My thoughts on reach and how I'd change things.

Firstly, I want to say this is my first post in these forums so go easy on the new guy.
In this thread I’m going to go over what I think is wrong in halo reach and what I’d do to fix it if i had the power.

Now to kick off the discussion I’ll begin with something near and dear to my heart.

The energy sword and close quarters combat:
I don’t know who decided that melee weapons and actual melees themselves needed to be changed so drastically, but I hope one day that they’re brought back to their former glory. The sword used to be the funnest aspect of the halo games for me. In reach I despise the damn thing, why would I use a weapon whose damage can be lessened by a punch? Why was that a good idea? I can’t punch shot gun pellets away why can I punch a sword away? And before anyone goes off about how they’re two different weapons it doesn’t matter; because the sword lunge had it’s knee caps broke so now the sword and shotty now serve almost the exact same role in reach. Actually, the shotty has more applications than the sword simply because it doesn’t glow like it’s radioactive (something that makes hiding around corners a little more tricky).

Fix: I think this answer is going to become a broken record but, bungie shouldn’t have tried to fix what wasn’t broken. Out of all the halo games H3’s melee system felt the most balanced to me in respect to the rest of the elements in that game. The speed of the melees and how the sword functioned are simply funner, not to mention there’s no horse crap about false bull trues.

Weapons: (The ones not mentioned I feel are fine, nay even balanced in reach’s sandbox)
The PL: I don’t like it, it’s slow like reach’s gameplay. Which is indeed, a bad thing. Not the mention the unintentional betrayals this will net you.
The RL: The placement of it in maps doesn’t sit well with me. I dont’ believe there should be anti-vehicle weapons on any map without vehicles.
The Sniper Rifle: It, as well as the DMR, shouldn’t be anti-vehicle. We have plenty of other weapons to deal with vehicles we didn’t need more to join that club.
The FR: What was wrong with the beam rifle and why did we need to merge it with the sentinel beam? Covenant weapons are widely ineffective and we didn’t need another one.
The PR: Why? We have the plasma rifle we did not need a less accurate version of it.
Grenades: Too damaging and has too wide an AOE.
The DMR: This is halo, I never once looked at the BR and thought, “How great would it be if this gun was semi-automatic and was unreliable in close to medium combat distances.” This gaming series is about skill, whichever player with the most of it should win fights, period. But now we have drastic bullet spread; granted every halo game had some degree of spread non ever had such a horrid case of it as the dmr. This weapon has no place in halo, it should not have replaced the BR. Yes, I’m aware the title update will give play lists that make this argument moot. But I’m saying here that it should never have been added in the first place.
The Pistol: Too much bullet spread, hopefully the TU will fix.
The Needler: Out of every weapon in the game none are so dependent on what enemy you’re facing than the needler. Great against elites, aweful against spartans.
The ES: It should have a larger threat area and attacks with it should be faster. The attacks themselves should also be easier to connect, this also applies to regular melees and the hammer.

Vehicles:
The revenant: I miss the chopper… I don’t know why it was replaced with a fast tiny wraith. And just to put this out there, I also miss the spectre. Actually I think the spectre would have been a better fit for reach than the revenant. The warthog deserves a covenant counterpart.
The Goose: In H3 it was funny, in reach it’s giving your opponents free points.
The Hog: My problems with the hog stretch to all vehicles as well; they don’t control as well as the used to, ruble will stop them dead in the tracks, and they aren’t as much of a threat on the battle field as they used to be (excluding the banshee and to an extend the revenant). The gauss variant wasn’t over powered in H3, why is it now? The gauss should have a longer cool down time between shots.
The Banshee: Remove banshee bomb, extend the recharge time in between dodges.
The Wraith: It used to be on par with the scorpion, It should still be.
The Falcon: The grenade variant should be in multiplayer. It should be able to carry a(n) additional passenger(s) (like in campaign), for objective game types like CTF and assault.

(Ran out of space, see next post…)

Maps:
I don’t know what it is but I hate the flow and game play of nearly all forge maps in reach. Maybe it’s because the community hasn’t had years to dabble with it yet, but I’m just not feeling the magic I used to in H3 when we had a harder time building maps. The FW maps that shipped on disc are some of my most hated maps from any game. It’s sad that now we can vote for maps and the ones we’re voting for are based on whether or not we can easily abuse it.

It’s alright though, because I believe I’ve realized the flaw with all reach multiplayer maps. There are too many game types to cater to. It’s as simple as that, if 343 used community maps specifically built for specific game types the maps would be many times less frustrating and certainly more focused. Aside from being a step forward this would also usher forth a much grander variety of maps for multiplayer.

Armor Abilities:
Sprint: Should last longer.
Evade: A longer wait in between uses and a much longer recharge time would be nice.
Jet Pack: The bane of forgers everywhere, I hate the thing simply because it breaks maps. Now I’m not saying it’s a bad AA, I am however saying it is a substantial thorn for map makers who now need to design maps that aren’t instantly dominated by jet pack.
Active Camo: My personal favorite, a tad over powered. The change I’d make would be to further randomize the radar jam component of it in addition to the TU changes. People like me who use it all the time can now instantly tell the difference between a fake dot and a real opponent. Which makes invisibility as well as it’s radar jam an extremely potent weapon. Also, people take issue with invisible snipers. I can sympathize, I remember reading a post somewhere suggesting that people using camo shouldn’t be allowed to use the scope of any weapon. I agree full heartedly with this and if anyone could find that thread and link it I’d appreciate it.
Armor Lock: No no no no no no. Invincibility never belonged in any fps for any reason, ever. Even if it didn’t cast off stickies, repel rockets, destroy vehicles, and recharge shields while using it the ability would still be over powered. I wish 343 would give everyone the achievement tied to it and remove it from the game.
Drop Shield: It should sustain more damage, last longer, and instantly heal both the shields and health of everyone in it after they’ve remained inside it for the current amount of time it takes to work.

Multiplayer Specifics:

Yoinks: This… I understand that doing an assassination is supposed to be risky because its basically enemy humiliation instead of a simple slap on the back. But let me tell ya, my second onyx commendation was for multiplayer assassinations. I hate childish yoinkers as much as I hate map abusers, team killers, and tea baggers. I will betray anyone who yoinks me, it’s kill stealing and noobish, period. I’d appreciate it if there was at least a playlist in which people assassinating and being assassinated were invulnerable to outside damage. But let’s be serious, that isn’t going to happen.

The zombie play list: I don’t understand why neither bungie nor 343 have fixed the zombie maps yet. Every map in this playlist can currently be easily abused by human players, which makes being a zombie more of a chore than something to enjoy. And I do mean every map, even countdown. To clarify; when I say abusing a map I mean the human players either being outside of the intended play zone or playing outside of where it should be allowed for zombies. Outside of intended play zone: A top the sides of the map in asylum. Being where they shouldn’t be allowed: a top the starting area in the cage. What will it take to get these problems fixed 343? If I edited the maps myself to fix these issues and provided download links to them will you guys put them in matchmaking? Because I would…

Another problem in this playlist is when an alpha zombie quits the game a human is made an alpha to replace him, this simply isn’t fair. Especially when, counting the missing quitter as -1, there are still at least three zombies remaining. To fix I’d say make one of the non-alpha zombies into an alpha, and in the event there isn’t a spare normal zombie THEN make a human an alpha.

This playlist has many problems, I’m sure you’re all familiar with the false betrayal sword lunge crap? Would be nice, if at all possible, if you’d fix this 343.

The lack of Elite only playlists:(clarification: the sangheli, not “mlg”)
From the start myself and a large group of players have wanted an Elite only playlist, where players are forced to play as Elites on maps changed for Elite gameplay. Why wouldn’t anyone want this?

Bloom: It’s only a problem in the dmr and pistol, the TU should fix.

The TU:
From what I’ve read 343’s changes for what affects all of reach’s multiplayer are… minimal, I hope they add more to the list as time passes. Or at least plans on an additional, more comprehensive and widespread TU for the future. I’d be enthralled if 343 eventually changed some of the things I mentioned in this thread.

Conclusion:
If you guys got the feeling I would have preferred a halo 3.5 over reach you’d be right, and no I won’t stop playing reach and return to H3. I never said reach wasn’t fun it just has it’s seriously ugly bits.

I believe that’s all there is to talk about. If I think of more things I’ll add them later. Thanks for reading it if you got this far.

To everyone looking for the TL:DR: Screw you, you lazy Yoink!.

I’m not trying to troll you whatsoever but I’m just going to mention a few things based on Halo Reach. You have to remember this was before Halo: CE/CEA. So the DMR does make sense to be in the game due to the BR not being discovered. Also, Reach was a planet what was overrun by the Covanent (I apologize if I spelled it wrong.) Also, this is why the DMR could have not been implemented in to CE because all the blueprint were maybe on this planet? I don’t know, just theories. The energy sword block. Again this could have been taught to these set of spartans to do but we don’t know.

The Vehicles part. For all we know, the chopper may have not been made by this point in time.

For the armor abilities, this could have been on Reach only, we don’t know because of the storyline and -Yoink- like that.

There’s my opinion, I think it’s a good theory to me. It may not make sense either because I can’t make things makes sense, I suck at that as well.

I liked a couple of points you made, like the BR, Mongoose, DMR/Snipe V Vehicles, the Revenant and a few more, but not all of it.

Welcome to the Forums, and I apologise for not taking the time to reply further.

Well, 343/bungie don’t seem to care about canon any more. You did see that jet pack in the halo 4 trailer yes? :[

Any way, assuming canon is still correct:
Yes, the DMR is chronologically sound and the BR wouldn’t make sense. As for your explanation of sword block; I suppose that could be the reason.

The chopper, however, was in halo wars which preceded halo reach, it would have made sense for it to have been on reach in the areas that the brutes hit.

Thanks for the response!

Thanks Bob.

Updated.

good points

i disagree with your opinion on AA’s tho, i believe they should be scrapped completely. we never needed them before, we don’t need them now, and they screw up gameplay mechanics completely. instead, i would like to see player speed/jump heigh/gravity increases to balance out the gameplay. this would also give us the ability to strafe, which is basically pointless now because player speed is SO SLOW.

i think besides the actual gameplay mechanics, the maps are a huge reason why reach sucks. the only way you can even use a vehicle is in big team battle and maybe objective. wtf did they create new anti-vehicle weapons and AAs for if there are barely any vehicles available for?

not to mention they are all green, blue and gray and/or recycled with the campaign HALF of which are from previous halo games that i was tired of playing 8 years ago and that don’t even work with things like jetpack and sprint.

I like your ideas, but please, no AAs.

Instead something new and skillful.

My thoughts on whats wrong with Reach could be listed. I’ve currently got 73 things on said list and counting. So I’ll just give you the short version:

Reach.

/Short version

Welcome my new best friend to the forums.

I would just like to say that 343 does in fact care about canon. What you saw in the Halo 4 trailer was merely a thruster pack. All of the spartan II (I believe) have one of those built in for navigating around in zero G space.

Here for you liking skip to 7:14 and be enlighten of the fact that Frank confirms that it is not a jet pack.

Enjoy.

Now you can easily sleep at night

Thank God. Although if 343 care about canon where’d the masterchief get his new helmet?

I don’t remember if I read a post or saw a video saying that the new armor would be a part of the story. So I assume the new looks of our beloved character is explained in the game.

I really doubt that the caretakers of the Halo franchise would leave such a big detail unexplained.

I can’t wait to hear that…

Was there just a spare helmet lying in the cryo chamber? Or is the master chief actually a transformer?

Your points are valid, I still hate AA at large myself. I once said a long time ago on bungie that I play reach like assassins creed instead of like a halo game, and that I was neither proud of myself or bungie for making a “halo” game that doesn’t make me want to play it like one.

And yeah, physical player attributes should be changed for faster game play.

In reach armor abilities aren’t going anywhere, so I thought I might as well say how to make them better.

That is very good to know, thanks.
