My New Fix since Halo fall of Reach.

Plain and simply the best military theme Sci-Fi series to challenge halos lackluster novel of bland stories and of which needs more love maybe 343i to take a read(or listen).

I think novels based on games end up somewhat bland for a number of reasons:

  • They aren’t the main story. Because the main ‘media’ of the franchise is a game, the main plot is expected to be there, while a book is generally side material. People get upset if too much information is in the book and not the game - They are produced more as a business than a creative expression. Whereas novel series might be someone’s big creative idea, a game fanchise’s novels need to be produced to continue the franchise. They’re also contracted out to authors rather than being the creation of the well, creator. - Attempts to make it ‘feel like the game’ can often end up making a narrative feel cheaper. The Fall of Reach worked pretty well because the author had so much to play with. So little of the franchise was nailed down by that point that he could do a lot with it. Similarly the Forerunner saga had alot of room to do as it pleased.

Meanwhile other books are more tied down .

Thanks for the reading tip!

I’ll take this opportunity to plug my own current favorite sci-fi book series: The Expanse. There’s an Amazon Prime show based on it right now if anyone wants to get a quick teaser before reading, but wow the books are incredible. If you like Game of Thrones, I’ll describe it simply as Game of Thrones in space. In fact, one of the two authors (the series is written under a pen name) helped write GoT with George R.R. Martin.

If you didn’t like GoT, I’ll describe it as a very realistic sci-fi series that focuses on what human expansion into the solar system would look like. The physics, orbital mechanics, ship functionality and design, and the like are what an aerospace engineer would expect in a few hundred years. From what I’ve read, the books have received praise from scientists for being fairly spot on with the science.

All valid points, but I don’t see why this is an issue. There isn’t really a sole creator of Halo (or other big franchises for that matter, it’s usually a huge collaboration). Jason Jones, Marcus Lehto, and Marty O’Donnell aren’t writers. They probably wouldn’t even want to write a Halo novel. Joe Staten has written 2 Halo novels and even then his entries aren’t considered the most well received. Greg Bear and Eric Nyland has no hand in creating Halo and have contributed some of the best content to the universe.

In all im really enjoyed the military style future that is painted here. The theme of human vs human didnt punch on side or the other but made you feel pity. Then there are the lankies all i can say is wow truly awesome and terrified of these things.

I mean…if you guys want a good read from a good game…read the Dead Space books. Without a doubt, some of the better reads I have done (in between reading Halo books).
