My Problems With Halo 5: Guardians

Before I begin, I’d like to just take the time to say that the actual gameplay itself in every game mode (Campaign, Arena, Warzone) is fun and very addicting. It’s just that there’s so many smaller things (or big things in Campaign’s case) that just make the experience a little bit worse.

Now, it’s late right now so I’m just going to jump in and list everything that annoys the hell out of me in-game.

  • Campaign - Oh, I could go on about this for days. Having followed the story from CE to now, I can safely say that Halo 5’s was, by far, the worst. The story felt, in my opinion, rushed, which is something that a game definitely should not feel like. Boss fights were boring and samey. Character development in terms of Fireteam Osiris and Blue Team (minus John and Buck) was awful, especially to those who haven’t bothered with the extended universe. The fact that Blue Team was playable in ONLY THREE LEVELS is just stupid beyond belief. People who invest in a main Halo game’s story expect to play as the Master Chief for more than a quarter of the game. And finally, to end my campaign section of the rant, the endings, both standard and Legendary, were really bad. The normal ending had an undeserved cliffhanger which was also a pile rubbish. The Legendary ending? An excuse to put a Halo ring in the game because Halo ring = Halo game obviously (COUGHReachCOUGH).
  • REQ system - Jeez… This… This is just wrong. Remember in the Halo 5 Beta when you unlocked a specific piece of armour by playing the game? Yeah? I liked that. Instead, 343 decided it would be a brilliant idea to make unlocking armour, emblems, etc. the most tedious and un-fun task to do in the world. Opening a Gold REQ pack to find you got common armour (or one of 5 Mongooses) is not, in any way, satisfying. I know what you’re gonna say. “You have to open Bronze and Silver first to get the bad stuff first.” I shouldn’t have to do that. If it says it’s the best pack, it should give me the best items. I want Ultra-Rares from a Gold REQ, not a variant of the Recruit armour. My advice is, make armour unlockable through actually playing the game, rather than through RNG. The REQ system should be for Warzone only. - Competitive Skill Rank - I’ll keep this one short. It should be based on player skill, not victories. - Lack of gametypes - Okay, come on. Seriously?! FIVE gametypes?! Slayer, Breakout, CTF, Strongholds and Warzone are not enough. Infection/Flood, King of the Hill, Grifball, Ricochet, Race and Assault should’ve been in there AT LAUNCH as well. SWAT, SWATnums, Shotty Snipers, Doubles and Warzone Assault are all variants in my books. - Theater - It’s crap. Where’s the option to record stuff? Oh wait, Xbox Game DVR, right. That thing that films in 30fps and 720p. Cool. - File Sharing - Where is it? - Big Team Battle maps - Okay, why are they all built in Forge and why are there only four, hm? A few non-Forge BTB maps would be nice. - Excuses about split-screen - This one is a bit weird for me to talk about, but it still annoys me. I haven’t played split-screen Halo in years. However, the absolute bullcrap excuse of “We needed 60fps” is unacceptable. They didn’t get rid of it because they needed to maintain frame rate, the got rid of it to sell more Xboxes. - Delayed Forge mode - This I’m slightly okay with, but in the future, if ANY feature is unfinished, delay the entire game. I want a completed, non-bugged game. Not one that has main features coming soon. That’s it from me for now. If I find anything else, I’ll add to it.

While I agree with you, be careful, they don’t take kindly to pointing out flaws around here.

Oh, don’t worry. I’m making a video that I’m going to upload to YouTube about this as well.

  • REQ system: They just need to add an armors only REQ really, or change it back to Reach’s CR system. But overall REQ is quite good.
  • Competitive skill ranking: I agree, tired of having a -Yoink- team to end up lowering my level.
  • Lack of Gametypes: 343i is pretty bad at releasing everything on time, it’s one of their flaws that they need to work on. That being said it is better we get a complete game with more to come than another MCC debacle.
  • Theatre: Honestly haven’t used it yet and don’t find much use since I have the xbox record button. Just more convenient for me to shoot a clip right then and there (sometimes), but I’m sure I’ll use it in the next year or so and by the time I do I hope it’s fixed of all bugs or problems there may be to it currently.
  • Filesharing: Look back up at Gametypes.
  • Big Team Battle: Look back up at Gametypes
  • Excuses about split-screen: Actually they did get rid of it for 60fps and 1080p something that the community have been on their -Yoink- about. I personally would rather have split screen but the fact of the matter is its just a bunch of crying babies mad once they get what they want.
  • Delayed Forge Mode: Again, Look back up to Gametypes.

> Character development in terms of Fireteam Osiris and Blue Team (minus John and Buck) was awful

I think players can feel familiar with John and Buck since they were present in previous games, but they didn’t get any more actual development in Halo 5 than any of the other characters.

John: In the beginning he’s still devastated after the loss of Cortana. At the end we have no idea what he’s thinking but he probably doesn’t feel good about having Cortana as an enemy. But that isn’t development. They nullified the original conflict (the loss) and replaced it with another. Cortana’s death was the one defining event in Halo 4 that shaped John’s character, but now it has no meaning going forward. If anything, his character regressed and started backtracking during Halo 5.

Buck: Aside from the “Every other Spartan”-scene (which ends up leading nowhere), he was just another part of Osiris hivemind. He has funny lines, but that’s his only defining part in the story.

Not a single character in Halo 5 progresses through conflict from state A to state B. Their personalities, their views, none of that changes during Halo 5. They are never challenged on a mental level.

The only person who is notably different from before is Cortana. But we don’t get to see that change. When the game begins, the change has already happened and she’s already a different person.

There’s 0 character development in Halo 5.

There is also only 1 character development throughout the original trilogy, and that is Arby turning sides. But in reality all it is was: “-Yoink- the profits are lying I’mma fight for my brothers now.”

So I don’t see the problem here.

The key phrase in this thread, “MY PROBLEMS,.”

Not everyone else, just you. The majority think the game is fine. The majority are playing it.

Yeah, and I’m sharing those problems. Deal with it. Also, like I said at the very beginning, I think that the gameplay itself is fun and addicting. The things I have problems with are the those around the gameplay (e.g. REQ, gametype range, CSR, etc).

And when people point out that the problems are trivial then you ignore them. So really it’s just whining at this point.
