My In Depth Thoughts on Halo 5

For the past 3 and a 1/2 I’ve seen lots and lots of criticism and overall negativity thrown Halo 5’s way. I haven’t really talked about my thoughts on the game much outside of my personal friend group and was wondering what other people’s thoughts on everything the game had to offer was. This post is gonna be a tad long but I want to say everything that I want to about the game to so nothing is unclear.

Campaign
I really enjoyed it for the most part and thought that the level design was some of the series’ best. Although I wish that less time was spent on Meridian but that might just be me. Obviously I would’ve loved to play as Chief more than we got to but I understand that they wanted to establish new characters. However, I think that they did a pretty poor job in trying to make us like Locke, Tanaka, and less so Vale. We know that Locke is from Oni and tried to kill Arbiter but besides that little bit of backstory (and nightfall too I guess) that’s all we new about him. It would have worked had he contained any sort of personality but he just feels like a mostly emotionless husk. Tanaka is also pretty bland in my opinion and it seemed like 343 cared the least about her out of the four in Osiris. She has a small character moment in the story but I don’t feel like any one really cared about it. The only other time she gets to shine is when she talks about her upbringing on what I believe is an outer colony planet. Vale is easily is the most fleshed out new character in Osiris but could’ve used a bit more personality as well besides “speaks Sangheli”. Although I think that she was heavily benefitted by getting to be on Sangehelios. I also don’t really feel the need to talk about Buck much since he was great in this game. He was an already established fan favorite character who came back and did what he does best. As a side note, I like how they explored the thought of how he feels and moves with being much older than the rest of his team. As for Blue Team I feel like they have similar issues but amplified. To get it out of the way, Master Chief was great for the short time he was in this game. You could see the emotion on his helmet if that makes sense. The rest of Blue Team feel very one dimensional in this game. I haven’t read any of the books and I know that they are fleshed out so much there but for people who only play the games and nothing else have no reason to care who Kelly, Fred, and Linda are. It especially doesn’t help that they get next to no screen time to show their personalities. There are a few moments where you can see that they know each other very well but these moments only happen a hand full of times throughout the campaign. I think 343 bit off a bit more than they could chew in introducing 6 new main characters to the games and have them all have enough screen time and fleshed out personalities. The plot was alright in my opinion, I’m not as negative as lots of others are but I do agree that it’s pretty weak. I think Halo 5’s Campaign would’ve been looked at slightly better had the marketing for the game been very misleading. I understand a little why the marketing was the way it was, since they didn’t want people to know that Cortana was in the game. Halo games usually feel a lot more ‘epic’ and what not but this kind of felt like a wild goose chase and then it was over. I think that the ending however was pretty good all things considered. I know that people don’t want to buy Cortana as a villain but I think that if done right (or if it’s not her at all) can lead to very good character moments especially between her and chief. I’m very excited to see where infinite goes with this and hope that it doesn’t drop it entirely. I don’t know where in here to mention this but why did they have to sum up Spartan Ops in one mission? I feel liked they could’ve handled that in a much better way than they did. I think that the campaign would’ve benefitted from some kind of codex or terminals instead of the data pads that we got. The squad mechanics are pretty cool so that you never feel like you’re playing alone but they can be pretty dumb most of the time which is unfortunate but imo it can make for some pretty funny moments. The difficulty felt fair, not too easy or hard. Comparing it to all of the other Halos on Legendary I’d say that it’s somewhere in the middle.

REQ System

Customization in Halo is what made me fall in love with the series, so obviously I was somewhat bothered when I learned that everything was unlocked through random chance. It doesn’t bother me as it does most but I still wish you could have earned at least armor through either levelling up or achievements or something. My idea for a better REQ system would’ve been that you could either buy the stuff you want individually or buy packs where the outcome is random but you’ll get a better deal. Also maybe you have to start off only buying Common stuff and as you level up you will unlock the ability to buy Uncommon, then Rare stuff and so on. It’s not perfect and it’d have been better if they took the REQ system out entirely but I don’t have a huge problem with it. I also wasn’t bothered much by the limited armor customization (Helmet, Body, Visor). Again while I would’ve liked more like what Reach or 4 gave us it didn’t really bother me. Now this is a very niche thing to complain about but why did the game not have a proper Teal or Navy Blue? There were some dark blues but they were too vibrant, and the closest thing to Teal was Aqua but didn’t feel dark enough. I know that not a lot of people even care about that but it just irks me a bit. I also noticed how 343 made a bunch of new not very appealing armor sets to pad out the REQ system. While I welcome new armor sets I don’t like how half -Yoinked!- some seem. I don’t know how many unique sets are in 5 but I feel like in Infinite they should take around half of the better looking sets maybe more or less and add new ones that take inspiration from the not so great ones in 5 but refine them and make them feel more likeable.

I ran out of characters so I will reply to this with the other part of my thoughts.

Multiplayer/Sandbox
I absolutely LOVE the multiplayer in 5, everything feels so good and fun. I think that SAs replacing AAs was a very good idea. I also think that every Spartan Ability feels super fun and useful. I honestly don’t understand why people want Sprint removed from the game/future games. I feel like it overall enhances the gameplay rather than hurts it. Going back and playing the older Halo games feels weird without sprint and kind of like an 'this game was before they added this good feature". I know that this part of my post will be VERY divisive but that’s okay. In Infinite I think that the gameplay needs the some of the least work done on it. Although I don’t like how social/casual play was put on the sidelines so competitive could be the forefront. With that said, I do like how balanced and fair H5’s gameplay feels I wish they would’ve gave more attention to the social aspect of the game. This flaw is especially apparent when you see that all of the BTB maps were made by the community in Forge. I’m pretty split on Warzone, it’s a fun game mode and interesting idea but could be better if they replaced the REQ system aspect of the game mode. Although the REQ system in this does work pretty well all things considered. I haven’t mentioned this yet but I love the new and overhauled weapons. the Boltshot feels balanced, the Suppressor and Storm Rifle feel unique, The Binary and Incineration Cannon aren’t OP anymore, The Sentinel Beam isn’t bad, etc. Not to mention that the addition of soldier and the change to knights feel super good too. My only issue is that the Magnum feels slightly too good compared to the other precision weapons but that may just be me.

Forge
The way they overhauled this was so great, I have almost no complaints. The controls can be a little jarring at first but imo better than the older games once you get used to it. I love that they added grouping objects it’s super useful. The only issues I do have is that as far as i know you still can’t play forge in FFA/ be your own colors which I think would be an easy addition. My other complain is also a small one in that whenever I place some objects and look at them later, it always that’s that they’re coordinates and rotation are ever so slightly off from when I placed them. Also this isn’t a knock on 5 but I think AI in Forge would be huge for Infinite. Prefabs are cool too but I don’t use them much.

Custom Games
Not much can be said besides that I play Custom Games with my friends a lot and the addition of Machinima Mode and Observer Mode are some of my favorite new features in Halo games. I just wish that you could switch between observer and player during a match if you wanted to. I don’t use the custom browser at all but I’m glad it’s there.

Theater
Why is the playback so ‘off’? Whenever someone shoots the reticle is never lined up with the enemy even though in the actual game it was.

Overall/Closing Thoughts
I love this game, I still find myself getting an itch every now and then to play this game. I don’t understand all of the negativity towards multiplayer but do for campaign to some extent. Halo 5 is one of my favorite halo games as of right now. The only other thing I’d have to complain about is that I sometimes get kicked from matchmaking games for no reason although this is few and far between. I’m curious to hear what your other opinions are on this game and how you feel about what I just said. I hope this doesn’t cause any kind of flame war I simply wanted to share my thoughts on the game and hear other’s too.

People say this about Locke, but doesn’t pre-Halo 4 Chief also kind of seem that way?

Bear in mind the characters will sometimes talk about their past and stuff, if you stand around and lollygag. So someone who breezes through Halo 5’s campaign might miss quite a bit of character development. That said, I do agree it seems like most of the newly introduced characters weren’t fleshed out very much especially for people who don’t read Halo books.

Same here but that’s mostly because I like to wear full armor sets to begin with. I didn’t mix and match armor pieces very often in other Halo games, but I can see why Halo 5’s customization would be disappointing for people who did.

I agree, I miss Halo 4’s nice teal color. But at least Halo 5 has a proper purple. Halo Reach’s “violet” was way too blue. But what annoys me much more than that is the white paint that can’t be changed on so many armor sets.

Emphatically agree with this. Some of the new helmets are so ugly, I get annoyed just having to look at them. It also bothers me that sometimes their visors don’t exactly match up with where the Spartan’s eyes would be, compared to other helmets. Hoping for quality over quantity in Halo Infinite.

Halo 5’s multiplayer guy, Josh/Zaedynfel, has acknowledged BTB in Halo 5 “has always been a more competitive playlist”. He goes on to say: “You may ask, “Why is BTB so competitive in H5 when it was so casual in H4?” That’s a tricky question. Probably a combination of Warzone, H5 Arena being more competitive-focused to begin with, and most of the non-tryhards being in Super Fiesta even before we had BTSF.”

So yeah, seems like Warzone is a big reason why they made the rest of Halo 5’s multiplayer so competitive-focused, besides Super Fiesta. I’m not too happy with that, personally.

YES

While I do agree with you, I feel that Chief was helped by Cortana being with him for most of 1-3. I think the choice to make Chief an actual character in 4 was almost necessary. They can still make Locke or Osiris interesting but part of me feels like Osiris will be mostly absent from Infinite. Also I do want to point out that Halo 5 did make some good new characters in The Warden Eternal and Exuberant Witness.

Thank you for replying, I had a great time reading this. I don’t have much to say about your other points besides that I agree with pretty much all of them.

The problem with that is that if this is really Cortana, then her character from Halo 4 is still being thrown away by nearly every possible conclusion that could come from this.

If it’s not Cortana, why use her likeness in the first place instead of the Didact who was meant to be the main antagonist and does the exact same thing anyway?

And it’s not like Chief is emotionally invested this time. He was never coerced or faltered to Cortana’s plan. He wanted a direct answer, he (eventually) got one, and now Cortana’s the enemy.

Because at the end of the day many people want things to be fun while balanced. Even people who do like the Spartan abilities aren’t fans of Spartan Charge.

In the case of Sprint, I mean it’s not like you explained how it enhances the gameplay, so all someone could really say is they feel it doesn’t enhance gameplay. You’ve already labelled it as “good” before it ever got to Halo.

There’s two really long posts on Waypoint about that.

Yeah, I think Chief and Locke both do the “stoic efficient supersoldier” thing about equally well, just hoping Locke gets a bit more character development. Not sure how much of Osiris we’ll see in Infinite but hopefully at least Buck makes an appearance.
