My problem with Halo 5

So these are only some of the major problems I have with Halo 5 multiplayer. I will try to be as humble as possible but most of this is really just my opinion. So let’s get started. All the time in Halo 5. I join a lobby, get paired up with -Yoink- teammates that I have to carry, and no matter how hard we (or I) try, we get obliterated by the enemy team. This happens to me in EVERY Arena match to be honest. Every game I get in Arena, I get paired up with bad teammates while the enemy team is a bunch of sweats in an xbox live party going ham on us and my team just sits there and does nothing. Sometimes they even quit and leave me being the only one left against four enemies. I even had a teammate in doubles who kept jumping off the map making us lose! I am fed up with ALWAYS getting a bad team in Halo and having an unstoppable enemy. Whatever team balancing and matchmaking system Halo 5 uses, it seems to be rigged against me most of the time, and then, when I try to leave or quit because I have had enough of the enemy team and my team’s -Yoink-, the game wants to punish me for not staying! Remember in Halo when you could leave a game and not get penalized? I remember. That is literally the worst thing 343 has put into the game! Sometimes people have something in real life they need to do and they will have to leave, sometimes people are having a bad match, and sometimes people like me have their teammates leave me alone to face off against a full team, and I’m not willing to stay in that situation. Why is it that when you leave a few matches you get banned? I can understand if it is to punish players for leaving their teammates behind and abandoning them, but it is still not a very good feature. People have terrible matches and realize when they have had enough and are not always willing to take an L all the time, and that’s normal, that’s human nature. It isn’t ok to just quit out of nowhere, but at the same time someone may be going negative or just have a really bad team they can’t carry anymore. Then, all of the default arena maps are too small. There are no maps in Halo 5 with any vehicles on them or any space to move around freely whatsoever. All of the core maps have no flow, no control, and are not fluid enough to be in a Halo game. Then there are no classic maps or maps similar to classic ones in Arena at all. The only way you can play on classic maps is if you go into custom games and that’s it. All of these new maps are entirely too strange for me to even familiarize. All of these maps in Arena are so small they look like they are from a Call of Duty game, and that means that the amount of chaos is high and map control and flow is low. With these small maps, this is Advanced Warfare all over again. As an OG Halo fan, I am used to playing on big maps with a lot of open space and at least some vehicles. The maps in Halo 5 feel boring and repetitive because none of the default maps are big enough for vehicles, which in my opinion made the maps in previous Halo games fun, where they mixed things up a little with the huge vehicular battles, not to mention that the presence of vehicles gave meaning to power weapons and made variety in the weapons mandatory, plus, there is only a small number of maps in Arena and nearly all of them have the sniper rifle or a sniper weapon as a power weapon. With no variety in vehicular combat, no variety in the different weapons that spawn in the maps, and no variety in the weapons that spawn on EACH map with almost every map having the same power weapons cough (snipers) cough, this makes the maps feel boring and repetitive. Another problem with the maps is that they tell players where and when power weapons are going to spawn, which may be fair, but it eliminates the usage of skill and does the opposite of what past Halo games did; which was force players to memorize where power weapons spawn and make them memorize the maps in their head. With this new feature that tells everyone on the map where one or two particular weapons spawn, it takes out the skill and doesn’t require players to think, it basically holds their hands for them and tells them where the weapons are, making everyone go into a mad dash for it which helps to eliminate the map flow, since everyone is running over each other to get to one place on a small map so they get the weapons first. While I understand why 343 did this, it still doesn’t mean that it was a good idea. I believe that power weapon spawning should go back to it’s roots, when the players who had skill and memorized the spawn locations of the weapons were rewarded, and not everyone being told where the weapon was and when it would spawn. Then, Halo 5 is a little more competitive than any other Halo before, by this, I mean that every playlist in the game has a KDA ratio and stat tracker for it, allowing other players to review your stats and match themselves with you, everyone I play with is at my rank and skill level or higher, and EVERYONE I play against is an MLG beast pro. (but for some reason the teammates I get are nowhere near as good as these players). Arena has a KDA and stat tracker which is fine, Warzone has a win/lose ratio which is fine, but my problem is that even the social and customs playlists have KDA and stats, when social and customs are supposed to be more casual playlists where players just play for fun and don’t really care about KDA and stats that much, so why do these playlist for more casual play have KDA stats for them? Not to mention that everyone can look at your stats and you have no option (not that I know of) that allows you to make your stats private, I don’t want other people and the whole world to see my stats, not that my stats are really that bad, I have an average KDA, but I just don’t want others to see them and review them, I’m a private person and I like to keep my information to myself, and I do not see why there is no option to privatize your stats. (To be honest I am also a little insecure but that is just personal preference). The reason why I see KDA and stats as competitive is because my definition of “competitive” is much different from everyone else’s, where I see that if a playlist has kill/death and win/loss stats, that means it is a playlist for more competitive players who want to see and review their stats and see how they match up with other players, making me feel I may need to do good and even do better than other players most of the time. I am not saying I don’t want to use my brain when I play, I am saying I want to just play the game without having to worry about my stats dropping whenever I lose. I do not care about winning or losing, but I do care about having my stats be recorded and shared with other people who can see them at any time. I am a casual player who just wants to have fun, I don’t want to worry about how good I’m doing and how my stats compare with those of other players. As for Warzone, it is a little hard with how many enemies spawn each round, and how an entire squad of covenant and prometheans teleport behind you and say “Nothing personal kid”. My biggest problem with Warzone is how friendly fire for vehicle splatter is enabled, meaning that my teammates always run over me in with banshees, warthogs, ghosts, and wraiths, making me have to wait an entire round to respawn because players like to run over everyone just to troll you and make you lose your REQ weapons when you die.

What you’ve said here is your opinion alone, and we shall respect it.

But for future reference, do not write a wall of text as it is taxing on the eyes, in addition to taking a long time to read. Instead, try to plan out your thoughts prior to publishing, and split up your points with brief, but sufficient explanations.

> Remember in Halo when you could leave a game and not get penalized?

No, I don’t. You’ve always been penalized in some form or another for quitting. And that includes the precious Bungie games.

> All the time in Halo 5. I join a lobby, get paired up with -Yoink- teammates that I have to carry, and no matter how hard we (or I) try, we get obliterated by the enemy team. This happens to me in EVERY Arena match to be honest.

I just took a quick look at your ranked Arena matches (so not the Grifball ones) and honestly, I saw more games where you got carried vs you carrying so this is patently false.

As for the rest, well, you may want to split it up in to paragraphs because that would lead people to be more inclined to read your post. As it stands, it’s kind of a mess and jumbled together and it’s hard to figure out what’s going on.

CE on OG Xbox. You could end the game without penalty.

Because there is no online play for CE on OG Xbox.

I like that the maps are “Arena” maps without vehicles, I just am not a huge fan in the fact that they’re all basically square in design, and share the same concept in most cases… 2 base, 2 tower designs… or open/closed layouts.

It’s why I’m more of a fan of the asymmetric maps, even though Fathom is a fairly interesting 2 base, 2 tower layout…

I’m not saying that the maps are bad at all either, a handful aren’t great, but they just all share similar attributes and are all roughly the same size… they just lack some character in some aspects.

Rip, the joke was ruined.

Paragraphs would be nice…

Someone get a sledgehammer to break down that wall of text.

1) I agree that the quit bans could be revised, but they were in almost all of the Halos just not as strict.

2) Josh Menke is working on an update for the matching system so hopefully it works better.

3) Are you talking about ranked Arena maps with no vehicles? Why would they put vehicles on Arena maps and BTB has vehicles, btw.

4) Why does H5 need classic maps? There is a classic Pit map in Action Sack if you’re interested.

5)"All of these new maps are entirely too strange for me to even familiarize." I hope you’re not serious with that statement.

6)"As an OG Halo fan, I am used to playing on big maps with a lot of open space and at least some vehicles." As an OG Halo fan, I know there are a lot of good small maps with no vehicles in past Halos. Again, BTB does have vehicles.

7)"The maps in Halo 5 feel boring and repetitive because none of the default maps are big enough for vehicles, which in my opinion made the maps in previous Halo games fun, where they mixed things up a little with the huge vehicular battles" What are you even talking about? Are you referring to BTB or Arena maps? BTB does have a few big maps although a lot of them are medium sized and they do have vehicles.

8)"Another problem with the maps is that they tell players where and when power weapons are going to spawn, which may be fair, but it eliminates the usage of skill and does the opposite of what past Halo games did; which was force players to memorize where power weapons spawn and make them memorize the maps in their head." Not completely. It just tells you where the tier 3 weapons spawn like the sniper and rocket, but the shotgun and hydra for example are not shown. I don’t mind showing the power weapon spawn locations, but I don’t like that it gives an indication when someone picked it up.

9)"everyone I play with is at my rank and skill level or higher, and EVERYONE I play against is an MLG beast pro." Umm, didn’t you say earlier that everyone you get matched with sucks? So does that mean you’re saying you suck?

Responses where I quoted you are in bold. I think you need to be more specific about what you’re talking about regarding the maps. You kept saying all the maps are small and have no vehicles unlike in the past, but the majority of the maps in previous Halos didn’t have vehicles on them outside of BTB and a lot of them were small as well. Are you referring to ranked Arena maps or just BTB maps?

I will admit that I have not been playing for as long as many halo players but I personally quite like Halo 5. I do agree that the ban hammer for leaving is kinda harsh but I remember back in the days of halo 4 when people used to leave games as soon as they started to get xp. The halo 5 method really reduces this in my opinion.

I’m sorry, I could not read it all, I would break this up for sure.

When you said that you hate how 343 penalizes you for leaving early, halo 3, the first halo I played online, would take experience away from you for leaving a match. a time ban is nothing compared to that. Reach gave a time ban and gave you nothing from the match, I can’t remember what halo 4 did but my point is that leaving a match and getting punished for it is nothing new.

The maps are small… because it is arena you are playing in. most of the time only 8 people are on the map, 4 against you. Big team battle has good size maps with a few of them being forge remakes of previous halo maps. Along with Warzone if you are not a fan of the small maps.

Small number of maps in arena? 7 non forge maps were released after the launch of halo 5. I do not know what you mean by this statement

Remember when Halo 3 had their own banhammer that punished you for quitting? I remember.

inb4 china calls.

(they will call btw)My complaints with Halo lies more with it’s story, especially considered luka alreadey described the multiplayer front. In short:

-Strays away from the sci fi that Halo is, becoming more of a overly dramatic space opera. With avenger-esque super soldiers.
-Why am I playing as Locke 75% of the game?
-The overall story is incredibly muddied. There’s next to no character development.
-Literally tries to ignore just about EVERYTHING that was set up in Halo 4. Didact, Jul M’dama, the Janus Key (Escalations’s “closure” to these was pure asinine.)
-If the Guardians were so powerful, why were they never mentioned until now?
-Why is Cortana evil? Oh right. She’s actually a recollection of the strands she shed at the end of 4, so she’s not the Cortana that “died”.
-…buuut why is her fragments evil? There are parts where she quotes Didact word for word and it was clear she despised him in 4.
-Why am I playing as Locke 75% of the game?
-Needs more arbiter. More. MORE. MOOAR!
-They finally bring Blue team to the games…but…
-Why am I playing as Locke 75% of the game?
-I didnt care for the new revival mechanic. Most of the time my team would DERP and let me slowly die just to go into a loading screen to wait again. -Yoink!- Tanaka…
-the ads leading up to the game were more or a less a lie. Mostly lie.
-The Covies felt basic and the forerunners felt tedious. The real fun enemies to fight were few and far between.
-343i, bullet sponges are not a fun game mechnanic. Didact has a cool background but literally facing him again and again the time it taks to take him down each time feels like such a slog and was only fun the first couple times. If even that.

But most of all…
-Why am I playing as Locke 75% of the game?

Now that is the largest paragraph I have ever seen on waypoint

Oh, geeze, um, this thread. Let me list my top 10 problems with Halo 5

  1. The game caters solely to “pro” players instead of the entire fan base.

  2. The overly bright textures, I mean I’m not asking for ODST levels of dark but some shaders on player models and forge objects would be nice

  3. The lack of armor customization

  4. The finite weapon and vehicle cards

  5. RNG based armor unlocks with little to no progression/skill based unlocks for solo players

  6. Pretty lame and uninteresting Arena dev maps, where’s the soul? Where’s the passion? C’mon devs you can do better!

  7. Weapons occasionally fire blanks. Ok but why though?

  8. Bug fixes don’t feel like they take priority, leaving the game a huge glitchy mess

  9. Microtransaction. Normally I’d fill up an entire thread with this but leave it with a simple reason. Microtransactions allow the devs to be lazy when designing the game whilst finishing the games programming/features under the guise of “free DLC” which it really isn’t.

  10. The core gameplay is NOT Halo. Halo’s 4 and 5 are based off the mechanics of Reach, a spin off title, when they should be building off of Halo CE, 2, and 3, the mainstream series as 4 and 5 are in the mainstream series and not spin off titles.

These are my opinions based off my experiences with the game, make of them what you will.
