For those who are not aware, Death Loop by Arkane Studios has been delayed till Q1 of 2021. Kena: Bridge of Spirits has also been delayed to Q1 of 2021. I’m not sure about Death Loop but the reasons behind the delay of Kena: Bridge of Spirits are pretty much the same reasons as the delay for Halo Infinite, or at least that’s how I’ve interpreted it. The key difference is Ember Labs and Arkane Studios outlined when in 2021 to expect the game. 343i did not.
In my opinion this is what lead to numerous rumours and wild speculation (some arguably true) about why the delay has happened, leading people to believe the amount of issues currently in the game are so bad it can take a full year maybe even more to address them and have the game in a playable state. If that’s the case fair enough just say Q4. People will always be upset about a delay, but most people will understand it’s for the greater good of the game.
I am all in favour for the delay, like I support it MASSIVELY. I can’t however, pretend it doesn’t hurt when I see a new COD being announced along with it’s a multiplayer reveal, the zombies reveal, confirmed release date and key figures of the COD community/content creators/Youtubers have played the multiplayer all within the space of a few weeks and we don’t even know if the key figures in the Halo community will play a Halo infinite beta let alone ourselves.

PREACH!
maybe the issues they are facing are the big ones (making the game good x one on up) or maybe the issues are so specific that releasing said issues may reveal more of the game than they are ready to?

Tbh that wouldn’t surprise me at all. They are trying to create that mystery and wonder like bungie did with CE. I know they said it would be a spiritual reboot but I think it’s starting to dawn on me that that the game is going to double down on the reboot aspect more than I was expecting

What hurts more is seeing how amazingly good looking Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War’s graphics look on next gen hardware. Then seeing Halo Infinite’s lackluster visuals.
I hope this extra year means they can prioritize making the game look good on the Xbox Series X, and have the Xbox One version as a downgrade. Right now Halo Infinite is an outdated looking Xbox One port,[1] which is completely unacceptable for a 10 year plan.

For real man, Halo infinite has been in development for 5 years. I know nothing about game development but I do know there’s loads of rumoured inside knowledge about why it looks the way it does, but until we get actual confirmation from 343 themselves there’s no official reason for why the game looks like that after 5 years.
As far as I’m aware the new cod has only been in development for a year, at max maybe 2 (I could be wrong). My friend made the argument that the COD development machine is a very well oiled one so they can produce these games very quickly at a relatively high quality. It just puts emphasis on the fact that 343i are lagging behind their peers when it comes to developing games for such a huge franchise and they still have some growing and learning to do. Like I want to support them and want them to do well but there’s only so much we can take. I think Halo 5’s campaign being as bad as it was has made us fans far less patient and has made it harder for us to support them.

I think CoD usually is in development for about 2 years, as they have multiple studios develop the games on a cycle.
Infinite’s development is being made with a smaller team than the multiple teams that create a CoD title.
I think with Infinite being made on a completely new engine, taking a whole new direction with story and gameplay approach and working on new and old hardware there’s a lot going on behind the scenes that makes the work load very large.
I think we as consumers aren’t getting the full story but to be honest that’s to be expected. End of the day Xbox is a business and they’re not likely to be fully transparent about problems developing a key title for the new console. I’m fine with the silence in development struggles. I’d rather them just get on with making the game at this point.
Either way if the game comes out good or bad we’ll just have to wait and see.

I understand the frustration. And a delay is a big deal. Xmas season is the most profitable season. CoD is a different situation. Yes Microsoft is a big company. But they have never really been a multiplatform company like Activision always has. Microsoft’s studios are smaller and have always had a level of independence from one another. Also are spread across the globe. Cod games are made by multiple studios at once. Raven trey arch, etc. Even when sledgehammer is up at bat in crunch for the the next game. Employees from the other studios are helping out In that games crunch even though thier studio is not getting a credit. Secondly Activisions management is well seasoned for cross platform releases.
Doing games for pc, one, and X is Microsofts first major adventure into cross platforms.
MMC really hurt the development on infinite. Granted the grunt work of MMC was outsourced. But it required the attention of 343 management do string it all together , taking them away from infinite.
The release date is probably not up to 343. Its Microsofts call and they wont make it till 343 shows them what they want to see. And back to the holiday season. I wouldnt be surprised if it didn’t get pushed till then where it is most profitable. Microsoft was banking on halo to sell systems. No one will buy a kid younger than 18 a $500 system unless its xmas or they are stupid rich.

I knew the scale of CODs development was large but I didn’t know it was to that extent.
“Xbox is a business and they’re not likely to be fully transparent about problems developing a key title for the new console.” This has offered a perspective that I didn’t really think about before. I know it’s obvious but these sort of things slip my mind when I’m writing so passionately XD.
i wouldn’t mind the silence if there were solid dates about info drops and what not. It just kinda feels like I’m being strung along, refreshing twitter to se if something new has happened. I fully acknowledge that’s a personal problem because I can’t manage my patience though.

In your opinion, when do you think the release date of Halo Infinite will be? A lot of people are expecting to see it in the spring time.
My opinion: I have waited 5 years…devoid of information, lacking depth, and having a dark vagueness that creeps into my very fears. 343 has shown in the past an effort to wipe the slate clean. An effort that means nothing in the end. For Halo players have a deep root in tradition. 343 tried to destroy tradition, resulting in a revolution that 343 eventually crumbled against. And so…we got what we wanted…or did we? What we did not realize is that 343 planned to give us what we needed instead of what we wanted. And thus, Halo Wars 2 was born. Bringing a breath of fresh air, yet locking tradition in the most secure of vaults, Halo Wars 2 gave us what we needed: evolution. For the gaming world was changing faster than ever, and even Halo, one of the great constants of the gaming world, had to change eventually. Halo Wars 2 though had a problem, it wasn’t an FPS, thus, the true Halo market was still missing important pieces of change. Yet hope was near. In 2018, Halo Infinite was announced, a mere year after Halo Wars 2 was released. And even the slight glimpse of the Master Chief’s helm gave enough hope to last a year of shadow and mystery with a glimmer of light. Then in 2019, the reveal was shown, and it was perfect. The hybrid art-style, remastered yet classic music, completely unchanged sound effects, and flawless presentation gave excitement that was the first great salvo of brightness since Halo 5. Then, after slight hints, tiny news, and smallish scraps of art, we got the reveal this year. And the reaction was…overall…mixed. The graphics were limited for a next-gen platform, a few features were added that the old-timers discouraged (including sprint, which actually had a good reason to exist due to the large open-world demographic. Can you imagine moving at Halo 3 speed throughout a massive map? It would be infuriating!), and the hybrid art-style. Yet it had many positives to add also! Even so, the game needed work. And it needed more time to do that. So 343 delayed the release. I am very happy about this! Do you know why? I have waited 5 years, I can wait a little longer.

> In your opinion, when do you think the release date of Halo Infinite will be? A lot of people are expecting to see it in the spring time.
To be honest I couldn’t tell you. Imo it probably depends on how the series x sells. If it sells well then spring would be my guess. But if the new console doesnt sell then imma guess they will try to save next xmas with halo. Halo is the biggest game Microsoft has and has ever had. Theyve always released it during the holidays. You never really see games as big as this - Cod, gears, final fantasy, etc released in the spring. Because they are old news by the time the next shopping season rolls around.
However the whole game pass concept has completely changed this landscape to an extent. Holliday season is still king. Cause halo would have no doubt brought in a slew of new subscribers. But it changes the dynamics. Gone are the days that Microsoft could have released a -Yoink- game. Cashed in $60. Since every 1st party game is available for gamepass the games all have to reach a certain quantity. I spend $10 for 1 month just to play halo. Halo sucks. I cancel my subscription and technically they sold me a copy of halo for $10.
With game pass they have to make sure the quality of thier 1st party games. Is something that keeps us coming back the following month with our $10. It’s really a win win. It ensures that we are getting great quality 1st party games. And Microsoft wins by keeping physical discs off the store shelves. The fewer physical discs there are. The fewer used games gamestop can sell at 0 profit to Microsoft. That is the plan in my opinion. So yeah halo gonna be pushed back till its quality is something microsoft can feel meets thier game pass strategy. And its gonna be MS decision on when and whether or not any of the editions get dropped.
Again in my opinion

My friend made the argument that the COD development machine is a very well oiled one so they can produce these games very quickly at a relatively high quality. It just puts emphasis on the fact that 343i are lagging behind their peers when it comes to developing games for such a huge franchise and they still have some growing and learning to do. Like I want to support them and want them to do well but there’s only so much we can take. But I think Halo 5’s campaign being as bad as it was has made us fans far less patient and has made it harder for us to support them.

End of the day Xbox is a business and they’re not likely to be fully transparent about problems developing a key title for the new console. I’m fine with the silence in development struggles. I’d rather them just get on with making the game at this point.

Call of duty has a 3 year development handled by 3 main teams. Each releasing a game a year. However there are various development stages during the game. The last stage is a crunch. The crunch is all hands on deck and they pull from a lot of studios for this. Including studios that are in developing other cod games but are not at a stage requiring all that personel. Activision is a seasoned 3rd party publisher. The first Infact as it was the first company to break away from atari and develop games for thier system. They are structured for cross platform and multi platform releases. What I mean by that is that the bulk of the various teams that work together are either under the same roof or nearbye.
Microsoft is a large company as well. But it is a console maker therefore its companies are making games for one console. Even during transitions from og to 360 to one they made games for one console or the other.
Thier companies are spread out. West and east America, europe, Canada.
So Microsoft studios not only do not have the experience of releasing multi platform games ( pc, one, series x). But thier studios are not in the optimal locations to effectively assist either.
I’m confused as to how CoDs annual gameplay reveal tradition makes you ‘hurt’ for Halo? Like. Why? How does that have anything to do with anything? Halo Infinite is still going to have its own multiplayer gameplay reveal never-the-less. You’ll even get to compare it to next years CoD. How exciting.
And in the same thread, everyone seems to agree with the guy who is also ‘hurt’ by saying CoD BO CW looking good (I just realised the zombies mode is going to be called Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War Zombies, or CODBOCWZ and that is ridiculously long), then literally specifying the most obvious public reason as to why Halo has been delayed:

Point is I simply don’t understand how COD looking good makes you sad that Halo doesn’t.
It’s like saying “I don’t like the look of this orange because that apple looks good.” before you’ve even taken a bite out of either.

It’s like going to a grocery store and seeing a clean looking orange and an orange covered in dirt.
Taking a bite would be experiencing the gameplay. You’re right, I haven’t played either so judging gameplay is out of the picture.
Flavor aside, in terms of visuals, anyone with eyes can tell that Halo Infinite needs to be polished if it’s going to be placed alongside Call of Duty in the same ‘next generation’ grocery store.

Yes and we’ve exactly established that that is why the game has been delayed until next year. Why does CoD remotely matter in the context of the delay?

It matters because Halo Infinite’s final release should be expected to have roughly the same graphical quality as Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, if not better, as Halo Infinite is releasing later on as a newer game.
If it does not meet those expectations, that’s lackluster.
Whether Halo Infinite can or cannot meet those expectations with the extra year of development time, is unknown. Hopefully it does. But what we do know is that the 2020 Halo Infinite demo fell far below those expectations.

I think we’ve just got to be patient. Believe me I’d love to hear more about Infinite but it’s gonna be a while til we get large info drops.
At the moment 343i are drip feeding little bits to us whilst we wait for more.
There are so many factors behind the scenes hat make up this delay and got us in the situation we’re in currently but it is what it is. Just gotta sit tight a little longer
Activision has operated this dev cycle for a decade. Its a conveyor belt of games.
343i on the other hand so far had very irregular cycles and each game is more different than the last one.
I wish Sony and MS would just delay the next gen until Feb 2021 at least, but it won’t happen. The virus most definitely pushed things back, yet companies are still sticking to pre-covid deadlines. Not a great move. I think 343 is doing the right thing here.
