My theory on Spartan Abilities.

This is simply what I think. Feel free to post your own theories.

My theory about SAs is that players will have a default Thruster pack, mapped to the former AA button. Different combos of TP and movement will trigger these SAs.

LB+RB: Tackle
LB+LS: Slide
A+RB: Ground Pound
LB(When facing a wall): Take cover

I may have missed a few, but whatever.

Well you are close. Spartan abilities are things any spartan can do on their own at any time.

All that really nails down is:

-nothing suit related

-not in loadouts (if they even will come back)

-multiple abilities with one spartan

I think that it will all be tied to 1 button say LB. And the direction or button imput will determine it.

For instance: Mid air just pressing LB and your guy ground pounds.

Any direction but foward on the left stick will let your person dodge.

LB plus forward would be sprint.

Let’s not forget that we have an entire D-pad to utilize on the controller.

Spartan Abilities pretty much refer to things like Dual-Wielding or Boarding, so I imagine that the “Thrust” or “Groundpoint” moves that we saw in the Beta Trailer are just going to be mapped to the D-Pad.

Up = Thrust

Left = ?

Right = ?

Down = Groundpound

Something around the lines of that.

Not everyone plays the same button layout as you. So let me help you.

Ability button + Melee: Tackle
Ability button + crouch: Slide
Jump + Melee: Ground smash
Ability button(When facing a wall): Tack cover

First off smash not pound. Ground pound is something in Reach (It’s a hiding thing).

Next up is a cover system… this interferes with game play in a lot of games. Please no, no one has ever gotten this right. If it was a button combo for the cover system then that could work. It would work even better if we had more buttons to play with. I would totally put that ability button on G.

Whatever it is, I just hope it doesn’t mess with my precious bumper jumper. :[

Like i said in my last post, not everyone plays the same button layout as you. I am currently on recon. Switch nade is on the D-pad with Ordnance in Halo 4, But if there is no ordnance and ability is on the D-Pad we could put switch nade to something else.

As far as I know, the D-Pad never changes from layout to layout.

And in regards to POD’s, seeing the how the overall vocal resistance against them is consistent with both “casuals” and “competitives” as opposed to other issues, like loadouts, which are 50-50 in terms of opinion, I’m expecting 343i to remove them. Just about everyone, casual or competitive, dislikes ordnance drops.

Also, with the confirmed removal of AA’s, I imagine that 343i will give switching grenades its own button and take full advantage of the D-Pad.

Triggering them with simple button combos is the only thing that would make sense to me.

Like as mentioned before and implying default thruster/booster gets laid on the current AA button, I could imagine:

thruster/booster forward + melee = tackle
Sprint + crouch = slide
holding jump and releasing it = advanced jump
(Advanced) jump + (holding) melee = smash
etc.

The D-pad would be impractical for performing such abilities/mechanics since you would have to take your thumb off the movement stick.

I think the tackle is half of an assassination. Other than that, I think it’s mainly the thrust pack that will be more utilized and mapped on the old AA button.

I don’t think it will be on the Dpad though. Unless the crouch button will be back on the stick, there won’t be a spot for grenade swapping.

I am the only one who sees Spartan abilities possibly becoming more inflammatory to the forums than armor lock and Halo 4 combined once we all see them in action.

Also I would bet that Spartan Abilities are going to be mapped to one button but the action is contextual like when pressed if in air will cause the ground pound and pressed while sprinting will thrust and so on.

I could find myself annoyed by getting flung backwards each time I rush for the melee (or the sword) by people ground-pounding, but that’s why 343i is running a beta. Because unlike Bungie, 343i claims to be using the beta to improve the game rather than to build up hype by giving fans an early look.

Left can be tackle, right can be… sprint or something (press once to sprint, press again to stop sprinting)

I imagine that they’ll keep the sprint button the same, or, they’ll move sprint to LB, crouch to LS, and grenade switching to B.

Even if it’s toggle rather than hold, the D-Pad can be a pain in terms of movement.

No, I’m fully prepared for the flood of inevitable “It’s random, its imbalanced, it’s not Haylo” comments. It’s already happening now to a degree.

> Also I would bet that Spartan Abilities are going to be mapped to one button but the action is contextual like when pressed if in air will cause the ground pound and pressed while sprinting will thrust and so on.

I think they will be mapped to multiple buttons instead of just a single button, depending on how many there are, while still being contextual.

For example, pressing B while in Midair would do a ground-pound, while pressing X in midair (the same context) would do something different, like a thruster pack in one direction.
