I hate that dr. Halsey has been turned Into this sniveling pariah. Karen travis just used this book to take pot shots at halsey and every other character just lets -Yoink- happen. Honestly karen travis is not a good author.
I’m pretty sure every Star Wars fan hates the Star Wars books she wrote too. Well, that’s the general vibe I get over on the Old Republic forums.
When it was announced she would be writing Halo books, a lot of users over there said they now felt sorry for the Halo Universe because she would be writing books about it.
Am I happy with the treatment Halsey is getting? No. However I understand why people would be upset with her actions. can you imagine if someone today was caught kidnapping children, replacing them with dieing replacements, putting them through harsh training, eliminating their emotions, and putting them through augmentation where almost half were killed or disabled all to fight Al Qaeda? Even if approved by the government they would still face alot of jail time. Pargonsky may not be against the Spartan Program but she certainly is against Halsey. She is taking this opportunity to take Halsey down.
As for the ODSTs and the others, they only know what they are being told. Has anyone ever told you never let yourself become isolated? Well that is exactly what happens here. Osman tells them what she knows but she has a bias. What else should they think? they have no other source of information and no nothing about how much the Spartans love it. They don’t know what we know

i honestly just hope the next book isnt written by karen travis. I now welcome Nylund back into the fold. hell Dietz was a better author than KAren Travis
I believe Naomi was indeed hurt by the harsh treatment of Halsey, but I also sense she wants to fit in so she just keeps her mouth shut.
I love the books but if the next one is more of KAren Travis pushing her own agenda then it will end up like the Republic Commando books. terrible. i would not purchase the next one.

I agree with the OP about Halsey. She gets way too much torment about her actions and it is ever brought up how much the Spartans save humanity. 75 families may have been ruined, but 75 million families survived beccause of it.
Not for me, from a fan perspective, I want her Spartans and everyone to help her, from a universe perspective, I’m ok with it. Splice your perspectives… Don’t let your fan overcome your sense of reality.

Pretty much this. As much as we may love Halsey and the Spartans, the truth of the matter is that she really did do a lot of terrible things that a lot of people even today would not be happy with. Karen Traviss writes books that develop believable characters in a military setting, which is what she did with Glasslands. All of the reactions and attitudes in the book are very believable, whether you agree with them or not.
And for those that don’t know, the Republic Commando books were great. The reason most Star Wars fans hated them was because of their anti-Force user vibe that Karen Traviss felt strongly about as a Star Wars fan and her adpation/creation of the Mandalorians. A lot of arguments developed from those books online and now Traviss is very much disliked as a Star Wars writer. This I think is also part of the reason she no longer gets further involved with the universes she writes in. Really not a big deal.
I would be happy if she didn’t get involved in this universe anymore. And yes i agree that the things that she did were terrible but this book is overly hostile towards Halsey. i mean they Barely mention the fact that they stopped innies and Eveery other characterization of halsey isnt this sniveling of a character.
Traviss also made me hate Mendez. I mean he did basically the same thing but Does he get any flak for it. -Yoink- no.
I don’t know about the author of the book, but I like how it’s turning out for Arbiter. Who fought alongside/supported Arbiter at Installation 05 control room and in Halo 3? Guilty Spark, Johnson, Keyes, Master Chief, Rtas Vadum, Lord Hood.
3 of them are dead. 1 is missing. Arby’s almost alone, with only Rtas Vadum, Lord Hood, and some Elites and marines on good terms with him.
Arby gets assassinated or he loses his pals, UNSC Covie Separatist alliance may be shattered.

I cant believe that people keep forgetting that the atrocities of the spartan programme were committed not to fight the covenant, but merely to mediate an internecine political dispute in the UNSCs favour. Does that give it a bit more perspective?
Halsey is lucky the covenant turned up in a way, otherwise she might not have any redeeming features at all. She is just an over-curious scientist, and a damn unethical one at that.
Thats not to say she doesnt have any sort of conscience, the book tries to impress upon the reader that she does and its been awakening.
I think people would get a better overall picture is they read the journal too. Its basically a hundred pages of the halsey show.

-Yoink-. The rebels nuked a colony, hijacked ships and killed off the crews and bombed public places to simply kill a few soldiers. That is no longer a political dispute but terrorism and conventional methods had all but failed.

And He’s given a heroes death because he didn’t give a -Yoink- about the Spartan III’s and sent them to their deaths.
Halsey is -Yoink!- cause she cared about the Spartan II’s and did her best to make sure as many possible survived.
Also, Fatal, you must be forgetting the simple fact that the rebels WERE NUKING ENTIRE COLONIES.
Without the Spartan project, Humanity would’ve been dragged into a brutal civil war with losses on par with the human-Covenant war.

It’s not like the S-IIIs were asked if they wanted to augmented…Merely if they wanted to fight against the Covenant, which could have been done through normal military functions. Augmentation is in ever Spartan program, Halsey’s was the riskiest because it was the first, it has obviously since been refined as seen in S-IIIs and soon to be S-IVs.
Mendez is worse then Halsey in scope of what was done. He willing planned and some pursued physical and sometime inadvertently emotional mental harm on at least thousands of children.
In fact, Halsey isn’t even tried for her action in the Spartan program but that is the secondary motive to Paragnosky’s targeting of her because the charges of diverting resources to abide the enemy is highly trumped up as there’s no real way Marines could have helped survive Onyx sentinels and find the Forerunner tech used in Infinity. Heck, that’s my only real problem is that her unofficial charges are related to a program that both her and Mendez should be imprisoned for but no due diligence is shown.
