybody, or give it to nobody.

There was only one fair decision. It’s one thing to make getting an armor set incredibly difficult, but it’s a far more malicious option to deny it to everyone who came late to the party.

So yes, all glory be to those who won Recon before everyone had it. Hold your heads high with pride, as you have achieved what few others have. But don’t begrudge new players – or even old ones, like myself, who didn’t have the drive to chase it – for wanting to wear a cool suit of armor.

Because of the transition from Bungie to 343, it made sense to do this. I earned Recon through the vidmasters. Some people complained when this was an option and I defended it because it gave the game replayability. Halo 3 was great, but I’m ready to move to Halo 4. To be honest, I don’t care what other people wear for armor in the previous games.

That’s how I got it - you should have to work for it

I did kind of : D

Its ok Halo 3 will be almost dead after Halo 4 drops

I got Recon from Bungie Favourites, I never actually wore it.

Guys come on now, it is just virtuel armor in a 5 year old game.

Halo 4 is gonna be released in 2 months, does recon even matter anymore?

Actually it might matter when Halo 4 considering the armor permutation will return for a 4th Halo game.

In what way does Recon being in Halo 4 affect those getting it for free in Halo 3?

It doesn’t as you already know.

There’s already a Recon helmet in H4 and it has no connection to having it in Halo 3.

I have a completely random question for everybody here. Is 343 giving recon to the people who still play ODST, or is it only for the people who are playing halo 3?

Only those who have played Halo 3 on either the normal disc or the Halo 3 Mythic disc.

For what was once was exclusive is now just plain nooby :frowning:

I’m new to Halo online and have only had it since March of this year. I have all Vidmasters including Endure and have done some of them twice. And I got Recon for free before I got the Vidmasters. Never have I worn Recon because I don’t fancy it. I assume you could call me a noob player, but I do know the difficulty of getting it. I have to agree with you on this matter.

They’re giving out recon for free now?
Thats terrible!!!
I spent HOURS on those vidmasters, and I’m sure others did too!
Lightswitch. That was easy to get, but required time to get to Lieutenant rank.
Annual took a little while, but was achievable.
7 on 7 was too easy.
Brainpan was also easy.
But ODST, that required time and effort.
Endure… well… that took me and my friends HOURS to complete. On the last wave of the last set to get that achievement, we almost died. All of us. But luckily we did it.
Deja Vu, yep, that was the fun one, but took time.
And finally Classic. That was a challenge, but fun.

I find this “giving out recon for free to all the people who did NOTHING to achieve it” a stupid choice and a waste of time for all the people that actually committed to trying to get it. Sorry, but I have to disagree on this one.
(Sorry for rambling, but I’m kinda annoyed that I wasted my time on something people get for free now).

I felt the exact same for those who actually earned the Recon from Bungie.
