First off: don’t get rid of sprint. That would be a massive mistake. Games today are fast paced, and simply pulling spring for the sake of “nostalgia” would alienate new players, and those who have become fans around or after the Reach era.
At the same time, many people don’t like these new “fast-paced” games. It can tend to make certain gametypes too fast and chaotic.
Instead, sprint can simultaneously be both used and not used to appease all players.
Campaign, by default, should have sprint. The obvious solution is to simply add an option in the setting menu to disable it. Boom. Problem solved.
As for multiplayer, it’s not as simple of a solution. My idea is that all social gametypes should have sprint. Social slayer, CTF, BTB, etc. should include sprint, as they are “social”, and are primarily played just to have fun. Competitive gametypes on the other hand should have sprint disabled, as the goal is more aimed at killing, completing objectives, and ultimately winning; therefore prioritizing accuracy and goals over “running around” would be ideal, while more social games would be more free-for-all.
Just to clear up something. Having sprint doesn’t necessarily mean the game is fast paced. It’s entirely an illusion, because the maps are usually made with that mechanic in mind. Also it’s not all about how fast your moving, but the map design, sandbox, etc. A game is more dependent on this than actual moving speed when it comes to being labeled “fast paced.”
I don’t see the point of having options to turn on and off Sprinting, because movement speed can just be bumped up to match sprint speed, thus making sprinting useless. Regardless of what 343 decides to pick, if they add options to disable in Campaign, they had better make disabled sprinting equal to sprint speed or vice versa. If you want to toss into Social, ok, but I really think 343 would be better off not making this more complicated than it is. Even in social, you want to have fun, but enjoy the same experience as more seasoned playlists. Is running really going change that, when all you’re doing is activating an animation that boosts you to what would be movement speed in a ranked playlist
They shouldn’t leave gray areas or else there will be even more reason for people to debate about this topic against themselves.
The devs are basically forced to make maps longer in certain areas to make sure you can’t run from one end of the map to the other in 2 seconds. Full sprint with sprint is equal to the normal running in older Halo games without sprint.
Yeah, maps are designed to suit the movement mechanics. Simply toggling them off or on would ruin/change map flow and accessibility. Turning them off, but then increasing jump height (to accommodate for disabled mantling) or increasing movement speed (to accommodate disabled sprint) would create their own issues.
why would 343i want to copy all other fps games in the market, if they’re all fast paced (dont think its because of sprint in the most part) wouldnt it be good to have your own identity which players can instantly recognize?
the amounts of ways that the map and gameplay developers have to break their backs to accommodate these special features are insane, the maps need to be built around the abilities NOT around the gameplay and to maximize enjoyment so having an option to have these abilities on or off while having the same map is impossible it just wouldn’t work if the map is meant to be used with abilities but you chose to discard them.
the division between social and ranked is also something that wouldn’t work if implemented as you described. the maps would not be balanced in one of the two or in many cases both if they try to accommodate both sides.
how can you fix this?
simple remove sprint, pound, jetpacks, etc as we now know them, instead place these abilities like the old halos used to do through in-game power-ups which you can grab inside the match or campaign, with this the developers can create a map where they don’t have to be constantly afraid of a player leaving the map but they can have the ability to create one or two maps that would work great with these abilities inside it.
First of all, there’s already a sprint thread. Secondly, you completely miss the point of what sprint does to Halo. It has nothing to do with ‘nostalgia’ or ‘being fast’. Sprint is inheretly flawed. The only way to appease a Halo fan is by completely removing it. Those who want it can play CoD or something.
