When I set down to think about how a ranking system can satisfy everyone I came to the realization that it is not possible to have one system accommodate two very different types of players.
We have two different types of players:

Social-- “I don’t care about rank I just want to unlock all the game has to offer and have fun in the process.”

Competitive-- “I want to show the world I am the best.”
So how can we possibly have a system fit both types? We cant. It isn’t possible to have one system meet the needs of both groups.
What is the solution?
My opinion is that we have two different match making lists. 1 is social and it uses a credit system like Reach and players can level up and unlock the various things in the game, and we have another play list that is competitive and has a ranking system much like it was in Halo 3.
Why not appeal to everyone in one game? I see no down side, if you want to be more social and not rely on skill to level up then you can play social and just grind out the games to accumulate points and level up.
I only hope that Halo 4 can appeal to everyone equally.
