My Ranking System Idea

I haven’t been able to read a whole lot on any news of the Halo 4 ranking system, but to me it sounds like they don’t want a public 1-50 because it promotes boosting and cheating. They also seem to acknowledge that the reach system sucked and they will not be using it.

I personally think they are right about the 1-50 promotes the cheating, but I also like to have a number rank for each playlist, it allows me to push myself in different areas and compare myself to other players.

I could think of a couple ways to fix the boosting issues at least.

  1. Restrict who you can que with
Maybe just say you can only run ranked matches with people 3 levels higher/lower than you. I know this might now allow some friends to play with each other in ranked matches unless they level with each other and one gets carried up.

  2. Less EXP towards your rating if you que with higher levels
This idea kind of came from World of Warcraft. If people run a dungeon at say level 15 and they have an 85 go with them, they get a low less experience and level slower than if they just went in with a group of players the same level.

These are just a couple of ideas though. I guess I have never boosted anything, so I don’t really understand how it works.

Or you could just make the rank invisible to everybody but the player it belongs to. this is the easiest fix, as it still provides most people goal to reach, yet cuts down drastically on boosting or cheating of any kind.

> Or you could just make the rank invisible to everybody but the player it belongs to. this is the easiest fix, as it still provides most people goal to reach, yet cuts down drastically on boosting or cheating of any kind.

It also takes away bragging rights.

You say that as if egotistical elitism is a good thing.

EDIT: I should probably clarify what I mean.

The line between bragging rights and condescending trash-talking is a very thin and easily-crossed line. I can’t speak as to past games, but I know that during the days of Halo 3, trash-talking based on rank was extremely common. The higher ranks would attack any lower ranks they got matched with, prompting counterattacks like the infamous phrase, “HOW MUCH WAS YOUR 50?”

It’s really just a mess, and something that never should’ve came about to begin with. TrueSkill was never meant to be a ranking, reward, or goal system of any kind. It’s just a classification system. Treating it like a ranking system and encouraging bragging has the side-effect of encouraging trash-talking and arrogance. Hiding a person’s TrueSkill value avoids that. Letting people see their own rank only adds back the goal aspect seen in past ranking systems, while avoiding the trash-talking problem.

And? you don’t need to have bragging rights. you can still brag to your IRL friends if you wish. they can see it by coming over, or by you sending them a picture or something. And either way, you can still make it your goal to get the highest rank, without the need to brag about it.

I don’t see why some would throw away the best possible answer to the problem we currently face, just because they can’t brag about it to their friends. This isn’t needed, and the positives of this method completely outway the one possible downside it poses.

Bragging is awesome and promotes healthy competition imo.
Then again, there’s nothing really to brag about anymore except K/D.

Yeah you said it, 343 took the easy route and are going to leave a lot of people mad about making the ranks invisible.

Only 3 months until we find out if 343is new INVISIBLE Ranking system works or will look more like Reach’s

Only time will tell …

Im hoping for the best .

This hasn’t entirely been confirmed yet. All we know about the rank system is that the 1-50 isn’t returning, and the invisible ranks of Reach won’t be either. there will be some middle ground that supposedly keeps both sides of the argument happy.

I’m just going to keep hoping your rank is invisible to everybody but you. This really is the most effective solution. And if not being able to brag really bugs people enough to where they would prefer it invisible, then they could possibly make your rank only visible to you and those on your friends list. This way you have Somebody to challenge. This allows for a bit more cheating, but still a drastically reduced amount from halo 3.

I think it would make sense to have TWO ranks for everyone. A “social” rank, like in Reach, and a “True” rank, like in Halo 3. Your social rank is global, everyone can see it, and it doesn’t mean a thing except you play a lot of Halo. Your true rank is invisible to everyone but you and your friends. Not your party, just your friends. That way, you still get bragging rights, but there’s nothing to give trolls a reason to bother you. Social rank would still determine what you could see and buy from the armory, and it would give people a reason to grind through the game. The dangling carrot that’s so popular in most games now. True rank would determine who you get matched up with. Also, matchmaking would average the skill levels of people in a party. Two crap players and a pro would get matched up with average players. You can expect the pro to get 15-20 kills, but the two noobs would balance it out by getting 5 or 6 a piece, which would still keep the game fairly balanced if the other players all average around a dozen kills.

This system could be global, or by playlist, or even split. A Global social rank, with true rankings by playlist. The ranking that you and your friends see could be an average of your rank across all playlists that you frequent, with your playlist rank popping up in a corner whenever you’re browsing playlists.

I also just remembered a past suggestion I once had: add the option to display one’s TrueSkill rank publicly, but have it off by default.

Most people will just leave it on the default. The people who really wanna brag can reveal their ranks. The people who don’t want to get trash-talked can blend in with all the people that leave it on the default.

It might not help with cheating, but it’d help avoid arrogance and condescension while still giving the more boastful players an incentive to play. Hard to insult someone’s rank when you can’t see it.

The replies in this thread make me laugh. Make it so the bashful folks are able to hide their skill rank, don’t force hidden ranks on everyone. Some people enjoy competition and those that don’t can hide their rank.

I definitely can live with this!

Not really. Granted it’s fun being lower ranking than someone else, and then kicking their butt. But, it can also cause more problems. Personally, I only brag when I kill a dude.

I feel it would only cause problems to overly-sensitive players. I remember when bragging and trash talking were the norm amongst the high ranks. It was really fun and the competition would keep flourishing everyday. There were those bad seeds that went and put lower-skilled players down, but hey that’s always gonna happen. :stuck_out_tongue:

Or get MVP, or kill the same guy all match long every time he comes at you. I talk a HUGE amount of -Yoink- when someone can’t kill me, no matter how hard they try.

All Ranks should be Visible with the option to hide from others or maybe just friends list only .

For all the reasons to Hide your True skill Rank - all the same reasons are true to hide your progressive rank

A person isn’t “bashful” or oversensitive just because they’re sick of hearing elitists continually sling insults as if a number in a video game was an accurate measure of personal worth, bro. :\

Wait… Are ranks officially to be invisible now?

And a person isn’t generalizing when they lump an entire group of people into one stereotype. Oh wait…

No one thinks their rank equates to their personal worth. That is something you just made up now to attempt to bolster your position.

Don’t be mad at people that point out your rank. If your rank wasn’t there they would check your KD and on and on and on.

If you don’t want people talking about your rank or stats then hide them. What’s the problem with that?
