For almost two decades, Halo has had a very simple but effective color customization method. Primary color, Secondary color. Sometimes tertiary. You had a choice of a couple shades of a color, and that’s pretty much it, not much else to it. As far as patterns, wear and tear, materials go, there was none. Everyone looked pretty much the same except for the color. Even Combat Evolved had a simple pick a color scenario.
Now it’s changed, though.
Halo Infinite came out with the Coating system, which covers weapons, armor and vehicles. Instead of picking two colors, you now had a wide selection of a set of colors, shades, patterns, wear and tear and materials. You could have one coating that’s just dark green like Chief, another that’s green and white, another that’s green camouflage, and more. Now instead of picking two colors, you have a wide range of selections with the colors you like most. Want to wear black and red but not look like everyone else? Now you can. And you start with a bunch of options and you can get more Coatings simply by playing the game. Free Battlepass track, acheivements, Campaign, Challenges. Some special coatings can also be found in the paid Battlepass or in the Shop for people who might not have the time to grind for goodies, or they just really want that Halloween special coating in the Store. The potential far surpasses the previous Primary/Secondary system, which was very simple and didn’t offer much in terms of individuality seeing as how most people wear 5 colors anyway. Are the coatings the best system possible? No. But that being said it’s much better than what we had previously which was disgustingly limiting.

Also the colors looks super clean, I really like it
I’ve seen a couple I like already so I know when the full game is out my Spartan is gonna be looking premium.

Right, but there’s more than likely going to be a large number of coatings to choose from. In the full game, especially post-launch, seeing a bunch of people with the same coating isn’t likely. Also my guy, You saw tons of people wearing the same colors back during the Primary/Secondary system lmao what are you talking about?

yeah your right but there probably going to be monetized, it makes sense but i still wish it wasnt.

I get you. It is the best thing for the game in the long run though.
Forget about the colours for a minute, let’s think about all those tasty free maps we are gonna be getting.

Not all of them. Alot of coatings will be unlocked by playing Campaign, or getting achievements, or completing challenges, or partaking in events, or the free track in the battlepass. There will be some unlocked via the Shop or paid Battlepass but most of them you can get just by playing

All those new fresh and tasty maps at launch, and all the free new maps coming Season after Season after Season. New modes, new Armors, new Vehicles and Weapons and Campaign DLC and Multiplayer story and game expansions
I think (and I understand why they don’t cause it would probably be a headache. At least at launch.) the other side would be happy if they had a “blank” coating which would allow you to choose from colors and patterns you’ve unlocked which would allow for the level of customization the others want. I personally don’t mind the coatings but that would be a welcome addition in my opinion. Perhaps they don’t do it for balancing reasons or something. They don’t want a completely black Spartan hiding in shadows like the Roze skin in CoD.
Overall, I’m fine with coatings. I think there will be more than enough. They allow for Jorge style armor and such. But I think if they wanted to make everyone happy, they allow you to ‘make your own’ coating.
I also saw this on another thread, but they should allow you to either apply a coating or not to the chest pieces and such. Like the add ons. Sometimes I like the grey unpainted look cause it fits with the look and other times I think it would look better with the coating applies to it.

That’s a great idea and a good point, I thought about that myself as far as people using black armor for an in-game advantage like the Roze skins. Even with outlines it’d be easy to hide with full black armor.
What would be really really nice, is if down the road they allow us to make our own coatings with 24 or more colours to pick from.

They won’t. I’d be surprised if each core had more than a dozen or so coatings. Mk VII core will probably get more than that but definitely nowhere near enough to make up for all the combinations that were lost.
It’s similar to Destiny I guess, where many players where share the same color palette for a weapon or armor piece, until you unlock a new one using in-game currency. There would need to be 100s if not 1000s of color coatings to feel semi-unique. I’m fine with this, though I think it would be cooler if we could set our own color palette or pattern for the coating.

What makes you say that?
Unfortunately most of the coatings and customisation will be monetized and with the in-game currency being bought only it really limits how a lot of people will be able to customise their spartan. The coatings have surprised me and im sure there will be plenty to choose from espescially considering the game being a live service with on going additions but i really wish it wasn’t a system based on making money.
