No, Halo Infinite probably doesn’t need a battle royale to be a great game or to make money. If those are the only goals, it could probably launch today and be fine. With that said, as a 35 year-old who has loved Halo since the day CE released in 2001, I want Infinite to be the biggest game in the world. I care so deeply about this franchise and I want Infinite to be more than just another great game. In order for that to happen, yes, it will need to have a battle royale. Obviously it won’t be at launch, and it doesn’t have to be, but I’m pleading to 343 to at least tease it, and eventually make it a reality.
I’m an older gamer, but I have enough younger cousins and nephews in my life to understand what keeps today’s gamers invested in games. Even a great arena shooter will find it very difficult maintain interest for many years, especially a franchise that is largely bound by cannon for its cosmetics. The long-term success of Infinite will depend on many factors, but perhaps chief among them is, “is it worthwhile and fun to ‘grind’ the game and invest my time into.” I have serious concerns that it won’t be without a battle royale.
How long will it be before the cosmetic-only items we grind the battle pass for become stale? I love customizing my spartan as much as anyone, but cosmetics alone simply won’t keep many people invested for long. People grind other games to unlock meta-changing weapons, outrageous operators, weapon attachments, etc. None of this is possible in Halo multiplayer. Sure, people will grind Infinite to unlock a weapon skin, or a helmet, but cosmetic-only items like these will eventually run stale. It’s a great game, but I couldn’t help but notice pros & streamers alike growing bored after just 3 days of the tech preview. Granted, it was only a preview, but that’s still troublesome. A battle royale allows for introducing items that will require players to grind the game in order to keep up with the current meta, and that’s a meta that 343 can change at will to keep the game fresh. Imagine a season where you can unlock the CE magnum or a playable Elite to use in the Infinite battle royale, and the only way to get them is to grind the battle pass. The possibilities are endless.
I understand the people who don’t enjoy battle royale games, but I don’t understand the people who are against Infinite having one. If you don’t like it, simply don’t play it. Many have said this before, but it bears repeating: The Halo universe is almost too perfectly suited for a battle royale not to have one. 20 years of weapons, lore, characters, etc.
Please 343.
