My Only Gripe With REQ System

Let me start by saying I’m really excited for Halo 5. I think a lot of the things they are doing is a great evolution for the series. I loved the beta and cant wait for 10/27.

That being said, my one gripe (and its a small one) with the REQ system, is the randomness that comes in regards to armor unlocks.

Halo 3 was awesome in this regard. To me it made getting the achievements worth it. I still try for some but I got 1000/1000 when it was just the original game, and I think I’m only missing 2 atm. But I did that because getting certain achievements meant unlocking armor. Get em all and you received the GLORIOUS Katana.

Halo Reach was also a step back for me. The shop was cool, and let me pick out what I really wanted, and unlocking more the higher your level was cool. But there was no achievement or accomplishment in unlocking them. It was just because I played a lot that I got this armor. I could’ve came in last every game and still be able to buy and unlock armor.

Halo 4 was, again, alright. The higher the multiplayer lever, the more armor you got. Which was nice. But what they did do right, IMO, is tie armor to the commendations. It gave you a purpose. I caused me to change the way I played. Instead of going in guns a blazing, I used my active came and tried sneaking to get those Assassinations for the Venerator (sp?) armor. Stuff like that was cool. Make it feel like you earned that armor. Rather then it being random or you just played a lot.

Now with the REQ packs, I feel like, in this regard, were taking two steps back. I can get the most Rare/mythical/legendary/UBER helmet or armor by chance on my first REQ pack. (Now here’s where you can correct me. Does the amount of content available increase the higher your Spartan rank?) And I know that the game isn’t out so we don’t know the whole deal about it, but as of now, it seems ALL armor/visor/stance/assassination/weapon skins are unlocked at random.

What do you guys think?

They had said there will be several items unavailable in REQ. So I’m sure there will be a few tied to achievements, spartan ranks, commendations, and so on. I understand your plight, but I’m H5 seems to be bringing a little from each game in regards to unlocks. “The best of both worlds,” as it were.

This. Take Helioskrill for example, that was acquired through an achievement (wven
if it was for MCC). I think it will be a good mix of both.

I personally like the idea being able to potentially unlock armors in any order. Seems more fun that way. That’s the only thing really appealing of the Halo 4 specialization system that made up the last chunk of ranks in Halo 4. The idea that there was no preset order of which armors I was unlocking seems better to me for some reason.

Ah dang. I forgot about that armor. Im no where near completing MCC on legendary.

I have absolutely no issue with this. It keeps players that play for 100% unlocks wanting to keep playing. I love the idea of the Halo: Reach shop system as well and I feel that it would be an easy implementation with the REQ system, but I doubt we will see it. However, there is also the unlocks via achievements and whatnot as well.
